Creston Woman Buried At Athelstan

Mrs. Floy Ray of Creston, who was injured in an automobile accident near Platteville on May 29, died Friday at the Municipal Hospital in Clarinda, where     she was taken immediately following the accident.

The funeral services were held in Athelstan Monday afternoon and burial was made there.

Obituary – Mrs. Floy Ray

Floy [Mae] Rusco, daughter of Charles and Mary Rusco, was born in Jefferson Township, Taylor County, Iowa, August 29, 1895, and died June 18, 1948, at the age of 52 years, 9 months and 20 days.

She was married to Jay Older in 1910. To them one child was born Kenneth Older of Honolulu, Hawaii. Her father, mother, two sisters and four brothers preceded her in death.

In March 1925 she married Forrest Ray of Lenox.

She leaves her son, two grandchildren, two sisters and three brothers.

The funeral services were held at the Community church in Athelstan, Monday, June 21, conducted by Rev. Lawrence Day of Maryville. Burial was in the Athelstan cemetery.

Joyce Scott Rockafellow

Joyce Scott Rockafellow was born March 6, 1917 in Athelstan, IA and departed this life March 23,1999 in Clearfield, IA at the Clearview Nursing Home.

She was the daughter of Harley and Chloe (Lantz) Scott. She attended Athelstan school for 12 years. On June 7, 1933 she was united in marriage to Raymond Weaver. To this union four children were born: Mabel Fem, Donald Dean, Laverna Joyce and Mary Ann also in the family were three stepchildren: Marie, Duane and Thelma.

After moving to Iowa City, she worked at the University of Iowa Hospital and later earned her licensed practical nursing degree. Continuing with her nursing career she moved and worked in Des Moines at General Hospital for over 20 years. Due to her age and failing health she retired from the nursing profession.

During her lifetime she enjoyed bowling on leagues, dancing, cooking (especially her divinity), quilting and traveling. She enjoyed entering many of her quilts and baked goods at the Iowa State Fair where she received many ribbons and prizes.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Lowell, two brothers, Howard and Herschel Scott; two sisters, Genese Branson and Berneice Graham; two sisters in law, Mildred and Lela Scott; two brothers in law, Clyde Branson and Kenneth Graham; one grandchild, Lizzie Weidler.

Joyce is survived by her children and families: Marie Campbell and Paul of Blockton, IA; Duane Weaver and Virginia of Sharpsburg, IA; Thelma Johnson of Blair, NE; Fern Leight and Don of West Point, IA; Donald Weaver and Mary of Blockton, IA; Joyce Weidler and Delbert of Iowa City, IA; and Mary Hildreth of Des Moines, IA; 18 grandchildren; numerous great and great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Joyce held a high regard for her duty and responsibility in her work and in her life. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Anna Rusco, 81 Rites July 20 In Athelstan

Funeral services for Anna Rusco, 81, of Athelstan, held July 20 at the Athelstan Community Church, were conducted by Rev. G. W. Swan. Mrs. Rusco died July 16, 1972 in Bedford following a period of declining health. Interment was   at Athelstan Cemetery, Athelstan.

Anna, daughter of James W.  [illiam] McCann and Sarah Omstott [Onstot] McCann, was born in [De] Witt, Iowa, November 8, 1890.

She was united in marriage to Albert J. [ames] Rusco, at Athelstan, Iowa, in 1909. To this union six children were born: four sons and two daughters.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Albert, an infant son, Arthur, half brother, James W. McCann.

She made a confession of faith, and was baptized in the Platte River in early life and became a member of the Sheridan Christian Church. She was faithful to her Savior until ill health intervened and she was forced to remain home.

Those surviving her are: sons: Forrest [Albert] of Blockton, Floyd [Lowen] of Riverside, Calif., Doyle of San Luis Obispo, California, daughters: Helen Sickles of Stockton, Calif., and Freda Green of Athelstan; brother, Lee McCann of Afton, Iowa; sister, Jennie Rusco of Athelstan; three half-sisters: Velma Hanger of Des Moines, Iowa, Minnie Wessels and Cassie Bach of Chula Vista, Calif.; half brother, Wesley McCann of Urbana, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild, a host of other relatives and neighbors.

BERNADINE MARIE RUSCO

Memorial services for Bernadine Rusco, age 85 of Bedford, who died Thursday, February 6, 2003 were held Sunday, February 9, 2003 at 6:00 p.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home with Father Dan Siepker officiating. Burial of the ashes will be held in the Athelstan Cemetery. Memorials can be given in Bea's name. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

Bernadine Marie Rusco was born November 5, 1917, in Adams County, Iowa the daughter of Michael E. Barry and Julia E. McConkey Barry. At the age of six months Bea, along with her parents and brother Johnny and sister Helen, moved to Massena, Iowa where she lived for twenty years. In 1937, Bea graduated from Massena High School. After graduation, Bea moved to Des Moines where she lived for about two years. She returned to Corning to work and this is where she met Royal Paul Rusco. They were married in 1940 and in 1941 their son, Jimmy Joe was born.

The family moved to Lenox in 1948 where Bea and Royal both worked for the telephone company. Later Royal went to work for the Lenox Community School. They moved to California for a short time, returning to Iowa to live in Bedford. In 1990, Royal passed away and in 1992, Bea moved back to Lenox.

Bea was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Bea also enjoyed fishing, sewing and embroidery work. She loved playing cards and spending time with her family. In her later years, Bea was active in the churchwomen's guild. She also enjoyed traveling, having visited New York with her sister and niece.

Left to cherish Bea’s memory are her son, Jimmy Joe, and a granddaughter, Deidre K. Rusco, both of Bedford; a sister, Helen Mack of Des Moines; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Bea in death are her parents, Michael and Julia; her husband Royal and a brother Johnny.

The funeral for Jennie Rusco was held Saturday, January 31st at 1:00 p.m. at the Novinger Taylor Funeral Home in Bedford. Jennie was 100 years and two months old. I could be wrong but it seems to me she is the only centenarian that Blockton can claim. The service was conducted by Scott Marcum. He was a frequent visitor of Jennie and did such a beautiful job. The burial was in the family plot in the Athelstan Cemetery. There was a luncheon at the Blockton Community Building following the gravesite rites where a lovely bountiful luncheon was spread. Due to the promise of more bad weather they did not linger too long.

Relatives from a distance were a nephew, Jack Rusco of rural Glenwood; his sisters, Mildred and Peggy of Jameson, MO. Jess Rusco has four daughters still alive, they all came, there was Lorene Brown and son Kenneth of Joplin; Viola Carder; Ruby Berde and Evelyn Hert all from the Miami Oklahoma area. Brice Rusco, great grandson and friend Tracey of Scott City, MO; from the Kansas City area granddaughters, Pat Rusco and Marilyn and Russel Donoho; great grandsons Jeff and Gray, Mitchell and Patty Gray and Mitchell and Jennifer.

Jennie Rusco

Jennie Rusco died January 28, 1998 at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr, Iowa at the age of 100 years and two months.

Jennie, daughter of James William and Sadie Onstat McCann was born November 28, 1897 near Isadora, Missouri.

She married Thomas [Jefferson] Rusco on February 16, 1916. To this union their son, Leonard Rusco was born.

Following Thomas' death she married Joe Turner Rusco on April 15, 1925.

Jennie spent most of her life in Athelstan, Iowa. She loved to spend time with family and friends.

Fishing and flowers were her passion. In later years she took jobs caring for elderly. The past seven years she has been a resident of Clearview Nursing Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa.

She is survived by two granddaughters, Marilyn Donohoe and Patricia Rusco of Kansas City; five great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She is preceded in death by her husbands Thomas Rusco and Joe Rusco; her son Leonard Rusco; her grandson Lowell Rusco; her great grandson Ronald Jackson; her brothers Lee McCann and Henry McCann; her sisters, Eleanor McCann and Anna Rusco; her half brothers, William McCann and Wesley McCann; and her half sisters, Velma Hanger, Cassie Bach and Minnie Wessels.

Joe Rusco, 68 Dies At Mount Ayr

Joe [Turner] Rusco, 68, of Athelstan died at Ringgold County hospital, Mount Ayr, early Tuesday morning, December 6. He had been a patient at the hospital several days following a heart attack.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Community Church in Athelstan. Burial will be in the Athelstan cemetery.

Joe Rusco Rites At Athelstan

Joe Turner Rusco, son of Charles T. [heodore] and Mary [Catherine Swett] Rusco, was born October 5, 1892 in Jefferson township, Taylor county, Iowa, and passed away Dec. 6, 1960 at Ringgold County hospital at Mount Ayr, at the age of 68 years, two months, one day.

He spent his entire life in Taylor County. He was married to Nada Miller in 1917, and to this union one son was born, Miller Rusco of Kansas City, Mo. He was married to Jennie McConn [McCann] Rusco on April 15, 1925. His mother, father, four sisters, and five brothers preceded him in death.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Jennie of Athelstan; the son, Miller of Kansas City; a step-son, Leonard Rusco of Sheridan; a brother, Charles of Bakersfield, Calif.; five grandchildren, two great grandchildren.

 Funeral services were conducted from the Community Church in Athelstan, Dec. 9, by Rev. L. B. Day of Maryville. Burial in the Athelstan cemetery.

Leonard Rusco, 62 Final Rites Were Held March 22

Funeral services for Leonard Paul Rusco, 62, of Sheridan, Mo., held March 22 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, were conducted by Rev. Allen Tomlinson. Mr. Rusco died March 19, 1980 in his home in Jackson Township, Taylor County, Ia. Interment was at the Athelstan Cemetery, Athelstan, Iowa.

Leonard Paul Rusco was born to Thomas Jefferson Rusco and Jennie McCann Rusco on May 16, 1917 at Athelstan, Iowa.

He grew to maturity in the Athelstan community.  

On August 11, 1938 he was united in marriage to Roberta Maxine Chandler at Clarinda, Iowa. They lived in the Conway and Hopkins communities before settling in the Jackson Township of Taylor County where he was engaged in farming.

To this union three children were born: Marilyn Kay Donohoe, Lowell Edward Rusco, and Patricia May Rusco.

He was preceded in death by his son, Lowell, father, Thomas, and stepfather, Joe Turner Rusco.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Maxine Rusco of the home; daughters Marilyn Donohoe of Kansas City, Mo., and Patricia Rusco of the home; son-in-law, Russell Donohoe of Kansas City, Mo.; grandchildren: Ronald Jackson of the home, Jeffery Gray and Mitchell Gray of Kansas City, Mo., Penny Rusco and Angie Rusco of Falls City, Oregon, and Bryce Rusco of the home; mother Jennie Rusco of Blockton, Iowa; mother-in-law, Viola Chandler, of Athelstan, Ia.; brother-in-law, Victor Chandler, of Athelstan, Iowa; a host of relatives and friends.

Last Rites Held June 20 for Lowell Rusco, 34

Funeral services for Lowell Edward Rusco, 34, of Coin, Iowa, held June 20 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, were conducted by Rev. Hilton Griswold. Mr. Rusco died June 17, 1977 in his home in Coin. Interment was at the Athelstan Cemetery, Athelstan, Iowa.

Lowell Edward Rusco was born in Conway, Iowa August 6, 1942, the son of Leonard and Maxine Rusco.

He was graduated from the Bedford Community Schools in 1960.

Mr. Rusco worked six years at Western Electric in Kansas City, Missouri before coming to work for IAMO Telephone Company where he worked for the last 10 years.

He was proud to be a member of the Coin, Iowa community where he served as a volunteer on the rescue unit and was a member of their volunteer fire department.

His survivors include two daughters, Penny Sue and Angie Lucille Rusco of Clarinda; his parents, Leonard [Paul] and Maxine Rusco [Roberta Maxine Chandler] of Sheridan; two sisters, Marilyn Donohoe of Kansas City and Patricia Rusco of Sheridan; two grandmothers, Jennie Rusco and Viola Chandler, both of Athelstan; an uncle, Victor Chandler, of Athelstan, a brother-in-law, Russell Donohoe, of Kansas City, Mo.; and four nephews; other relatives and many friends.

ROYAL PAUL RUSCO

Services for Royal Paul Rusco, 73, Bedford, were held Tuesday, March 27 at Shum- Novinger Funeral. Burial was at Athelstan Cemetery. Mr. Rusco died March 23, 1990 at Mercy Hospital, Corning, Iowa.

Royal Paul Rusco, son of Turner Joe Rusco and Lelah Benedon [Benedom] Rusco was born at Athelstan, Iowa January 21, 1917. He lived in Taylor County and grew to maturity in Athelstan where he attended school.

On May 3, 1940 he was united in marriage to Bernadine Barry at Kansas City, Mo. and they lived in Corning, Lenox and the Bedford area. He worked most of his life in Taylor County, Iowa.

To this union one child was born, Jimmie Joe Rusco.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Bernadine of the home; his son, Jim; his granddaughter, Deidre; his mother, Lelah Rusco in Fresno, Ca.; his brothers and sisters, Beverly Gould and her husband Eldon, Marjorie Christensen and her husband Tom; Mildred Norton and her husband Robert; Jack Rusco and his wife Nancy; Peggy Jincks and her husband James; his sister-in-law Helen Mack; and his stepmother, Bessie Stitt.

Royal was a member of the American Legion Post Parkinson 250 at Lenox, Iowa.

He was a kind and considerate husband, father, grandfather, son and brother and he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Thomas Rusco

Thomas [Jefferson] Rusco son of Mr. and Mrs. C. [harles] T. [heodore] Rusco, was born in Taylor County, Iowa, December 12, 1897 and died at the hospital in St. Joseph, Mo., January 24, 1918, aged 20 years, 1 month and 12 days.

He was united in marriage to Jennie McCann February 16, 1916. To this union was born one son, Leonard [Paul].

He leaves to mourn his departure, his father and mother and four sisters and six brothers: Mrs. Alice Freemyer, Mrs. Clara Freemyer, Charles Rusco, John Rusco, Jesse Rusco, Albert Rusco, Mrs. Ethel Sickles, Joseph Rusco, Turner Rusco and Mrs. Flossie Older.

The funeral services were conducted from the Baptist church in Athelstan, January 26, 1918, by Challie E. Graham, pastor of the Isadora, Mo. church of Christ, assisted by W. M. Hunt, after which the remains were interred in the Athelstan cemetery.

The bereaved ones have the sympathy of friends in this hour of sorrow. May they look to Him who comforted the troubled in heart when he was here among men and who is the same today, yesterday and forever. There is a tearless land and Jesus leads the way to it.

Turner Rusco Died Wednesday

Turner Rusco, 55, a resident of the Conway community died Wednesday at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston, following an operation on Sunday.

He is survived by his wife, two married children, and four children of the home. He is a former resident of Athelstan.

The body is at the Shum Funeral Home in Bedford.

Obituary - Turner Rusco

Turner Joe Rusco, son of Charles [Theodore] and Mary [Catherine Swett] Rusco, was born in Jefferson township, Taylor county, Iowa, October 5, 1893, and died May 27, 1048, aged 55 years, 1 months, 22 days.

He was married to Lelah Benadom in December 1913. To them two children were born, Marjorie Hays of Fresno, Calif., and Royal [Paul] Rusco of Lenox.

On September 7, 1929, he married Bessie [May] Brown. To them four children were born, Jack, Beverly, Mildred Ann and Peggy, all of the home. 

His mother, father, two sisters and four brothers, preceded him in death.

He leaves to mourn, his wife and six children; two grandchildren, Jerry Hays and Jimmy Rusco; three sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services were held May 29, 1948 at the Community Church in Athelstan, conducted by Rev. Lawrence Day of Maryville.  Burial was in the Athelstan cemetery.
