Blockton News

Thursday    July 23, 1936    p. 8

Emmet [t] Savage, 50 years of age, was killed last Thursday evening on the railroad crossing on highway No. 3 in northeast Bedford. It seems he was riding on the rear end of a car driven by W. L. Whittington and jumped when it appeared certain that a train would strike the Whittington car. He fell in front of the train. The driver of the car claimed the sun blinded him so he did not see the approaching train. This is a dangerous crossing, especially at night. The streetlights are very confusing and it is impossible to tell whether there is a train coming from either direction without stopping, and no one stops.

Savage Was Killed By Train Thurs.

Jumps From Truck To Tracks

Emmett Savage, 43, of Bedford, was instantly killed Thursday by the evening passenger train at the first crossing north of the depot.

Savage, farm hand employed by R. L. Whittington, was riding back to town with his employer after the day's work. Also riding with Whittington was Will Underwood, another employee.

As Whittington drove his car toward the crossing he states he was blinded by the evening sun, not seeing or hearing the train as it gained momentum in pulling out of town.

Seated with Whittington, Underwood was the first to see the train. He yelled at Whittington, who pulled the throttle open and the truck shot ahead to just clear the tracks as the train went across.

Savage either fell out the back end of the truck where he was standing, or jumped, thinking there was going to be a crash. He landed prone on the tracks, the wheels running over his body in such a manner that his head and one arm were cut off.

Funeral services for Savage were held Saturday afternoon at the Walker & Shum Funeral Home and burial was made in the Bedford cemetery. Rev. C. Max Buck was in charge of the services and a group of world war veterans assisted as pallbearers and in a simple military service at the graveside.
