Albert
Henry Cordell, 68, entered into
his eternal rest on Saturday, January 29, at Bright Kavanagh House in Des
Moines.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents, Minnie [Bell Shepherd] and Cecil [Troy]; his wife, Gladys; and his son, Terry, brother, Eugene (Slim) Cordell; nephews, Troy Cordell, David Haidsiak and David McNeil. Left to mourn his passing are his daughter, Brenda
Carroll; Brenda's mother, Jo
Carroll; and grandson, Patrick; and Gladys' son, Richard Steenblock all of Des Moines; sisters, Ann Haidsiak and Carol Cordell of Jewell, Kay (Floyd) Bolinger of Diagonal, Elinor (Spencer) Lumbard of Diagonal; brother, Richard Cordell (Dianne); sister-in-law, Bev (Jim) Roberts; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many
good friends.
The
family would like to thank the staff of Bright Kavanagh House for their
compassionate care of Albert and their entire family.
Per
his request, Albert will be
cremated and his remains will be buried in a family plot in Athelstan. Memorial
services will be 2 p.m. on Tuesday, February 1, at First Christian Church in
Creston. Lunch will be served at noon, and all are invited and the family will
greet friends until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to
the family.

Seymour Cordell, the youngest son
of Jerry and Esther Cordell, was born near Athelstan, Taylor county, Iowa, Sept. 2, 1908, and died in the
hospital at Creston, Ia., Nov. 9, 1927, aged 19 years, 2 months and 8 days. He
was ill 29 days. He was a graduate of Maloy High School and was taking his
second year at the Teachers State Normal Course at Cedar Falls when he became
ill. All of the family were present during his sickness except Bessie and Otis. His father and one brother preceded him in death. Besides his
mother he leaves two sisters and four brothers, as follows: Mrs. Jessie
Cavin of Blockton, Ia.; George, and Bessie, of Chan Tung, China; Otis, of Monterey, Calif.; Marion, of Maxwell, Neb.; and Lloyd, of Pittsburg, Calif. Also many other relatives and friends. In 1923
he united with the Christian church in Maloy, Ia., and was baptized during his
sickness. He prayed earnestly and trusted in the Lord.
The
funeral services were held in the Athelstan Baptist church, Nov. 11, 1927,
conducted by Challie E. Graham, after which the remains were laid to rest in
the Athelstan cemetery.

Obituary - Clarence Seymour Cordell, son of Jerry and Esther Cordell, was born near Athelstan, Taylor county, Iowa, Sept. 2, 1908, and died in the hospital at Creston, Iowa, after an illness of 29 days, on Nov. 9, 1927, aged 19 years, 2 months and 8 days.

The music was furnished by the Blockton male quartette composed of H. O. Mumma, Robert Ford, G. C. Dennis and E. K. Wilson. The hymns sang were "Going Down the Valley," "Nearer My God to Thee," and "Shall We Meet." Mrs. Matie Miller presided at the piano. The pall bearers were John, Emmett and Leo Warin, John Link, Garland Raper and Calvin Jenkins. The floral offerings by the Works school, the Maloy High school and the friends, were many and very beautiful.
The sympathy of the many friends goes out to the bereaved ones in this time of their sorrow. May the loving Heavenly Father comfort and bless them Home at last to the tearless, deathless land, where there is no night, but all is love and life and glory forever.

Ellen Dorothy Cordell, of
Athelstan, who was taken to a St. Joseph hospital on Feb. 5. died at the
hospital Sunday night at the age of 29 years. She leaves her husband, Otis
Cordell; son, Forest Robert, and two daughters, Erma Jean and Lois Marie, of Athelstan; mother, Mrs. William Craven, of Windsor, California; three brothers, Frederick
A. Craven, of Tucson, Arizona,
and Franklin R. and William
N. Craven, of Windsor,
California, and one sister, Mrs. Maude A. Brown, of Cazadero, California. The body was brought to
Bedford Monday and the funeral services will be held at Athelstan where
interment will be made.

Funeral services for Mrs.
Otis Cordell, 30, who died at the
Methodist hospital in St. Joseph, Sunday, Feb. 16, were held at the Baptist
church in Athelstan, Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 26, conducted by Rev. W. H.
Warrior.
Burial
was in the Athelstan cemetery.

Dorothy Craven was born Nov. 27,
1905, at Mountain Ranch, Calif.
April
10, 1923, she was married to Otis E. [dward] Cordell in Ukiah, Calif. To them, three children were
born, Irma Jean, age 10, Forrest
Robert, 8, and Lois Marie, 21 months.
They
resided in California until the spring of 1932, when they came to Iowa, and
moved on their farm northwest of Athelstan.
She leaves to mourn her
somewhat sudden death, a loving husband, her three small children, her mother, Mrs.
Bertha Craven; one sister, Mrs.
Elmer Brown of Cazadero, Calif.;
and three brothers, William N. Craven, and Franklin R. Craven, who reside with their mother at Windsor, Calif., and Alfred A. Craven
of Tucson, Arizona.
Her
father preceded her in death on Dec. 15, 1934.
She
was a loving wife and a very devoted mother. She was a member of the Woman's
Auxiliary of the American Legion, at Santa Rosa, Calif. She united with the
Methodist church at Willits, Calif., early in life.
Her
husband was with her constantly during her illness and her mother and sister
the four days.

Mrs.
Esther Cordell, who had been
staying at the home of her son, Otis Cordell, the past three weeks caring for his children
during the illness and after the death of their mother, returned to her home at
Maloy, Friday.
Mrs.
Bertha Craven of Windsor, Calif.,
and Mrs. Elmer Brown of
Cazadero, Calif., who were called here by the illness of their daughter and
sister, Mrs. Otis Cordell,
left for their homes Friday. Irma Jean and Lois Cordell accompanied their grandmother home.

Henry Cordell, son of Ellis
and Lucinda [Garren Parker] Cordell,
was born March 22, 1879 and died October 18, 1946 at his home in Athelstan, at
the age of 67 years, 6 months, and 16 days. He spent his entire life in Taylor
County, residing near Blockton, in and near Bedford, and his last years in
Athelstan, where he was telephone operator since August 1944.
He
was married to Clara Anna Tackett Jan. 28, 1908. To them were born 7 children, six of whom mourn his passing
along with 21 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife on May 27
1942 and daughter Lillie Davis,
January 2, 1945. He is survived by Mrs. Harve Carter of Clinton, Mo., John Cordell of Nebraska City and Bud Parker of Athelstan.
On
March 3, 1945 he was married to Anna Leer of Athelstan, who remains at the home of her sister in Sheridan.
Two
of his grandsons, Harold and Wilbur Durfey, were raised in his home with the same love and care as his own
children.
He
was a member of the IOOF during the time of its activity in Athelstan.
The
immediate family mourning this loss include Mabel Bycroft and family of Corning, Carl Cordell and family of Bedford, Cordys Newby and family of Platteville, Evelyn Morgan and family of Akron, Ohio, Cecil Cordell and family of Blockton, Mary Chandler and family, Harold Durfey and Wilbur Durfey of Athelstan.
The
funeral services were held at the Community church in Athelstan, Sunday, Oct.
20, conducted by Rev. Russell G. Nye. Burial was in the Athelstan Cemetery.

John Cordell, 84 Last Rites Held In Athelstan
Funeral
services for John Willie [William] Cordell, 84 of Athelstan, a native of Taylor County, were held March 20 in
Athelstan Community Church with Carl Cummings officiating. Mr. Cordell died March 18, 1979 in Ringgold County Hospital
in Mount Ayr. Interment was at the Athelstan (Ia.) Cemetery.
John
Willie Cordell was born June 8,
1894, in Taylor County, Iowa.
He
grew to maturity in the Athelstan area where he attended the public schools.
In1922
he was united in marriage to Mary Juanita Rusco and they lived all of their married life in the
Athelstan community. To this union seven children were born; three daughters
and four sons.
He
was employed as a farm laborer and in addition thereto some carpentry and
masonry work.
He
was preceded in death by his mother, Linda Cordell, and by his wife, Mary Juanita, who passed away February 7, 1973.
Left
to cherish his memory are his children: Mrs. Henry (Geraldine) Young; Mrs.
Burtle (Pauline) Young; Mrs. William (Coleene) [Colleen] Fleetwood; Gene;
Leonard; Doyle and Kelly Cordell;
sisters, Ruby Treese, Ida Bownes, Lola Mercer and Della McNees; 27grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; other
relatives and friends.
He
will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.

services for Leonard Cordell,
age 70 of Bedford were held Friday, November 24, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. at the
Ritchie Funeral Home with Pastor Ted DeHass officiating. Interment was held in
the Athelstan Cemetery in Athelstan. Memorials can be given in his name.
Services were conducted by the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.
Leonard
Motts Cordell was born March
12,1930 in Athelstan the son of John W.[illiam] Cordell and Mary Juanita Rusco Cordell. He grew up in the Athelstan area where he
attended school and later entered the United States Air Force. On June 21,1955,
he was united in marriage to Joyce Mutchler at the courthouse in Sidney.
Leonard was a carpenter by trade and enjoyed working with
his hands. In 1971 he and Joyce moved
to Bedford where they continued to live until his death.
Leonard liked the outdoors, going hunting
and fishing when time allowed, especially when he was able to take his
grandchildren. He loved country music and he and Joyce went to many dances over the years. He enjoyed
teasing and joking with the grandkids, and he never missed a birthday for his
children or grandchildren. Leonard never liked good-byes, he'd rather say, "see ya.”
Leonard is survived by his wife, Joyce of Bedford; three daughters, Debbie Weaver and husband, John of Blockton; Cindy Moore of Bedford; and Kathy Schrodt and husband, James of Bedford; a son, Keith Cordell and wife, Rusty of Parkview, Missouri; a daughter-in-law, Cindra
Elliott of Bosworth, Missouri;
two brothers, Doyle Cordell and wife, Alberta of Bedford;
and Kelly Cordell of
Athelstan; two sisters, Geraldine Young and husband, Henry of Athelstan and Pauline Young of Athelstan; seventeen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Preceding Leonard in death are his
parents, John and Juanita; two sons, Randy and Terry, at infancy; a brother, Gene; and a sister, Colleen Dillon.

Obituary
Lodicia Violet King was born at Hillsdale, Lucas County, Michigan,
April 8th, 1850, and died at her home in Sheridan, Missouri, October 2d, 1915,
aged 65years, 5 months arid 24 days. She came west to Taylor county, Iowa, when
a child. She united with the Baptist church when twelve year [s] of age and
remained a true and faithful Christian until death. She was united in marriage
to Marion [Francis] Cordell in
l865. To this union was born six children of which two are deceased. Those
living are Mrs. Flora Godsey,
Sheridan; Mrs.
Sarah
Godsey, Hopkins, and Mrs. Ida
Calkins and Mrs. Bertha
Winemiller, of Sheridan, Missouri.
She also raised two grandchildren, Alice and Viola Biggerstaff. She leaves a husband, five sisters and two
brothers and thirty grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn her loss. She
moved with her husband to Sheridan in 1910 and lived there until death came.
Funeral
services were conducted from the Sheridan Christian church by Eld. W. M. Hunt,
assisted by Rev. Harmon, pastor of the church.

Marion
Francis Cordell was born April 3,
1846, and departed this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Flora Godsey, in Athelstan, Iowa, September 13, 1923, aged 77
years, five months and ten days. He came to Iowa in early manhood, where he
spent most of his life. He was united in marriage to Lodicea Violet King August 13, 1865. To this union six children were
born, two of them being dead. Those living, are as follows: Mrs. Flora
Godsey, of Athelstan, Iowa; Mrs.
Sarah Godsey, of Hopkins, Mo.; Mrs.
Ida Calkins, of Sheridan, Mo.,
and Mrs. Bertha Winemiller, of
Sheridan, Mo. His faithful companion preceeded him to the glory land October 2,
1915. He also leaves to mourn his departure two brothers, Zade Cordell, of Athelstan, and Jack Cordell, of Bristow, Oklahoma. Also 22 grandchildren, and
27 great grandchildren, besides many friends.
He
united with the Baptist church many years ago, and was a firm believer until
the time of his death. Mr. Cordell was a kind, loving and faithful husband and father, and a good citizen unto
death.

funeral services were conducted in the Baptist church at Athelstan September
15, by Challie E. Graham, after which the remains were interred in the cemetery
at the same place. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of their many friends in
this hour of sorrow. May the kind, loving Father comfort, bless and guide them
all, and at last bring them home to Himself in glory.

E. [lecta] Young was born in
Green County, Wis., Dec. 7, 1859, and departed this life at the Taylor County
Home, Jan. 13, 1927 aged 67 years, 1 month and 6 days. She was united in
marriage to Zade Cordell in
August, 1877. Besides her companion, she leaves two brothers and four sisters: George

Gregory of Athelstan, Ia., Nancy
Banks of Iowa Center, Ia., and Ettie
Pence of Tama, Ia., besides many
other relatives and friends. She united with the Baptist church early in life.
She was a kind, loving wife and a good neighbor. The funeral services were
conducted at the Baptist church in Athelstan, Ia., January 14, 1927, by Challie
E. Graham, and the remains laid to rest in the cemetery at the same place. A
male quartette, composed of Marion, William and Calvin Jenkins and William
Freemyer, with Mrs. Ora Morris presiding at the piano, furnished the music for
the occasion. The hymns sung were "Rock of Ages", "Softly and
Tenderly", and "Jesus Lover of My Soul.”

Zade
Cordell was born in Vernon
County, Missouri, April 2, 1850, and departed this life at the Taylor County
home March 23, 1927, aged 76 years, 11 months and 21 days.
He
was united in marriage to Miss Sarah E. Young at Hopkins, Mo., Aug. 7, 1877. He had five
brothers and one sister, all of whom preceded him except one brother, Jack
Cordell, who resides in Oklahoma.
His companion preceded him Jan. 13, 1927. Besides his brother, he leaves a host
of other relatives and friends.
Mr.
Cordell had lived in Taylor
county for many years, and was always a highly respected citizen and neighbor.
The
funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church in Athelstan March 25,
1927, by Challie E. Graham, and the remains interred in the cemetery at the
same place. The music was furnished by Mrs. Chloe Stroburg, Marion Jenkins,
Calvin Jenkins and William Freemyer, with Mrs. Adell Morris presiding at the
piano. The hymns sang were "We Are Going Down the Valley,"
"Shall We Gather at the River," and "Shall We Meet Beyond the
River." The pallbearers were Ray Mullison, Raymond Treese, William
Jenkins, Al Kemery, Roy Weaver and Frank Cavin.
The bereaved ones have
the sympathy of their many friends, all of whom wish for them the richest
blessings of the Father in Heaven. May they commit their hearts and lives to
His keeping and follow where He leads, for He will take them home to the
"Tearless Land."

Gretchen Velva Fox Services Held
Gretchen
V. [elva Lilley] Fox died at the
Bergen Mercy Care Center, Omaha, Nebraska, May 20, 1983. She had been a patient
there for two months and 20 days. She was 75 years, six months and four days at
the time of her death. Gretchen Velva was born November 16, 1907 at Baxter, Iowa and later moved to
Blockton, Iowa.
On
November 11, 1936 she was united in marriage to Otis Edward Cordell at Grant City, Missouri. Two children were born
to bless this union, Donald Dean and Carolyn Kay. Three
stepchildren completed this unity; Irma Jean, Forrest Robert and Lois Marie.
Gretchen and Otis Cordell resided at their Farm northwest of Athelstan until
the time of his death, March 21, 1961. She then left the farm and moved to
Bedford.
On
January 12, 1970 she was married to Densmore Fox at Bedford. Mr. and Mrs. Fox resided at their home in Bedford until the time of
her death.
Mrs.
Fox was preceded in death by her
parents, two brothers and one sister.
She
leaves to cherish her memory, her husband Dennis of Bedford; two children: Donald Dean Cordell of Mead, Nebraska; Carolyn Kay (Mrs. Robert
Michal) of Torrance, Calif.;
three stepchildren: Irma Jean (Mrs. Merle Mc Pherren) of Federal Way, Washington; Forrest Robert
Cordell of Blockton, Iowa and Lois
Marie (Mrs. Richard Long) of
Findlay, Ohio; and also by 17 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Also
surviving are one brother, Clarence Lilley of Des Moines, and two sisters, Mrs. Beatrice Poldberg of Lenox, and Mrs. Beulah Schultz of Waukee, other relatives and many friends.
She
was a devoted and loving mother, a thoughtful and trusting friend. She became a
Christian early in life and was a member of the Seventh Day Advent Church in
Bedford.
Funeral
services were held May 23 at the Seventh Day Advent Church in Bedford with Rev.
Peter Dible officiating. Interment was in Athelstan Cemetery.
