Funeral services for Sarah Marston Freeland, 88, were held Feb. 29 at Holiness Church in Athelstan, Iowa with Rev. Ward Campbell officiating. Mrs. Freeland died February 26. Interment was at Athelstan Cemetery, Athelstan, Iowa.

Sarah Marston White, daughter of Robert White and Julia Ann Mathews, was born near Onarga, Ill., Dec. 17, 1875. When she was 11 years old the family moved to Phillips County, Colo., where her parents took a homestead. At the age of 16 years she began her teaching career, and she was a teacher for 14 years, some of the time in remote sod schoolhouses surrounded by a plowed strip to protect against prairie fires. She later taught in the elementary school system of Holyoke, Colo.

In 1905 she and Francis Asbury Freeland were married and came to the farm south of Athelstan, Iowa. This was to be her home from that time on; and she became very attached to her friends, neighbors and church.

Two children, Jean Crane, Ames, Ia., and Arrie Ann Easley, Denver, Colo., were born into this home. Mrs. Freeland gave her heart to the Lord in early girlhood and from that time on she was a consistent and devout Christian. She maintained a Christian home where morning devotions and Bible reading were part of family life.

All of her life Mrs. Freeland was active in some church. When she and her husband first moved to their new home in Missouri they united with the Methodist church in Isadora. Later she worked in the churches in Athelstan. Her ministry was one of loving thoughtfulness expressed in many simple ways.

During the last few years she has spent her winters with her daughters. Her husband and stepson, Ned Freeland, preceded her in death.

She leaves the daughters; a step-daughter, Mrs. Edna Robert, Imperial, Nebr.; a son-in-law, William D. Easley; a sister, Mrs. Bell McFadden, Denver, Colo.; many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends who will miss her deeply.
