[Arthur Garrett Thompson]

Final Rites Held September 3 For Arthur Thompson

Funeral services for Arthur G. [arrett] Thompson, a life time Taylor county resident, held September 5, 1968 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, were conducted by [?} Berne.  Mr. Thompson died at his home in Bedford September 3.  Interment was at Bedford Cemetery, Bedford.

Arthur Garrett, son of Ira Graff and Iowa Alice [Warder] Thompson was born May 15, 1884, in Taylor County near Gravity, Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Zetta Keith on Feb. 15, 1911, at Bedford.  To this union three children were born.  They are Alice (Mrs. Karl Cobb), Allen J. [oseph] Thompson, both of Bedford and Robert Keith Thompson of Conway.  Zetta passed away at their home south of Bedford on Jan. 1, 1942.

He became a member of the Berea Church of Christ when a young man and was a faithful member until his death.

On Sept. 11, 1943, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Alta [Weatherly] Miller and they made their home on a farm northwest of Bedford until 1961 when they moved to their present home in Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother; four brothers, Elmer, Lester, Troy, and Walter; two sisters, Effie (Mrs. Bert Taylor), and Bertha (Mrs. Blaine Ratliff).

In the surviving family are his wife, Alta and children:  Mr. and Mrs. Karl Cobb [Alice], Mr. and Mrs. Allen Thompson [Hazel Stephens], Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thompson [Ruth Hickman]; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Flossie Newkirk; two sisters-in-law; many nieces, nephews; also several step-nieces and nephews.

Eugene Bailie, 59

Rites Tuesday

Funeral services for Eugene Bailie [son of Louis Bailie], 59, who lived north of New Market, were held Tues., Dec. 29 at Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda.  Mr. Bailie died Sunday, December 2, at Clarinda Municipal Hospital.  Interment was at Memory Cemetery, New Market.

Survivors include his wife, Lenore; four children, Richard of Ft. Dodge, Marilyn of West Des Moines, Judy of Omaha and Janet of Peru, Nebr.; a brother, Bill Bailie of Bedford; a nephew, Steve Bailie of Great Falls, Montana.

Gilbert Henry, 51, Final Rites are Held April 24

Funeral services for Gilbert Charles Henry, 51, of Denver, a native of Bedford, were held April 24 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Carl Cummings officiating.  Mr. Henry died April 20, 1971 near Denver, Colo.  Military honors were given by Bedford American Legion Post No. 164 with interment at Forest Grove Cemetery.

Gilbert Charles Henry, son of Beryl and Violet Campbell Henry, was born near Bedford, Iowa, September 27, 1919.

Soon after he graduated from the Bedford High School he joined the Armed Forces of his country; serving in Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines, and later stationed in Germany.  Returning to the states he was stationed for various periods of times at Fort Dix, N.J., Washington, D.C., where he was in the adjutant general's office located in the Pentagon; then at Ft. Meade, Md., and Fort Bliss, Texas, where he retired from the Armed Forces as a first lieutenant in the infantry.

Following his retirement from the service, he has been associated with the National Park Service for the past 12 years and was stationed at the Dinosaur National Monument, near Denver, Colo., at the time of his passing away, due to a heart attack.

He was preceded in death by his father, Beryl Henry.

Left to cherish memories are his wife, Mearl Enola Hunt Henry; a daughter, Carole Henry Pasach; two sons Burl and Patrick; two grandchildren; his mother, Violet; two sisters, Virginia Perkins and Margaret King; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

He was baptized in the Catholic Church while residing in Omaha, Nebr.

Gilbert was a kind and loving husband, father, brother, and friend and he will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Last Rites Held Tuesday for Bill Bailie, 63

William W. (Bill) Bailie, a longtime businessman and operator of Bailie's Repair Shop here, died Sunday in Municipal Hospital, Clarinda, after an illness of several months.  He was 63 years of age.

Mr. Bailie was born in Taylor County, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis L. Bailie [Maude Weir], both of whom preceded him in death.  He attended the Bedford Baptist Church was a member of the American Legion by virtue of military service from 1942 to 1946.  A major part of which was spent overseas.

Mr. Bailie was an avid outdoor sportsman and was active in the Wildlife Conservation Club and the Bedford Gun Club.  He participated in local government, serving on the city council and water board.

Last Rites Held Tuesday for Bill Bailie, 63

Surviving are his widow Dorothy [Smalley] and one son, Dennis Stephen, and his wife and son, Linda and Aaron William of Omaha. His first wife, Anna Belle [Nelson] preceded him in death.

Rites were Tuesday at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home conducted by Carl Cummings and Rev. Ollie Odle. Military honors were presented at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Final Rites at Arlington for Maj. Gen. Hoover

Major General Hubert D. [on] Hoover, Washington, D.C., died on April 9 at Silver Springs, Md.  Interment, with full military honors, was held in Arlington National Cemetery.

Major General Hoover, the youngest son of Oswald (Os) and Ketura Hardenbrook Hoover, was born near Bedford [in Jackson Township] Oct. 15, 1887.  The family moved to California where he graduated from the University of California Law School.  He made a career of the army, working in the Judge Advocate Division in Washington, D.C.

He is survived by his widow [Gertrude Haverstick] and two sons.  He was a first cousin of Mrs. Roy Meikle [Madge Bailie] [daughter of Nancy Hoover Bailie], Maryville and the late Mrs. Persus Wier, and a second cousin of Miss Minnie Hoover, Bedford.

October 22 Rites Held Here for Alma McCormick

Funeral services for Mrs. Edgar (Alma May) McCormick, 93, of Bedford, were held October 22, at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Rev. Robert Truitt officiating.  Mrs. McCormick died October 18, 1972 in Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Ia.  Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Daughter of Matthew and Zoa Orton, Alma May McCormick was born July 26, 1879, in the farm home in Benton Township near Bedford, Iowa.  Here she grew to womanhood.  As a young girl she was united with the Gilead Methodist church and participated faithfully in all the church activities.

She was united in marriage to Edgar Dean McCormick on March 16, 1904.  They lived on a farm southeast of Bedford.  To this union one daughter was born, Zoa Rita.

Part of Alma's life was spent on the farm where she was a good neighbor and friend, and always willing to help where there was a need.  She remained on the farm for some years following the death of her husband. In 1940 she decided to move to Bedford and here she enjoyed her flowers and garden, which she loved to share with her neighbors and friends.

With failing health she moved in with her daughter and husband and stayed until 1970.  She lived with her youngest granddaughter, Lois, and family for half a year in Council Bluffs but longing to return to neighbors and friends she returned to Bedford and entered the Thogmartin Nursing Home.

Preceding her in death were her parents, a baby brother, her husband Dean, and son-in-law, Laurel Stithem.

She is survived and missed by her daughter Zoa Rita Stithem; four grandchildren, Doris Christensen and husband, Harold; Eldon Stithem and wife, Darlene; Lois Minnick and husband, Bill; Robert Stithem and wife, Nelda; 11 great grandchildren and one great great grandson.

She will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.

Doyle Thompson Dies in Calif.  Rites Held Tues.

[Forest] Doyle Thompson, 59, of Mountain View, California, formerly of Bedford, died November 24 at his home in Mountain View.  Services were held Tuesday at Hayward, California with interment in Hayward.

Mrs. Cleo Thomas and Paul Thompson, sister and brother, flew to California Monday to attend the services.

Last Rites Held March 20 for Mrs. Roy Meikle

Funeral services for Mrs. Roy (Mary Madge) Meikle. 88, of Maryville, Mo., long time Bedford resident, were held Tuesday, March 20 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, Bedford, with Rev. C. Ray McCain officiating.  Mrs. Meikle died March 16, 1973, at Park Dale Manor in Maryville, Mo.  Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Among Mrs. Meikle's survivors are two daughters, Marjorie and her husband, Homer Jensen, of Maryville, Mo., and Ruth, and her husband Mort [on]  Koser, of North Liberty, Ia.; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
