Nancy Jane McNees

Near shady wall a rose once grew

Budded and blossomed in God's

            free light,

Watered and fed by morning dew,

Shedding its sweetness day and

            night

As it grew and blossomed fair

            and tall

Slowly rising to loftier height

It came to a crevice in the wall,

Thru' which there shone a beam

            of light,

Onward it crept with added

            strength

With never a thought of fear or

            pride,

It followed the light thru' the

            crevice's length,

And unfolded itself on the other

            side

The light the dew, the broadening

            view

Were found the same as they

            were before,

And it lost itself in beauties new,

Breathing its fragrance more

            and more."

On Friday morning at 8:30, Mrs. J. [oseph] H. McNees, one of the best-known and much beloved residents of Bedford was called to her eternal rest. Mrs. McNees had been a quiet sufferer for years. Since the death of her husband in May last she has failed gradually, her illness becoming serious during recent months. Everything possible was done to relieve her suffering but to no avail.

Nancy Jane Pickering, daughter of George and Katheryn [Hayes] Pickering, was born May 31, 1860, in Blunt county, Tennessee, where she grew to womanhood and was married December 31, 1882, to Joseph H. McNees. In 1884 they came to Missouri and six years later to Taylor county, Iowa, where the remainder of their lives were spent. They have lived in Bedford the last seventeen years. She leaves to mourn her demise, three sons, four daughters and thirteen grandchildren, two sons having died in infancy. The surviving children are: Mrs. Airy Cummings of Halsey, Oregon; George P. [atrick], of Bedford, Ia.; John F. [ranklin], of Vida, Mont; Lucina, of Bedford, Iowa; Mrs. Olive Mechlin of Duluth, Minn.; Mrs. Goldie Weed of Charter Oak, Ia.; and Theodore E., of Fort Collins, Colo., all being present when she was laid to rest. She leaves also three brothers, John H. [enry] Pickering of Gravity, Iowa, Thomas Pickering of Wakeeney, Kans.; Samuel Pickering of Hardisty, Alberta, Canada; two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Nagle of Sheridan, Oregon, and Mrs. Mary Ann Shanks of Limestone, Tennessee. In early girlhood she united with the United Brethren Church, later becoming a faithful member and worker in the Methodist Episcopal Church of Bedford, Ia. A loveable personality won her many friends who will grieve her loss. A Christian woman, a devoted mother, her last prayer was beseeching her Master to care for her children.

"Shall claim of death cause us to

grieve,

And make our courage faint or

fall?

Nay! Let us faith and hope

receive

The rose still grows beyond the

wall,

Scattering fragrance far and wide,

Just as it did in days of yore

Just as it did on the other side

Just as it will forever more."

The funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church in Bedford, Ia., at 2:00 o'clock the afternoon of March 13, 1928, and her body was laid to rest in Old Memory cemetery near New Market, Iowa.

Two Teen-Age Boys Drown Wednesday In Tamerius Farm Pond Near Athelstan

ATHELSTAN — An afternoon swim ended in tragedy Wednesday for two teen-age Taylor County boys, who drowned in the chilly waters of a farm pond near Athelstan at about 4 p. m.

Dead are Donald Edward McNeese, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orville McNeese of Bedford, and Lawrence Gerald Tamerius, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. Woody Tamerius of Athelstan.

The two boys were uncle and nephew, since Mrs. McNeese is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tamerius.

Recovery of the bodies was made at 5:30 p.m. by Leland Stitt of Pattonsburg, Mo., who was passing by the farm, located a mile north of Athelstan. He brought the bodies up after several persons had tried unsuccessfully to recover them.

Authorities give the following account of the drownings:

Mr. and Mrs. McNeese, Donald and his sister Sarah, about 14, were visiting the Tamerius family Wednesday. Another Tamerius grandson, Vernon O'Hara, about 10, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles O'Hara of Grant City, was also visiting there.

The three boys, Donald, Lawrence and Vernon went down to the Tamerius Farm pond, a dammed-up ditch, at about 3.30 p.m. None of the boys could swim, but evidently attempted it without their parents' knowledge.

Vernon said the older boys jumped into the pond and he “saw they were in trouble.” He started to go into the water to help them, saw that he couldn't, and ran to the farm home for help. He arrived at the farmhouse at 4:10 p.m.

A large crowd soon gathered at the pond, one eye-witness said, and several men attempted to bring up the bodies, among them Dr. Frank Matteson of Grant City.

Stitt, who didn't arrive at the pond until nearly 5:30, made only two dives to surface the bodies, the witness said. Dr. Matteson pronounced them dead when the recovery was made.

Bud Wetmore and Clifford Hanshaw of the Bedford Volunteer Fire department went to Athelstan with the city respirator when they learned of the accident. The equipment was not used, however, when it was discovered how long the bodies had been in the water.

'The pond has a sharp drop-off, and reaches about 10 feet in depth in the deepest part. The bodies were recovered in about eight feet of water.

It is believed by authorities that one or both of the boys got cramps, from the cold pond water.

Sheriff Harry E. Lucas was called to Athelstan after the bodies were recovered. Justice of the Peace Ed Beard of Bedford went with him to act as coroner, in the absence of County Coroner Earl J. Stone.

Mr. and Mrs. Tamerius are the parents of four other children, George of the home, Mrs. McNeese, Mrs. O'Hara and Mrs. Richard Saville of Redding.

Sarah is the only other McNeese child.

Services for Donald will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wetmore funeral home. Rev. Robert M. Peters will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery.

Services for Lawrence will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Athelstan with burial there.
