Barrans, John –
John Barrans, son of Thomas and Sarah Barrans,
was born near Neponset, Illinois, February 23, 1861, and died at his home near
Lenox, Iowa, September 12, 1946, after a lingering illness at the age of 85 years, 6 months and 19
days.
At the
age of 13 he moved with his parents to a farm near Creston, Iowa, where they
lived a year before moving to a farm one and one half miles south of
Lenox. He has lived in Platte township for 71 years and 53 years of that time on the farm
where he passed away.
He was
married April 15, 1896 to Eva May Shaw. To this union was born two children, Fred Barrans and Edith Notz, both of Lenox. He has been a member of the Presbyterian church for 52 years, having joined October 20th,
1894. He was a kind and loving husband
and father and a good friend and neighbor.
He is
survived by his wife, one son, a daughter, son-in-law and one grandchild. One brother, Joseph D. of
Clearfield, Iowa and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral
services were held at the United Presbyterian church Saturday afternoon, September
14th at 2:30 with the Rev. Earl Moneymaker in charge. Burial in the Lenox
cemetery.

Basler, Amelia Augusta Wurster –
Amelia
Augusta Basler, the daughter of Katherine and
Christopher Wurster, was born near Lenox, Iowa, August
28, 1882 and departed the life in the Creston Greater Community Hospital
October 3, 1946, at the age of 64 years, 1 month and 6 days. She attended the Lenox school and was graduated on May 10, 1903, after which she spent several years teaching
school.
On
March 15, 1906 she was united in marriage to Fred Basler of Finksburg, Maryland. The ceremony was
performed by the Rev. R. L. Barackman in Bedford,
Iowa.
On
February 10, 1901 she united with the Presbyterian church of Lenox, on her
profession of faith and all thru her life that faith was her comfort and
strength. In spite of her failing health
she was always cheerful and willing to lend a helping hand to those who needed
help. She was a good neighbor, a kind
and loving wife and mother. She is survived
by her husband and 3 children: Paul of Owensville, Ind., Letha Wurster and Freda Davis of Lenox and a foster son, Robert,
of the home. Also surviving are 10
grandchildren: Bonnie and Patricia Basler, Gerald
, James and Gloria Jeanne Wurster and Shirley, Donald, Dean, Gary and Dale Davis; and
by three sisters, Katherine Eberle, Elizabeth Haering and Lena Stamate, all of
Lenox, and by three brothers, George of Roundup, Montana, Fred and John C. of
Lenox. One brother, Harry, preceded her
in death.
Funeral
services were held from the Arnold Funeral Home Saturday afternoon, October 5th at 2 o’clock in charge of the Rev. Earl Moneymaker. Interment in the Lenox
cemetery.

Butler,
John C. -
John
C. Butler, son of Thomas and Rachel Bell Butler, was born near Batavia, in
Jefferson county, Iowa on May 30, 1858, and departed
this life July 26, 1946 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Howard Jones, at
Oskaloosa, Iowa, at the age of 88 years, 1 month and 26 days. A well known retired farmer, he had been a
resident of the Lenox vicinity for many years. His home was for many years the farm near the tree which connect the four counties, Taylor, Ringgold, Adams and
Union. When a small
boy, he moved with his parents to a farm in Union county. On February 11, 1879, he was united in
marriage to Miss Anna K. Agler, and to this union were born 11 children, 5 sons and 6 daughters, Clarence,
Edith, Charles, Mabel, Ollie, Harry, Earl, Clara, Carrie, Nellie and a son who
died in infancy. His wife, Anna, passed
away on July 12, 1898. On December 18,
1902, he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Andrews. Two children were born to this union, Mary
Jane and Howard. His wife, Margaret,
preceded him in death on January 10, 1920. On February 16, 1921, he was married to Mrs. Laura DeHaven,
who passed away May 12, 1936. He was
converted and joined the Methodist church when a young man, later transferring
his membership to the Presbyterian church to which he kept his membership the
remainder of his life. He is survived by
9 children, 3 sons, Clarence, Charles and Harry, and 8 daughters, Mrs. Edith
Hewitt, Mrs. Mabel Wilson, Mrs. Ollie Hughes, Mrs. Carrie Dahlberg, Mrs. Nellie
Peterson, all of Lenox and Mrs. Mary Jane Jones of Oskaloosa. Also 2 brothers, Walter of Creston and
William of Lenox, and 1 sister, Miss Lizzie Butler of Lenox, 24 grandchildren
and 25 great grandchildren besides a host of other relatives and friends. Three sons preceded him in death, Earl,
Howard, who died in 1926 and an infant son and, a
daughter, Clara. Also
one brother, Edward, and 3 sisters, Mrs. Ann Jane Hewitt, Mrs. Mary Robison and
Miss Rachel Butler. A grandson,
Lt. Kenneth W. Butler gave his life for his country during World War II.
Funeral
services were held on Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock, July 28, at the Barber
Funeral Home in Lenox, conducted by the Rev. Earl Moneymaker of the United
Presbyterian church. He was laid to rest
in the Morgan cemetery near Kent. Pall bearers
were six of his grandsons, Ray Hewitt, Paul Butler, Randall Wilson, Wendell
Wilson, Eldon Jones and Charles Peterson.

Caven, Lula Van Houten –
Lula,
daughter of Dave and Esther Van Houten was born in
Adams County, Iowa, June 27, 1875 and passed away after a brief illness, at her
home south of Lenox on September 20, 1946 at the age of 71 years, 2 months and
29 days. She was united in marriage to
Alfred E. Caven at Prescott on March 17, 1893. To this union two
sons, Arthur and Verne were born.
On May
20, 1894 she united with the Mount Pleasant Methodist church and has been
active member of the Methodist church since then. She was the first president of the Women’s
Society of Christian Service at the Lenox Methodist church. She is survived by her husband, her two sons,
Arthur of Conway and Verne E. of Lenox, two granddaughter, one great
granddaughter and her other many relatives and friends.
The
funeral was held from the Methodist church at 1:30 Saturday September 28. Mrs. Rollie Bender
and Mrs. Will Madden sang “Abide by Me” and “Rock of Ages”; they were accompanied
by Mrs. A.H. Peacock.

Chitty,
Frank Andrew –
Frank
Andrew Chitty, son of Peter and Mary Chitty was born in Mahaska county [Iowa] January 11, 1870 and passed away on Friday
October 4th, 1946, age 75 years, 8 months and 23 days.
During
his childhood the family moved to Taylor county, Iowa locating on a farm near
Gravity. It was there he grew to manhood
and there when as a young man he united with First Day Adventist with his
parents. He was married to Lottie Rascher on February 19, 1899 at Gravity. To them was born one child, a son Ray
Kenneth, on September 13, 1905. He
passed away when 5 years old. Frank was
the last of the family. A sister Elnora
passed away at Oskaloosa. The sons
Joseph John, William and Frank have all passed away during the last 6 years.
There
is no time we could set for parting. We
who remain are never ready for such pain. Our prayers will always be “Dear Lord not yet, another day with us, let
our beloved stay. We must believe when falls the blow.” That
wisely God hath willed it so is.

Connor, David M. –
David
M. Connor, 83, died Sunday evening September 1 [1946], at the home of his
son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Brown of Savannah, Georgia. Funeral rites were on Wednesday at Savannah
and burial was there also. He was a
resident of Lenox for many years, of Creston a few years and was cashier in
Kansas City, Missouri for many years until his retirement. Survivors besides his daughter are one sister,
Mrs. Roy Nelson, and one brothers, Frank, both of Lenox.

Consolver, Lee Lewellan –
Lee Lewellan Consolver, son of Martin Consolver, was born May 6, 1903 and died October 7,
1946, age 43 years, 5 months and 1 day, in the Cedar Rapids hospital.
He
leaves to mourn his going his wife and son Richard of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, his
father, a son John and daughter Mary of Des Moines. Two daughters, Virginia and
Maxine of Ames, two grandsons, sisters and brothers besides a host of relatives
and friends.

Gordon,
Edward Daniel –
Edward Daniel Gordon was born in Marion County,
Iowa, May 17, 1872, and passed away at his home in Lenox, Iowa October 17, 1946
at the age of 74 years, 5 months and 10 days. He was the son of John and Martha Gordon and the youngest of the family
of nine children. Five sisters and two
brothers have preceded him in death. One brothers, Charles Gordon, resides in Los Angeles,
California.
At the age of nine years he came with his parents to
a farm home one and one half miles northwest of Lenox, and has lived
continuously on the place until he and his wife moved to Lenox seven years ago
this December.
He was united in marriage to Susie Long on November
22, 1894. They had lived forty-seven
years in the farm home. To them were born
two sons, Leigh and Hugh.
Mr. Gordon attended the public school in Lenox, and
attended business college in College Springs,
Iowa. He united with the Lenox
Presbyterian church on March 27, 1887 on the profession of his faith and has
been a member of this faith for almost sixty years. He and Mrs. Gordon celebrated their fiftieth wedding
anniversary in 1944.

Mrs. E.
V. Graham, mother of Mrs. A. Raymond Eckels of
Woodbury Heights, New Jersey, passed away Monday at her home at Shueyville, Iowa. Mrs. Graham would have been 100 years old her next birthday. Warren E. Eckels left
Wednesday evening to attend the funeral to be held Thursday afternoon.

Johnston
Mary Estes Baker –
Mary Estes, daughter of Elmer and Belle Baker, was
born at Mortimer, north of Diagonal on February 9, 1891 and died at her home
near Lenox, Iowa, On Oct. 24, 1946. She
was 55 years of age. Her school days
were spent in Jefferson township and Shannon City high
school. She taught school in Tingley and Jefferson townships.
On June 30, 1909, she was united in marriage to Veril Johnston. To
this union were born four children, Vern of Diagonal, Merna of Macedonia, Helen of Clearfield and Myron at home. Other members of the family are Rhoda, her
daughter-in-law, Horace, her son-in-law; three grandchildren, two brothers,
Paul and Ellis Baker of Scotts Bluff, Nebr., and many nephews, nieces, brothers
and sisters-in-law. She was preceded in
death by her parents, one sister, and one brother.
When a small girl she joined the Christian church of
Shannon City. During the course of years she attended church also in Diagonal, Tingley, Clearfield, and in a small country church. She was a faithful church workers, serving as pianist for years.
“Estie” as people called
her was known for her cheerfulness, her intense interest in living and her
kindness to everyone.
She became ill in the spring of 1937 and never fully
regained her health. She has been
practically bedfast the last eight months and has suffered greatly. She spoke often of going to her reward. The end came peacefully while she was
surrounded by her family. Funeral
services were held Sunday, October 27th at the Christian church in
Clearfield with Rev. Madson in charge. Interment was in Clearfield cemetery.

Thomas
W. Knapp, resident of the Prescott community since 1940, passed away at his
home there on July 30, from a heart attack. Mrs. Knapp died in 1943.

Mrs.
Robert McCahan died July 18th at Beaumont,
California. The family lived at one time
on the C. E. Craven farm south of Lenox and left here forty years ago. Mrs. McCahan will
be remembered by many of the older residents of Lenox and vicinity.

McVey,
William –
Wm.
McVey, prominent farmer living four miles east of Lenox, committed suicide by
hanging Wednesday. McVey, 80 years of
age, and a bachelor, had lived alone except for hired help for many years. Lately his eye sight had been failing and his
health was not as good, reasons which could be ascribed as leading to his self
destruction.
A
brother, Daniel, also committed suicide on the same farm in 1923. He was 58 years old at the time.
Dick
Burrell has been staying at the McVey farm and Wednesday he went to a neighbor’s
to help with harvesting, leaving about noon. On his return at five o’clock he found the body which had been hanging
for some time.
Mr.
McVey was born on this farm and had spent his entire life there.
Funeral
services will be held at the Arnold funeral home on Friday of this week at
2:30.

William,
son of James and Delia McVey, was born June 15, 1866 on the farm in Platte township where he had spent his entire life, making him the
oldest continuous farmer in Platte Township. He passed away July 31, 1946 at the age of 80 years, one month and
sixteen days. He was the last member of
the James McVey family. His father and
mother preceded him in death several years ago. He was laid to rest beside his father and brother in the Lenox cemetery.

Meadows,
Charles A. –
Charles
A. Meadows, 56, was born in Lagro, Indiana, and
passed away August 1 [1946], in the Veterans Hospital at San Fernando,
California. He was the son of Columbus and Mary
Meadows. His early years were spent in the Lenox vicinity
and later in Creston, where he was employed by the C. B. & Q. Railroad
Company. His wife, Jessie McChessney preceded him in death about 20 years ago. He is survived by one sister, Mattie Nelson
Dixon and a nephews, Lloyd Nelson of Longview, Washington, also a number of
other nieces and nephews. He was a
member of the Christian church and served in World War I. Funeral services were held at the Arnold
Funeral Home on Thursday afternoon, August 8 at 2 o’clock and were in charge of
the American Legion. Rev.
Charles Hagee officiating. Burial in Fairview cemetery.

Fred Moiled, 68, died at her home north of Lone Star Station on Tuesday
morning, at nine o’clock. Funeral

afternoon at two thirty. Interment will be at
Graceland cemetery. She leaves a son and
two daughter, her husband having passed away several
years ago.

Parker,
Homer –
Bedford Times Press: Homer Parker, 65, took his own life by hanging at Athelstan presumably
Saturday evening. The body was found
late Monday afternoon in the hayloft of the barn on the C. R. Sickles place,
just across the road from the Parker home, when Mr. Sickles went to the barn to
do his chores. Parker had used a halter
rope belonging to Sickles, to do the deed.
Parker was unmarried and was caring for his father,
who is in failing health. The funeral
services were held at the Community Church in Athelstan Wednesday afternoon,
conducted by the Rev. and Mrs. T. J. Overholt. Burial was in the Athelstan cemetery.

Louisa county last its oldest resident recently, when Mrs.
August Strub Ruppert, 99,
died at her home in Morning Sun. Mrs. Ruppert, only one year younger than the state of Iowa,
survived her 99th birthday by only two hours.

Will Sanders, 84, passed away at her home at 10:45 Wednesday evening, September
25 [1946]. Mrs. Sanders had been ill for
the past two weeks but in frail health for some time. She with her family has lived in their
present home in Lenox for the past forty years. Funeral services will be held on Saturday afternoon, September 28 at 2:30 o’clock at the
Christian church with Rev. Chas. Hagee in charge.

Sanders,
Lucy Alice Tapp –
Lucy
Alice Sanders, daughter of Robert F. and Nancy Davis Tapp,
was born in Manongahela County, West Virginia
February 15, 1862 and passed from this life in her home in Lenox Wednesday
evening at 10:45, Sept. 25, 1946, at the age of 84 years, 6 months and 10 days.
Mrs.
Sanders grew to young womanhood in West Virginia where she met and married
William Sanders, December 13, 1879. Establishing a home there, the couple soon felt the urge to push west
and in 1894 established their home at Old Union City near Kent, where they
lived until 1907, when they moved to Lenox to their present home.
To
this union was born four children, one dying in infancy. Those surviving are her husband, two
daughters, Mrs. Ella Worthington of Chicago and Bertie in the home, and a son
Harvey of Creston, six grandchildren, Roy Worthington of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs.
Ruby Hoppe, Eugene and Glen Worthington of Chicago, Mrs. Thressa Weisshaar and Darl Sanders
of Creston; five great grandchildren and an innumerable host of friends and
neighbors. Mrs. Sanders united with the
Christian church at Old Union City, later transferring her membership to this
church, which she loved and enjoyed attending until incapacitated by ill health
and age.

Shepherd returned recently from attending the funeral of his father at Klamath
Falls, Oregon. The obituary handed us
tells of his life:
Walter
Theodore Shepherd, a resident of Klamath Falls, Oregon for the last 12 years
passed away in that city on Thursday, July 11, 1946 at 3:22 p.m. He was a native of Montgomery county, Iowa,
and at the time of his death was aged 70 years, 3 months and 18 days. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Myrtle Shepherd
of that city; eight sons, Otho of New Market, Iowa,
Willie of Lenox, Iowa, Merle of Midland, Oregon, Silas of Sprague River,
Oregon, Leonard of Sacramento, California and Paul V. Shepherd of Klamath
Falls, Oregon; one daughter, Mrs. Marie Ridenour of Star, Idaho; two brothers,
Russell of Pittsburg, California and
Charles Shepherd of Villisca, Iowa; four sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Gaskill and Mrs. Ruth Sparger of
Villisca, Iowa, Mrs. Bertha Parcher of Oakland,
California; and Mrs. Pearl Craighead of Healdsburg, California; 26
grandchildren and six great greandchildren.

Shum, Stella
Piper –
Stella
Piper, daughter of Benjamin and Sarah Piper, was born in Page County, Iowa,
April 1, 1874, and departed from this life October 14, 1946, in Conway at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Murray, at the age of 72 years, 6 months and 13
days.
The
early part of her life was spent on a farm five miles north of Clarinda, later
moving to Taylor County where she spent the remainder of her live.
Two
years ago she moved to Conway to make her home with Mr. and Mrs. Murray and was
cared for by them during her last illness.
On
March 3, 1892, she was united in marriage to William Shum. To this union three sons were born; she
leaves to mourn her departure her three sons, Orie C.
and Lowell C. of Lenox, Ia., Floyd E. Shum of Bedford, Ia., one sister, Mrs. Gertie Weller of Conway, two granddaughters, Carroll Shum
and Wilma Novinger and the foster daughter Mrs. Ruth Dickinson and two
daughters and one son of Ames, Ia. A number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Her husband, parents, one brother and one
sister preceded her in death.
When a young
girl she united with the Methodist church and remained a faithful and active
member until her death.
Funeral
services were held from the Methodist church in Conway Wednesday, October 16,
conducted by Rev. W. J. Weber. Burial in Gravity cemetery.

Smith,
Emma J. Baker
Mrs.
Emma J. Smith, 83, of Kent died at 5:08 p.m. Wednesday, September 11 [1946] at
the Jones convalescent home at Creston. She had been ill two years. She
was born near Lima, Ohio, March 15, 1863, the daughter of Marion and Catherine
Baker. She came to Union county March
13, 1873 and had lived here since that time. She was married in Union county to Henry Smith on December 25,
1881. He preceded her in death September
1, 1943. Mrs. Smith had lived in Kent
for 39 years.
She is
survived by four daughters, Laura Lucas of Creston, Ethel Schofield of Kent,
Edith Black of Ketchum, Idaho and Lizzie Herr of Algona, Ia., and two sons,
Donald Smith of Creston and Charles Smith of Scottsbluff, Nebraska. A daughter, Sarah Madden preceded her in
death.
Funeral
services were held at the Methodist church in Kent at 2 p.m. Saturday, Rev. R. W.
Meeker of that church officiating. Burial was in Morgan cemetery near Kent.

Tomlin,
Blaine -
A man
and a woman were killed when their plane crashed on a farm seven miles east of
Lenox at 11 a.m. Monday. The victims
were Miss Virginia Wiley, 34, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Blaine Tomlin, 37, of
Peoria Heights, Illinois. Forrest Whipp, on whose farm the plane crashed, said that the plane
evidently developed engine trouble as the pilot changed his course, then banked
the plane sharply. Mr. Whipp said he judged the plane was flying at a height of
2000 feet when the crash came. The left
wing seemingly hit the ground and the plane, a Stinson Voyager, was
demolished. It did not catch fire. Mr. Whipp and his
father, Lloyd Whipp arrived at the scene a few
minutes after the crash and called Sheriff H. P. Todd of Mt. Ayr.
Parts
of Miss Wiley’s body was found 160 feet from where the engine
was embedded in the earth and parts of Tomlin’s body was about 25 feet
away. The bodies were taken to the Crewe
funeral home at Diagonal.
A
large crowd of people soon gathered at the scene of the crash. Miss Wiley, who was employed at the Collins
Radio Corporation at Cedar Rapids had been a weekend
visitor at the Claude Stevens home near Conway and Mr. Tomlin had arrived at
the Stevens home on Sunday evening, leaving his home at Peoria, Illinois. He had taken different members of the Stevens
family and friends for rides in his plane on Sunday.
He and
Miss Wiley were on their way to Cedar Rapids when the crash occurred, having
left the Stevens home at Conway only a few minutes before. W. M. Tull, who
lives one and one half miles from the Whipp farm and
Harry Frederickson who lives near Diagonal were deputized to remain at the
scene Monday night.

Victor,
Fred E. –
Fred
E. Victor, 40, of Prescott, was found dead in his wrecked automobile on an
Adams county road between Prescott and Cromwell early Tuesday. His automobile had gone in to a deep ditch
and turned over and Victor’s body was found inside the car. It is believed that Victor suffered a heart
attack while driving and the car left the road when he became unconscious. An investigation is to be made by the Adams
county coroner. After the inquest the
Adams county coroner stated that Victor had died from a broken neck. The accident occurred 2 miles east and a mile
north of Prescott.

Lucy –
Lucy
Westlake, daughter of Jefferson and Grace Haney Westlake, born in Cass county
Iowa, October 11, 1883 and passed away at her home west of Lenox September 3,
1946 at the age of 62 years, 10 months and 22 days.
When a
small child she moved with her parents to Montgomery county and from there to Adams county. She
spent the most of her life in the vicinity of Corning. She is survived by three brothers, Arthur of
Brooks, Jess of Corning and John of Lenox, and one sister, Mrs. Belle Hardisty of Carbon. Also one son William of Lenox and three grandchildren and a host of
nieces and nephews.
Lucy
had a paralytic stroke Wednesday, August 28th and only lived 6
days. She has always made her home with
her twin brother, John. She was a loving
and faithful mother and sister.

Virginia –
A man

the plane sharply. Mr. Whipp said he judged the plane was flying at a height of
2000 feet when the crash came. The left
wing seemingly hit the ground and the plane, a Stinson Voyager, was
demolished. It did not catch fire. Mr. Whipp and his
father, Lloyd Whipp arrived at the scene a few
minutes after the crash and called Sheriff H. P. Todd of Mt. Ayr.
Parts
of Miss Wiley’s body was found 160 feet from where the engine
was embedded in the earth and parts of Tomlin’s body was about 25 feet
away. The bodies were taken to the Crewe
funeral home at Diagonal.
A
large crowd of people soon gathered at the scene of the crash. Miss Wiley, who was employed at the Collins
Radio Corporation at Cedar Rapids had been a weekend visitor at the Claude Stevens home near Conway
and Mr. Tomlin had arrived at the Stevens home on Sunday evening, leaving his
home at Peoria, Illinois. He had taken
different members of the Stevens family and friends for rides in his plane on
Sunday.
He and
Miss Wiley were on their way to Cedar Rapids when the crash occurred, having
left the Stevens home at Conway only a few minutes before. W. M. Tull, who
lives one and one half miles from the Whipp farm and
Harry Frederickson who lives near Diagonal were deputized to remain at the
scene Monday night.
