[Scott, Jewell Beatrice Abernathy]

Jewell Scott 50, Last Rites Held August 12

Funeral services for Mrs. Chester (Jewell) Scott, 50, of Bedford, held August 12 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, were conducted by Rev. Ollie Odle. Mrs. Scott died August 10, 1973, at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital. Interment was at Lexington Cemetery, northeast of Bedford.

Jewell Beatrice Abernathy, daughter of Ernest and Ethel Abernathy, was born at Murphy, Oklahoma, October 11, 1922. She was married on January 18, 1948 to Chester Scott. Shortly after their marriage they lived on a farm and adopted a son, Michael Scott.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester, and her parents.

At one time Jewell and her husband owned and operated the Junction Cafe and Service Station. After her husband's death in 1963 she served as a waitress in several   restaurants   in the Bedford community. During the past ten years she has been both mother    and father to her son.

She is survived by her son, Michael, of the home; her step-mother, Addie Abernathy, Stevensville, Texas; one   sister, Merle      Clarkson, Fontana, Calif.; one brother, Gordon Abernathy, Blockton, Iowa; several nieces; nephews and many friends.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Bedford.

Jewell will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Margaret Keefe  Rites Held Aug. 18 In Corning   

Funeral   services for Margaret   Keefe, 78, of Corning, were held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Corning August 18     with   Rev.   Cloyd Connolly officiating. Miss Keefe died in Colonial Manor Nursing Home in   Corning   August   15, 1973. She had been in failing health about a year and had been a resident at Colonial Manor the past six weeks.  Interment was   at Calvary Cemetery, Corning.

Margaret Keefe, daughter of William and Mary Welch Keefe, was born January 29, 1895 on a farm in Holt township, Taylor County, Ia.

She spent all of her life on the family farm south of Corning except two years in California. She taught school six years in Holt Township.

She is survived by two brothers, Jim   and John Keefe; a sister, Mary   McCann, all   of Corning; three nephews and a    niece.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Wallace and Grace Walsh, of Creston, Ia.

Carrie McColm, 99 

Funeral   services for Mrs. Sherman (Carrie) McColm, 99 years, 11 months, 20 days, of Bedford, formerly of Gravity, were held December 1 at the Gravity Christian Church conducted by Rev. George Carman.  Mrs. McColm   died November 29, 1973 in St. Francis Hospital    in Maryville, Mo. Interment was                 at Washington Cemetery, Gravity. 

Carrie Elizabeth Turner was born to   Moses   and Josephine Turner on a farm near Bedford,

Iowa, December 9, 1873.                  

She was married to Sherman Tecumseh McColm July 27, 1890 in Palco, Kansas, where her daughter, Gertrude, was born. Paul and Lorena were born near Persia, Iowa and the three youngest, Jesse, Howard and Bethel, were born on the farm near Gravity.

Her husband died in February of 1926 and she and Jesse ran the farm until 1936. She lived with Gertrude several years during which time she spent a year in California. Then she bought a little home in Gravity where she lived until her son, Paul, retired in 1961 and determined to make a home for his mother for the rest of her life.

He bought a home in Mountain Home, Arkansas, and they lived there ten years as did her daughter, Lorena, and her husband, Harold Stanton, leaving   when the   climate proved   detrimental to the health of the     daughter.                  

She and Paul then lived in Bedford, Ia., until Paul died January 21 of this year when she went to live with her youngest daughter, Bethel, and her husband, Lloyd Conkling, where she stayed until she was taken to the hospital November 14.    

Gertrude, Mrs. Lee Knodle, died September 13,1954, in Fort Collins, Colorado   and Jesse, June 2, 1971, in Boise, Idaho.    

She leaves three of her children; 11 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; a sister, Teressa Harmon, West Des Moines, Ia.

One grandson, a great grandson   and a daughter have preceded her in death.

Her beautiful handwork may be found in many homes of friends and relatives, as she kept busy with that after she was not able to be active. Her home was always open to friends and relatives during her busy farm life.

Final Rites For Mrs. John Cordell February 9

Funeral services for Mrs. John (Juanita) Cordell, 67, of Athelstan, held February 9 at the Athelstan Community Church, were conducted by Carl Cummings. Mrs. Cordell died February 7, 1973 at Ringgold County Hospital in Mt. Ayr Ia.

[Mary] Juanita Rusco, daughter of John and Hilda Anderson Rusco, was born September 21, 1905, at Athelstan, Iowa. She grew to adulthood in the Athelstan Community.

On July 26, 1922, she was united in marriage to John W. [illie] Cordell at Grant City, Missouri, and they lived all of their married life in Athelstan.

To this union were born three daughters and four sons.

She was preceded in death by her father and three brothers, Guy, Ray, and Roy Rusco.

She is survived by her mother, Hilda Rusco, residing in the nursing home at Grant City, Mo.; her husband, John W. Cordell and children: Geraldine Young and her husband, Henry; Pauline Young and her husband Burtle; Coleen Fleetwood and her husband, William; Gene Cordell and his wife, June; Leonard Cordell and his wife, Joyce; Doyle Cordell and Coline Kelly Cordell; 32 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; three sisters: Gwilda Schuster, Blockton, Mildred Joanas, of Blockton, and Delilah Pickering of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; other relatives and many friends.

She was a kind and loving wife, mother, friend and neighbor, and she will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Gregory Chilcote Killed in Calif. Cycle Crash

Gregory [William] Chilcote, 27, Fremont, Calif., was killed in a motorcycle accident outside Fremont October 22. Born in St. Joseph, he moved to California with his family when he   was young.

Survivors   include his wife, Mrs.    Donna [Kleitz] Chilcote, a   son, Christian, and a daughter, Jolene, all of the home; his parents, Mr.    and Mrs.  [Maurice] William Chilcote [Bertha Helen Bose], Fremont; two brothers, Philip Chilcote, Denver, Colo., and Steven Chilcote, Fremont; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. J. [ohn] H. [enry] Chilcote [Alma Thompson], St. Joseph; his maternal grandfather, William Bose, San Francisco; and two uncles, Kenneth Chilcote, San Jose, Calif., and Merrill Chilcote, editor of the editorial page of The St. Joseph News-Press. His father was reared in Bedford.

Services were held October 24 at the Chapel of the Roses, Fremont, with burial in Fremont.

Belva Marshall

Funeral services for Belva Josephine Marshall, 87, of Lenox, a long time Bedford resident, were held November 14 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Carl Cummings officiating. Miss Marshall died at Rosary Hospital in Corning November 12. Interment was at Conway Cemetery, Conway, Ia.

Belva Josephine Marshall, second daughter of Frank and Tabitha Morgan Marshall, was born on a farm near Gravity, Ia., on May 12, 1886.

She united with the Methodist Church in Gravity in 1900 and attended church there until the family moved to a farm near Grant City, Mo.

As long as her health would permit she attended church at Mt. Vernon, a country church not far from the home.

After moving from there to a farm near Conway she attended church there until they moved to Bedford and she transferred her membership to the Bedford Methodist Church.

She was a member of the Triangle Club and the Wild Rose Club of Bedford.

She was one of a family of ten children and leaves with memories, three brothers, Leon Marshall, Bedford, Charles Marshall, Plymouth, Mich., and Clarence Marshall, Kansas City, Mo.; three sisters, Ollie Ferguson of Pearl Terrace Manor, Bedford, Mable Layman, Rockwell City, Ia., and Elsie Longfellow, Wichita Falls, Texas; many nephews and nieces for whom Aunt Belva always had time; other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Pearl Marshall, two brothers, William Marshall, Woodward, Ia., and Homer Marshall, Bedford.

After her parents' death she still lived in the parental home as long as her health permitted. Then for two years she made her home with her brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Leon Marshall. Then she entered the Lenox Nursing Home where she has lived for the last 11 years.

Belva made friends wherever she went. At her request Carl Cummings had charge of her service and nephews served as pallbearers.

Walter R. Trumbo Last Rites Held Here October 1

Funeral services for Walter R. Trumbo, 85, of Denver, Colo., formerly of Bedford, were held at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Carl Cummings officiating. Mr. Trumbo died at Beth Israel Hospital in Denver September 27, 1973. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery.

Walter Raymond Trumbo, second son of Thomas L. Trumbo and Emma [Florence] Curry Trumbo, was born December 17, 1887, in Greenview, Illinois.

The family moved to Oakland, Iowa, from Illinois, in 1904 and moved to a farm southwest of Bedford where he grew to manhood.

On December 24, 1907, he was united in marriage to Mary A. [nne] Henderson and to this union a son, Howard, was born. His wife, Mary, and their infant son died in December 1924.

He was engaged in farming and later moved to Bedford where he worked for the Standard Oil Company. In 1927 he moved to Denver, Colorado and was employed by the Fargo Oil Company until his retirement.

He was a member of the Baptist Church of Bedford.

On November 3, 1951, he was united in marriage to Rose Hensler of Denver, Colo.

He was also preceded in death by his father and mother, an infant brother, William, and brothers Clay and Paul.

He is survived by his wife, Rose, and son, Howard, of Denver, Colo.; one brother, Carl Trumbo, of Denver, Colo.; two sisters, Pearl Trumbo and Mrs. Ruby Snyder of Bedford; nieces; nephews and other relatives and many friends.

He was a loving husband and father, and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Merle Moore, 66, Last Rites Held October 17

Funeral services for Merle Moore, 66, of Sharpsburg, were held October 17 at Bender Funeral Home in Lenox with Rev. Floyd Newbrough officiating. Mr. Moore died at his home October 14, 1973. Interment was at Prairie Rose Cemetery.

He was born January 23, 1907, at the home of his parents seven miles southwest of Corning, Ia., in Adams County, where he spent his childhood. He was the second son of Albert and Mary Moore.

On Sept. 5, 1926 he was united in marriage to Daisy Hunter of Bedford. They moved to their present home in the spring of 1942. He was a farmer all his life, also doing other work for several years. He drove a school bus for quite some time and did carpenter work.

He and his wife were the parents of two children, Kenneth Paul who died in infancy and Mary Kathryn Bishop of Indianola, Iowa.

He is survived by his wife, Daisy; daughter, Kathy, and husband, Donald Bishop, of Indianola; two grandsons whom he loved very much, Kenneth Eugene Werner and Gregory Michael Anderson; three brothers, Harold of Nodaway, Iowa, Carl of Corning, and Wayne of San Diego, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant son, Kenneth.

Mr. Moore united with the Fairview Christian Church nine miles southwest of Corning when a small boy.

He was a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather, a friend to many and was honest in his dealings with all.

He leaves many friends and other relatives as well as his family and will be sadly missed by all.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ralph (Vivian) Andrew, 74, of New Market, held November 9 at the United Methodist Church in New Market, was conducted by Rev. Charles Bissinger. Mrs. Andrew died November 5, 1973 at Colonial Manor in Corning. Interment was at Guss Cemetery, Guss, Ia.

Mrs. Andrew was born Nov. 24, 1898, in Page County, the oldest daughter of H. [arley] C. and Maude Negley McCoy.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Adrain, of Shenandoah; a daughter, Mrs. Dale (Doris) Anderson of Martelle; four grandchildren; two brothers, Ted McCoy of Villisca and Alva of Spokane, Wash.; sisters, Mrs. Harry (Mabel) Cooney of Villisca, Mrs. Roy (Maravene) Springs of Brooks and Mrs. Ray (Reva) Stamps of Gravity; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Pearl McCoy of Clarinda.

Vivian M. Andrew Last Rites Held November 9

Funeral services for Mrs. Ralph P. (Vivian M.) Andrew, 74, of New Market, held November 9 at the Methodist Church in New Market, were conducted by Rev. Charles Bissinger. Mrs. Andrew died November 5,1973 at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Corning, Ia. Interment was at Guss Cemetery, Guss, Ia.

Vivian M. Andrew was born November 24, 1898 near Hepburn, Iowa to Harley C. and Maude Negley McCoy.

At the age of 14 she was baptized in the E. Nodaway River and became a member of the Fairview   Church   of   Christ.

She was united in marriage to Ralph P. Andrew on February 19, 1919 in the home of her parents at Guss. To this union two children, Adrain and Doris, were born.

They maintained their home in the Guss and New Market communities where they farmed.

She is survived by her husband, two children; daughter-in-law, Vesta; son-in-law, Dale; four grandchildren, Laurence and Warren Andrew and Denean and Dean Anderson; brothers, Ted McCoy, Villisca, Alva McCoy, Spokane, Wash.; sisters, Mrs. Harry (Mabel) Cooney, Villisca, Mrs. Ray (Reva) Stamps, Gravity, Mrs. Roy (Maravene) Spring, Brooks; sister-in-law, Mrs. Harley (Pearl) McCoy, of Clarinda; a host of relatives and friends.

In 1952 she was taken into membership at the New Market Methodist Church by confession of faith. She was a loyal worker in all church activities until her health failed. She received a life membership pin for the Missions of Christian Service, the field for which she had worked so faithfully.

She has been a member of the New Market Unit #300 American Legion Auxiliary for 50 years and held several offices, including unit president and co-pres.

She was a Girls 4-H County Committee woman for 15 years.

Mrs Ralph (Vivian) Andrew, 74, of New Market died Monday [November 5, 1973] at Colonial Manor in Corning, and services will be at 2 pm Friday at the New Market Methodist Church with the Rev Charles Bissinger officiating. Burial will be in the Guss cemetery.

Visitation is this Thursday at 7:30 pm at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford. Casket bearers at the services will be Laurence Andrew, Warren Andrew, Dean Anderson, Bill Pratt, Wesley Glassgow and Otis Wood.

Mrs Andrew was born Nov 24, 1898, in Page County, the oldest daughter of H[arley] C and Maude Negley McCoy.

Max E. Smith, 57, Last Rites Held November 8       

Funeral services for Max E. Smith, 57, of Des Moines, were held November 8 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Rev. Robert Truitt officiating. Mr. Smith died November 5, 1973, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Ia., following a severe heart attack. Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity, Ia.           

Max E. Smith, son of Ross E. [ldridge] and Sue [Burrows] Smith was born in Conway, Iowa, January 3, 1916. 

His earlier days were spent in Clarinda, Iowa where he was graduated from high school and junior college. He was a graduate of Drake University in Des Moines, Ia., where he received his degree of Science and Education.  

He was united in marriage to Lois I. [rene] Turnbell [Turnbull] on August 11, 1937, and to this union a daughter, Cheryl   Lynne, was born.

For many years he was high school band director in several schools and led many bands to first place in competition.

He was a member of the Methodist Church and had been a church choir director in Muscatine, Iowa.        

He had been a president of the   Civic   Music   Association, a member of A.T. O and Phi Mu Alpha while at Drake University.    

At present he was representative of National Creditors Inc. of Des Moines, Ia.

He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Cheryl Murray, of Richmond, Calif.; his mother, Mrs. Sue Smith, of Des Moines; two aunts, Mrs. Nelle Davis of Lenox and Mrs. L. A. Longfellow of Bedford; one uncle, Wayne Smith, Houston, Texas.

Max had an outgoing personality and will be sadly missed by all.

Ray Carter Carroll Last Rites Held November 7  

Funeral    services    for Ray    Carter Carroll, 70, of Sheridan were held November 7 at the Isadora Church of Christ with Rev. Ward Campbell officiating. Mr. Carroll died November 4,   

1973 in Ringgold County Hospital, Mt.   Ayr, Iowa.  Interment was at the Isadora Cemetery. 

Ray Carter Carroll, son of    the late Ira Vaughn and Frances Ray Carroll, was born in Worth County, Missouri   near Isadora, Missouri, April   7, 1903.      

Ray united with the Christian Church and was baptized when a young   man   at Isadora, Mo. On August 26, 1928 he was united in marriage to Anna Dorcyle   Armstrong   in Blockton, Iowa.   To this union two children were born.          

He is survived by one daughter, Venita   llene Sickels, and husband, Glade, of Athelstan, 

Iowa; one son, R. C, and wife, Marlene, of    Sheridan; three granddaughters, Dorcyle Kay of

South Bend, Indiana, Rita Mae Sickels Hamilton and husband, Mike, of Omaha, Nebraska; and Frances   Ruth Sickels of Lincoln, Nebr.; three   brothers, Roy and Harvey of Ravenwood and   Leslie of Skidmore, Mo.; one sister, Gertie Shockley, of Skidmore; a host of other relatives and friends.           

He is preceded in death by his wife, Dorcyle, mother, father, brothers, Gilbert, George and

infant   brother   and   a   sister, Nellie Saffel.      

Ray   spent his entire life in Worth   County, Missouri   and Taylor County, Iowa where he was engaged   in farming until failing health forced him into semi-retirement.

Lyle Martins'   Daughter, 14, Killed by Car

Rebecca Sue Martin, 14, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle E. Martin, Scottsdale, Ariz., was fatally injured when struck by a car as she was returning home from school November 1.

Police reported the driver left the   scene of the accident, after carrying her on the hood of his car for about 40 feet. The car was followed by an off-duty Scottsdale detective, who forced the driver to stop and return to the   scene of the accident.

The driver was charged with leaving the scene of the accident, driving under the influence of alcohol and with possession of marijuana.

Becky Sue was a student at Tonto School in Scottsdale.

Becky Sue leaves her parents, three sisters, Deanna, Bobbi Ann and Judy; also her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Marr of Bedford.

Services   were   held at the Messinger Mortuary, Scottsdale, with interment at Green Acres Cemetery, November 4.

Raymond Weaver

Funeral services for Raymond Orlando Weaver, 68, of Blockton, held October 28 at the Blockton Christian Church, were conducted by Rev. G. W. Swan. Mr. Weaver died in Ringgold County Hospital, Mt. Ayr, Iowa October 26, 1973. Interment was at Athelstan Cemetery, Athelstan, Iowa.

Raymond Orlando Weaver, son of Roy [Orlando] and Effie [Adams] Weaver, was born at Blockton, Iowa September 28, 1905.

He grew up in the Blockton community and chose farming as his initial occupation. Then during World War II he served as substitute mail carrier and later in life worked for the Blockton Oil Company until ill health forced him to retire. Early in life he suffered from pneumonia, which later grew gradually worse.

Early in life he was united in marriage to Mabel Hiatt, and she died of an accident. Then he was married to Fern Gollady. To this union three children were born: Marie, Duane and Thelma. She preceded him in death in 1931.

In 1933 he was united in marriage to Joyce Scott. To this union four children were born: Mabel Fern, Donald Dean, Faye and Mary Ann.

In later life he was united in marriage to Geraldine Jennings.

Besides his father and mother, Roy and Effie Weaver, of Blockton he is survived by his sister, Fredia Smith, of Minneapolis, Minn.; sons, Duane and wife, Virginia, of Sharpsburg; Donald and wife, Mary, of Blockton; daughters, Marie Campbell and husband, Paul, of Blockton; Thelma Johnson and husband, Mike, Modale, Ia.; Mabel Fern Light and husband, Don, of La Clair, Ia., Faye Weidler, and husband, Dell, of Iowa City, Ia., and Mary Ann Beaver and husband, Larry, of Des Moines; 18 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, a number of nephews and nieces; a host of other relatives and friends.       

Buck, as he was known to his friends, was patient in his suffering, always willing to help others, and was loyal to his aged father and mother in their declining years.

Raymond Weaver, 68, Rites Held Oct. 28 In Blockton

Funeral services for Raymond Orlando Weaver, 68, of Blockton, were held October 28 in the Christian Church in Blockton, conducted by Rev. G. N. Swan. Mr. Weaver died October 26, 1973, at Ringgold County Hospital in Mt. Ayr Interment was at Athelstan Cemetery, Athelstan.
