Death of Grandma King

Mrs. Catherine A. Snyder King, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Snyder was born April 28, 1820 in Bucks county, Penn., forty miles north of Philadelphia. She was the oldest of ten children thus bearing a large part of the family cares. In 1834 the father took his family to Wayne county, O., settling seven miles from Wooster, the county seat. The county was new and heavily lumbered so that the deceased spent her youthful days among the hardships incident to early pioneer life, being thus deprived of most advantages now possible in thickly settled communities.

On Oct. 13, 1853, Catherine. A. Snyder, the deceased, was married to John King. The married couple had their home on a farm near Lafayette, Medina county, O., where they lived until 1861, when they moved to Taylor county 10 miles [east] of Bedford, the county seat. Here they have lived since that time. Coming here at this early date she again had to endure the hardships of the settlement of a new country. The King home was a grand stopping place for the many weary travelers seeking location in the west. Mrs. King's illness was a protracted and severe one, causing exceptionally great suffering, all of which she endured with patience and true Christian fortitude.

For many years Mrs. King has been a member of the M. E. Church ever taking an active part in the duties pertaining to the advancement of Christ's Kingdom. She died in the triumph of a Christian faith, and is now participating in the awards unto the righteous. She passed over to eternity on Thursday, Feb. 28, at the age of 86 years and 10 months. ,

She leaves her husband John King, now 84 years old; her son, C. S. King and family, her daughter, Mrs. Alice Ewart and family, her grand daughter Mrs. Jess Jenkins and family and other near relatives and hosts of devoted friends to mourn her loss, among all of whom her memory will ever be precious and blessed. Rev. G. W. Snyder, pastor of the English Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs is a brother of the deceased and was present at the funeral which was held from the Platteville M. E. Church Saturday, March 2, and was conducted by Rev. Alfred Knoll of Blockton.

Mrs. Catherine King died at her home in Gay Township Thursday and was buried at Platteville Saturday. It will be remembered that Mrs. King or Grandma as she was called by everyone as she was very aged, fell some weeks ago and broke her hip. No hopes was held of her recovery from the very first and her sufferings were terrible so her death was felt to be a relief.
