We received word this morning of the death of Mr. Enoch [Richard] Campbell, which occurred at his home a mile and a half north of Athelstan, at 8 o'clock this morning.  Mr. Campbell has been a sufferer for some little time with inflammation of the stomach and his condition was considered critical for a few days only.  He was 73 years of age and was a resident of this county since 1869, and his friends are numerous.  Throughout the county he was known and held in the highest esteem by all.

His wife [Sarah Ann "Sally" Sharp] died last summer.  He leaves six children to mourn his death; they are Frank and Robert, Mrs. Amos Ford [Emma], Mrs. Frank Maxfield [Catharine Florence] and Mrs. Frank Adams [Mattie], all of Blockton, and Mrs. Robt. Obituary

Enoch [Richard] Campbell was born in Washington County, Ohio, April 13, 1833, and died at the home of his son near Athelstan, Iowa, December 12, 1907, as stated in these columns last week.  On June 7, 1855, the deceased was united in marriage to Miss Sallie [Sarah Ann] Sharp, in Shelby County, Ind., and to this union thirteen children were born, six of whom, together with the beloved wife, have preceded him to that Great Unknown.  At the outbreak of the Civil War Mr. Campbell enlisted in the 21st Ind. Vol. Inf. and served through the war.  He was one of the brave men of those times who considered his country's safety paramount to all else and for that belief of what he thought was right he was willing to risk life, happiness and home.

Soon after the close of that terrible strife Mr. Campbell and family moved to Iowa, settling in Jefferson Township in 1874.  He was an energetic farmer and soon accumulated considerable property in that township.  Among his neighbors he was known as a man whose word was as good as a note and whose honor and integrity were never called into question.

These same good qualities have been transmitted to the large family now grown to manhood and womanhood.  Mr. Campbell became a Christian and united with the Mt. Zion Baptist church, to which he has been a consistent follower.  He was a member of the Masonic order and that body had charge of the burial, which occurred at Platteville on Friday last, the remains being laid beside his companion who died June 11 of this year.  The funeral was preached at Mt. Zion church by Rev. A. I. Jones, of Bedford.

The children left to mourn are as follows:  Frank, Robert and Miles, Mrs. Amos Ford [Emma], Mrs. Frank Maxfield [Catharine Florence] and Mrs. Frank Adams [Mattie], all of Jefferson township and Mrs. Robt. Graham [Marietta], of Sheridan, Mo.  To these surviving relatives the sympathy of all is extended.

An Old Settler Gone
Enoch Campbell, one of the old settlers of Taylor county, died at the home of his son, Frank Campbell, near Athelstan, this morning at 8 o'clock. Mr. Campbell has not been in good health for some months. His wife died on June 11th last, and the sorrow and grief which came to him by the loss of his companion brought on physical ailments from which he never recovered. For some months, however, he was up and around, but in September his condition became such that he was compelled to take his bed, from which he never arose. For some time, he has realized that his days on earth were numbered and he had arranged his business affairs with the knowledge that the inevitable end was soon to come. In October he held a public sale and disposed of his personal property, closed his house and was taken to the home of his son Frank, where he remained until his death.
Deceased was born in Ohio in 1833 and 13 years later moved with his parents to Indiana. He was living in that state when the war broke out and in 1861 enlisted in the 21st Indiana infantry. He served only 18 months when he was discharged on account of physical disabilities; but while he was in the service, he was a faithful, efficient soldier and on account of merit was promoted to the position of commissary sergeant.
In 1855 deceased was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Sharp and to this union was born seven children, all but one of whom survive him. With his wife and family Mr. Campbell moved to Taylor county in 1875 and settled on a farm where Athelstan now is and in that neighborhood he spent the balance of his life. He was a member of the Baptist church and a conscientious Christian. A man of highest character, just in every transaction, kind, accommodating and generous hearted, he was admired and respected by all and his death has caused sincere sorrow to many hearts.
For many years Mr. Campbell has been a member of the Masonic lodge and that organization will probably have charge of the obsequies.
The funeral services will be held at Mt. Zion church tomorrow, Friday, at 11 a. m. Interment at Platteville cemetery.
