A Sad Suicide!

Mrs. Jas. Place Shoots Herself, the Wound Resulting Fatally.

This afternoon about 1:30 the people of Bedford were shocked by the report that Mrs. Jas. Place [Florence Wilson Howe], wife of the one-legged popcorn dealer, had shot herself in her room at the Commercial House. The report proved to be only too true and the coroner was immediately notified.

No motive is known at present for the deed, except that she may have become despondent over some trouble or other. The dead woman is 25 years of age, and leaves a husband, two small children, and a widowed mother to mourn over her death. The revolver was placed close to her left breast before firing and the ball pierced her heart.

There is a report that the pistol went off as she opened the bureau drawer, but the theory of suicide is the generally accepted one.

Mrs. Florence Place committed suicide at Bedford, the 20th inst., by shooting herself through the heart with a revolver at one of the hotels. Family trouble is supposed to have been the cause. They were very poor, her husband being a cripple, and while she worked hard at washing, etc., for their support, it is said they did not get along peacefully together, and life is supposed to have become a burden to her.
