Quincy Hickman Rites July 17

Funeral services for Quincy Madison Hickman, 81, former Taylor County resident, held July 17 at State Street Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, were conducted by Carl Cummings.  Mr. Hickman died July 13, 1965 in Denver, Colo.  Interment was at Berea Cemetery, Bedford.

Included in the services was the following obituary:

Quincy Madison Hickman, son of James [Anderson] and Esther [Varner] Hickman, was born May 15, 1884 at Soddy, Tenn.

When a young boy, he moved with his parents to Comanche, Okla., where he met and married Marie Ann Dorr Feb. 14, 1911.  To this union four children were born:  Anna Stephens of Denver, Colo., Ruth Thompson, Conway; Vadna Hickman, Boulder, Colo.; and John Quincy Hickman who died at the age of two years.

In the fall of 1916 he moved with his family to Caddoa, Colo., where he homesteaded a farm on which he lived until 1926, when the family moved to a farm five miles south of Bedford, Ia.  Here he lived until after the death of his wife in 1940.  He then moved to Colorado Springs where, except for time spent visiting with his daughters, he spent his remaining years.  He was with his daughter, Mrs. Harold Stephens, at the time of his death.

He thought of Bedford as his home, where he had many friends and fond memories.  He was a member of the Berea Church of Christ south of Bedford in the community where he had lived and raised his family.

He is survived by his three daughters; two sons-in-law, Harold Stephens and Robert Thompson; five granddaughters; one sister, Mrs. Arvie Baird of Colton, Calif.; one brother-in-law, John Dorr of Comanche, Okla.; two sisters-in-law, Florence and Stella Hickman; also many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jesse and Lewis; and one sister, Mrs. Belle Rodgers.

Hickman Rites Held At Berea Church

Mrs. Quincy Hickman [Marie Ann Dorr], a resident of the community southwest of Bedford, died at her home Friday, Dec. 13.  The funeral services were held at the Berea church on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 15, conducted by B. F. Stivers of Kansas City.  Burial was in the Berea cemetery.

Mrs. Hickman is survived by her husband and three daughters.  Also by one brother, John Dorr of Oklahoma.

Funeral services for Mrs. Robert L. (Madelene) Irvin were held Wednesday at 2 p. m. at the east Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, conducted by Carl Cummings.  Mrs. Irvin died August 24 at Clarinda Municipal Hospital.  Interment was at Platteville Cemetery.

Mrs. Irvin is survived by her husband and four daughters.

Madelene Irvin Rites August 28

Funeral services for Mrs. Robert L. (Madelene) Irvin, 49, lifetime Taylor County resident, were held August 28 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, conducted by Carl Cummings.  Mrs. Irvin died August 24 at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital.  Interment was at Platteville Cemetery, Taylor County.

Madelene Fluke, daughter of M. [eredith] K. [ay] and Iowa [Julia] Russell Fluke, was born in Jackson Township, Taylor County, Iowa, April 27, 1919.

She attended Liberty school in Jackson Township and graduated from the Bedford High School with the class of 1936.

On February 5, 1941, she was united in marriage to Robert L. Irvin at the Methodist Parsonage in Maryville, Missouri.  To them four daughters were born to bless their home and to share their love.

Preceding her in death were her mother, Iowa [Julia} Russell Fluke, and a stepmother, Norma Fluke.

Left to cherish memories of her good life are her husband, Robert; daughter, Kathryn Joyce of Bedford, Barbara Ann Alberts and her husband Mark of Des Moines, Iowa, Judith Carol and Patricia Diane of Des Moines, her father, M. [eredith] K. [ay] Fluke of Bedford, a brother, Elmer Fluke and his wife Georgia, of Blockton, a step-sister, Ruth Young, and her family of Sheridan, Mo.; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was a member of the Methodist Church and the West Gay Club.

She loved and enjoyed her family and her home and her many friends and neighbors and she will be missed by all who knew her.

Graveside services for Mrs. Jacqueline Hillard Wiley, 51, of Chicago, were held Tuesday, Aug. 27 at Bedford Cemetery, Bedford.  Mrs. Wiley died unexpectedly Aug. 23 at her home in Chicago.

Mrs. Wiley was the daughter of Mrs. Agnes Hillard and a niece of Mrs. Marguerite Robinson, both of Bedford.

Funeral services for Dr. Ivan H. [arold] Stone, 70, of Shenandoah were held July 8 at the Shenandoah Christian Church.  Dr. Stone died July 5 in a hospital in Lincoln, Nebr.  Interment was in the Shenandoah Cemetery.

Dr. Ivan H. [arold] Stone, 70, son of Marion and Nina Belle [Johnson] Stone, was born at Monmouth, Ill., June 19, 1899.

When he was a small child, the family moved to Missouri.  At the age of 15 years he moved with his family to Bedford.  He was graduated from the Palmer School of Chiropractic at Davenport, Ia. in 1929 and opened his first practice at Carson, Ia.  In 1939 he moved to Shenandoah where he continued his practice until his recent illness. During the Second World War he served in the U. S. Navy.

On July 2, 1949, he was united in marriage with Corrine Duncan.  To this union was born one daughter.

Dr. Stone was a member of the Tri-Centum Lodge No. 300.  He was a member of the First Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his father and an infant brother.

Survivors are his wife; his daughter, Mary Lou; a step-daughter, Mrs. Larry (Linda) Pike of Longmont, Colo.; his mother, a sister, Mrs. Marie [Bell] Park and a brother, Dr. Earl J. [ennings] Stone, all of Bedford; a second brother, Virgil J. Stone of Spokane, Wash.; three grandchildren; nephews and nieces.

Dr. Ivan H. [arold] Stone, 70, son of Mrs. Nina Stone of Bedford, died July 5 in a hospital in Lincoln, Nebr.  Funeral services were held Tuesday July 8 at Shenandoah Christian Church with interment in Shenandoah Cemetery.

W. M. Stone Succumbed Thursday

W. [oodford] M. [arion] Stone, a long-time resident of Bedford and community, died at St. Francis hospital, Thursday, February 7, where he was taken just a week previous to his death.

Funeral services were held at the Christian church Sunday afternoon, Rev. Carl Stiefel of the Methodist church officiating.  Burial in Fairview cemetery.

Woodford Marion Stone, son of Woodford and Susan C. [atherine Clifton] Stone, was born in Monmouth, Ill., May 3, 1867 and died at the age of 89 years, nine months, four days.

On February 6, 1896 he was married to Nina B. [elle] Johnson and they celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary the day before his death.

The Stones were the parents of five children:  Dr. Earl J. [ennings] Stone of Bedford, Dr. Ivan H. [arold] Stone of Shenandoah, Virgil H. Stone of Opportunity, Washington, Mrs. Marie B. [ell] Park of Bedford and  [Francis Marion who died in] infancy.

Surviving with the wife and four children are six grandchildren, Mrs. Norma (Hubert) Hensley, Mrs. Mary Ellen (Gene) Norton, Harold Park, Marvin Park, Miss Ruth Stone, Miss Mary Lou Stone; three great grandchildren:  Jeffrey, Jennifer and Julia Kay Hensley.

Mr. Stone joined the Christian church in Bedford in 1915.  He was a former member of the Masonic lodge.  Together with his wife, he owned a farm four miles southwest of Bedford and they moved from their farm to Bedford in 1947.

Last Rites Held June 25 For Francis Trumbo, 68

Funeral services for James Francis Trumbo, 68, of Bedford, were held June 25 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, conducted by Carl Cummings.  Mr. Trumbo died June 23, 1977 in St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, Mo.  Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

James Francis Trumbo was born at Hiawatha, Kansas, May 5, 1909.  He came to Taylor County, Iowa at a very early age and was taken into the home of Claude and Ruby Trumbo, where he blessed their home as a son and was worthy of their mutual love.

He grew to maturity in the Bedford area where he attended the Forest Grove Church.  He was graduated from Bedford High School.

On July 20, 1929, he was united in marriage to Blanche Wolverton and they lived in Jackson Township, where they were engaged in farming until they moved to Bedford in 1960.  He was employed by Van Reenen Feed Store and for the past 13 years by the City of Bedford Water Department.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John and Steve.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Blanche; daughter, Geri, and her husband Doyle Irwin of Englewood, Colorado; a grandson, Richard; two brothers, Paul Golding of New Market, Iowa, and David Golding of Mississippi and a sister, Esther, who resides in California.

He will long be remembered as a kind and considerate husband, father, friend and neighbor, and he will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Ronald Earl Trumbo

Ronald Earl Trumbo, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred E. [lvin] Trumbo [Cora Staley], was born in Keota, Colorado, on April 28, 1913, and passed away at the home of his parents in Keota on Tuesday, Sept. 8th, at the early age of 12 years, 4 months and 10 days.  He leaves to mourn his early demise, his father, mother, and younger brother; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. [ames] H. Staley [Sarah Bateman] of Grover, Colo., and Mrs. N. [ancy] E. [llen Power] Trumbo of Bedford; and many aunts and uncles, with a number of other kinfolk.

Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon, at 2 oÕclock, from the Baptist church, Rev. Fletcher in charge.  Interment was made in the new cemetery.

The Grim Reaper Calls Mrs. Trumbo

At 7:00 oÕclock Tuesday Morning, Mrs. Mary Trumbo Passed Away

Once more we are called upon to chronicle a very sad affair. These things happen occasionally, and the grim reaper in this case called upon a very good and highly respected woman in the person of Mrs. Walter Trumbo at 7 oÕclock this morning.  Her baby son preceding her at birth about 9 oÕclock last night, Mary, as most all her host of friends called her, had the deep sorrow of this community, and Mr. Trumbo and son, Howard, age about thirteen, and their relatives, all the sympathy that could befall anyone.

Funeral services will be held at the Baptist church on Thursday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. Fletcher, who will return from Des Moines.

Obituary of the Late Mrs. Mary Trumbo

Mary Anne Henderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. N. [athan] A. [ndrew] Henderson [Sarah Annette Jared], was born June 12, 1887.  She was born in Taylor County, Iowa, and Bedford and vicinity has always been her home.  On Dec. 24, 1907, she was united in marriage to Walter R. [aymond] Trumbo, of Bedford.

To this union two sons were born, Howard the eldest son now 12 years old, and the infant son born Dec. 29, 1924, and on Dec. 30, Mother and son departed this life, and have gone to live in the FatherÕs home, there to await the home coming of loved ones, where partings will be no more.  Our sister finished earth work at the age of 37 years, 6 months and 18 days.

In 1908 Mrs. Trumbo accepted Christ as her Saviour and united with the Baptist Church, and when called upon she was always ready for service.

She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge, The Pythian Sisters, and the WomenÕs Relief Corps.

From the home, a most kind and affectionate wife and mother has gone, from the church a beloved sister, and from the lodge room a sister and fellow worker.

She leaves to sorrow and mourn their loss, her husband and son, Howard; her father, N. [athan] A. [ndrew] Henderson of Bedford, and three brothers, Fred [Albert] of Creston, Iowa, [Francis] Elmer of Bedford, and Charles, of Lincoln, Neb.

Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 1, at the Baptist Church, Rev. Fletcher officiating.  Interment was made in Fairview cemetery.

Fred Henderson Dies At Creston

Fred A. [lbert] Henderson, 76, a resident of the Bedford community when young and a retired businessman at Creston, died Sunday, September 21 in Creston.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, September 23 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Creston.  Rt. Rev. Msgr. Vitus Stoll officiated.  Burial was in Calvary cemetery at Creston.

He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nate Henderson [Sarah Annette Jared] of Bedford and is survived by one brother, Charles Henderson of Hot Springs, Arkansas, who with his wife were here for the funeral.  Mr. and Mrs. Bob Marley and Mrs. Elmer Henderson of Bedford also attended the last rites.

He is survived by a daughter and her husband and by one grandson.  His parents preceded him in death; also a sister, Mrs. Mary Trumbo; and a brother, [Francis] Elmer Henderson.  He was in the dry-cleaning and altering business in Creston for many years.

[Francis] Elmer Henderson, 72, died early Monday morning after an illness of several months.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elda [Stickelman] Henderson; one daughter, Mrs. Beatrice Ely of Des Moines; two sons, Francis Henderson of Des Moines; Wilbur Henderson of Red Cloud, Nebr., and their wives.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Shum Funeral Home, conducted by Wilbur G. Travis of the Christian church.  Burial in Fairview cemetery.

Final Rites Held In Denver for Mrs. Carl Trumbo

Funeral services for Mrs. Carl (Helen Bothel) Trumbo, long time resident of Denver, Colo., were held March 25 in the Moore Mortuary in Denver.  Interment was at Crown Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Trumbo was born at Bedford on Sept. 29, 1895 and was married to Carl F.[rancis] Trumbo in 1917 in Bedford.

She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, and was active in the churchÕs Women Circle.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Patricia Skidmore, son-in-law and five grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Maude Clayborn and Mrs. Amy Burch of Denver; one brother, Guy Bothel of Eaton, Colo.

Harry Trumbo

Harry Trumbo died at his home in Greenview, Ill., Friday, Dec. 6, 1918, death resulting from the influenza.  He was a son of C. [harles] A. [dams] Trumbo and a half brother of Will and George [Andrew] Trumbo of near Bedford.  He was known here, having visited here several times.  Mr. Trumbo was about 28 years old and leaves a wife and two children.  Burial took place at Greenview.

Mrs. Thomas L. Trumbo

Emma Florence Curry, daughter of William [A.] and Dolly [Dorothy Ann Wilcox] Curry, was born in Menard County, Ill., May 25th, 1862, and in Sept., 1884, she was married to Thomas L. Trumbo.  Six children were born to them, all of which are living:  Clay, Walter, Miss Pearl, Mrs. Ruby Trumbo Snyder, all of Bedford, and Paul and Carl, both of Denver, Colo.  Some six years after she was married, the family moved to Iowa, and for more than twenty-four years she has lived in Bedford and vicinity.  In early womanhood Mrs. Trumbo became a Christian and united with the Antioch Baptist church near Greenview, Ill.  After moving to Iowa she transferred her membership to the First Baptist Church of Bedford.  Mrs. Trumbo was one of those Christians who could always give a reason for the hope she had in her Blessed Saviour, and also knew why she was a Baptist.  Our sister was especially domestic, and was first, last and always a Mother.  Some five years ago her companion in life passed away and she has been in very poor health ever since, being a great sufferer until on September 9th, 1926, she passed to her reward, at the age of 64 years, 3 months and 15 days.  She is survived by one brother, Geo. M. Curry, and the six children.

Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at 2:30, from the Baptist church, with Rev. C. W. Fletcher in charge.  Interment was in Fairview cemetery.

Mrs. Claude Trumbo Dies Unexpectedly

Mrs. Claude Trumbo, a resident of Bedford and Taylor County all of her life, died at her home in Bedford, Friday, Feb. 26, following an illness of a few hours.

Funeral services were held at the Wetmore funeral Home Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Fred H. Cowles.  Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

Ruby Dell McCormick, daughter of Elisha and Susan Jane [Cummings] McCormick, was born in Ross Township, August 7, 1885, and died at the age of 68 years, six months, 19 days.

On Feb. 20, 1907, she was married to Alva Claude Trumbo.

Although they had no children of their own, they took Francis Golding and raised him as their own child.

Mr. and Mrs. Trumbo made their home in Jackson Township 37 years, and moved into Bedford in 1941.  While they lived on the farm they attended the Forest Grove Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband; her foster-son, Francis Trumbo; one granddaughter, Mrs. Doyle Irwin [Geri]; one great grandson, Richard Lee Irwin.  Also by two brothers, Ed and Fred McCormick of Bedford; one sister, Mrs. Addie Montgomery of Pickering, Mo.

Patricia Ann (Trumbo) Blair

Funeral services were held Monday, May 15th at Crown Hill Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.

Patricia Ann (Trumbo) Blair, daughter of the late Carl and Helen [Bothel] Trumbo of Bedford, Iowa was born in Denver, Colorado on September 29, 1935 and passed away May 6, 1995. 

Survivors include her husband, Harvey Blair; children Dorothy Haidsiak, David Blair, Richard Blair, Bill Blair and Bob Blair; grandchildren Brandy, Shannon, Janette, Miranda, Nicholas and Crystal Haidsiak; Jeremy and Cody Blair, Chris and Anthony Fong.

She will be missed dearly by her family and a great many of her friends.

Donald J. Longfellow

Donald Jay Longfellow, 72, of Powder Springs, Georgia, died Sunday, June 11, 1995.

Services were held Tuesday, June 13, at the Bellamy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mike Woods officiating.  Burial was in the Hopkins City Cemetery, June 14, 1995, in Hopkins, Missouri with local arrangements by Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home of Bedford, Iowa.

Mr. Longfellow retired from FAA in 1981 and was a World War II Army veteran.  He was a member of First Baptist Church and Capital Masonic Lodge in Jackson, Mississippi.

Survivors include four daughters, Joyce Slate of Bedford, Texas; Kathy Vickers of Brandson, Miss.; Carol Novack of Lakeland, Fla.; and Kay Spain of Collierville, Tenn.; son, Jay Longfellow of Powder Springs; sister, Jean Frances Stewart of Carrollton, Mo.; step-mother, Aileen Longfellow of Bedford, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Jean Frances Stewart, age 77, of Carrollton, Missouri, died Sunday June 9, 1996 at the East Hill Health Center in Carrollton.

She was born September 14, 1918, near Bedford, Iowa, the daughter of Frank Tennyson and Eula May Hunter Longfellow.

She attended Taylor County Grade School and graduated from Bedford High School in 1935.  She also attended Clarinda Junior College in Clarinda, Iowa, and Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in Maryville, Missouri.

She taught school for a time in several different rural schools in Iowa and also worked at the Taylor County Telephone Company.  After receiving a state license for practical nursing in 1955, she worked in several nursing homes and at Bishop Clarkson Memorial Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.

She was a member of the Christian Church.

On December 5, 1942, she was married to Stuart B. [rainard] Melvin in Maryville, Missouri.  He preceded her in death on June 29, 1969.  On October 23, 1971 she was married to Merle A. Stewart.  They lived in the Bosworth area and Bedford, Iowa before moving to Carrollton in 1992, where he survives at the home.

Other survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Mary Stewart, of Bosworth; a sister-in-law, Mildred Barker, Lenox, Iowa; her stepmother, Aileen Longfellow, Bedford, Iowa; two granddaughters, Jennifer and Tammy, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister, Perthena Ann, and a brother, Donald Jay Longfellow.

Graveside services were held at 1:30 p. m., Wednesday, June 12, 1996 at the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford, Iowa.

The family suggests contributions to the Home Health at Carroll County Memorial Hospital in Carrollton in memory of Mrs. Stewart.  They may be e-mailed to or left at the Gibson-Rice Funeral Home in Carrollton.

Graveside Services For William Woods Held June 26

Graveside services for William Fredrick Woods, 75, of St. Joseph, Missouri, formerly of Athelstan, were held June 26 at the Athelstan, (Ia.) Cemetery and conducted by Rev. Ward Campbell of Mt. Ayr.  Mr. Woods died at his home in St. Joseph, Missouri June 22, 1981.

Son of David Woods and Cora Downing Woods, William Fredrick Woods was born May 17, 1906 in Athelstan, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, a daughter, one sister and three brothers.

He is survived by three children:  one son, Billy Dean Woods of Diagonal, Iowa, two daughters, Mrs. Phyllis Hartman of Lawrence, Kansas, Mrs. Charlotte Fleetwood of Gravity, Iowa; ten grandchildren; one brother, Floyd Woods of Ackworth, Iowa; two sisters:  Mrs. Letha Schuster of Blockton, Iowa and Mrs. Mary Howard of Phoenix, Arizona; nieces, nephews; relatives and friends.

Richard Pierce Rites Nov. 25

Funeral services for Richard H. Pierce, 34, of Des Moines, were held November 25 at Creston.  Mr. Pierce died November 22 at Veterans Hospital in Des Moines.  Interment was at Creston.

He was the oldest son of Hal and Treva Pierce of Clearfield.

His survivors include his wife, Virginia, Des Moines; parents; one sister, Joan Nauman, at home; two brothers, Gary, Des Moines and Mickey, Clearfield; two grandmothers, Mrs. Mable Boltinghouse, Lenox and Mrs. Budd Chamberlin of Bedford.
