GRACE MAUDE BROWN

Funeral services for Grace Maude Brown were held Saturday, Feb. 4, 1989 at Clearfield Christian Church with Rev. Shirley Lockard and Rev. Carl Cummings officiating. Burial was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton, Iowa.

Grace Maude Kauble Brown, daughter of William Andrew Kauble and Alma Faye White Kauble, was born at Athelstan, Iowa September 9, 1912 and departed this life February 1, 1989 at Heartland West Hospital in St. Joseph, Mo. at the age of 76 years, four months and 22 days.

She grew to maturity in the Athelstan community in Taylor County where she attended the Works District Rural School and the Athelstan High School. She attended the Pentecostal Mount Zion Church east of Athelstan.

On March 17, 1931 she was united in marriage to Harold E. [zra] Brown at the Methodist parsonage in Bedford, Iowa. Rev. M.R. Tally officiated. They resided most of their married life in Taylor County where they engaged in farming.

Three children were born to this union: Robert, Harry and Charles.

She was a farm wife, a homemaker and shared her love with her family in so many ways as only a mother could do.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold E. [zra] Brown, March 6, 1980 and by her parents.

Left to cherish her memory are her three sons: Robert Armond Brown and his wife Phyllis, Pickering, Mo.; Harry E. Brown and his wife Pat of Sierra Vista, Az.; Charles Richard Brown and his wife Sharon of Clearfield; eight grandchildren: Curtis, Chris, Lorrie, Veronica, Randy, Todd, Terri and Harold;

a sister, Lola Madge Gardner and her husband Robert Elvin Gardner of Blue Springs, Mo.; other relatives and a host of friends.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Clearfield, Iowa.

Her family and loved ones will remember her as a kind and considerate person; one who enjoyed cooking for her family and friends and they will always remember her as a person who enjoyed putting a good big meal on the table for those she loved.

Andrew E. Meddles.

Andrew E. Meddles died at his home near Athelstan, Ia., February 20, 1914, after a long illness. The funeral services were held at the Mt. Zion church February 22, conducted by Challie T. Graham. Interment was made in the Athelstan cemetery.

Andrew Meddles was born in Taylor County, July 19, 1855. February 11, 1877, he was united in marriage to [Missouri] Jane McCormick. To this union were born four children, three of whom with the wife survive. They are, Mrs. Frank Allshlre [Ailshie] of Jackson Township, Mrs. Alfred Greer of St. Joseph, Mo., and Walter [Wallace] Meddles, who lives at home. With the exception of eleven years spent in Kansas Mr. Meddles had lived in Taylor county all of his life. He united with the Methodist Episcopal church in Kansas in 1885 and on returning to Iowa, joined the Baptist church, in which he was a faithful worker until death.

Andrew E. Meddles Dies

Andrew Meddles died at his home near Athelstan last week after a long illness.

Funeral services were held the following Sunday at the Mt. Zion church conducted by Rev. C. E. Graham. Interment was in Athelstan cemetery. Andrew E. Meddles was born in Taylor County in 1855, and in 1878 was married to Missouri J. [ane] McCormick. From this union four children were born, three of whom with his wife survive him.

The surviving children are: Mrs. Frank Alesshire [Ailshie] of Jackson township, Mrs. Alfred Greer of St. Joseph, Mo., and Walter [Wallace] Meddles, who still lives at home.

Obituary – Andrew E. Meddles was born in Taylor County, Iowa, July 19, 1855. After a long illness, he departed this life at his home near Athelstan, February 20th, 1914, aged 58 years, 7 months and 1 day. He was united in marriage to Missouri Jane McCormick [words unreadable] survive him, Ida died when 1 year old. The children living are Mrs. Frank Ailshie, of Jackson Township, Taylor County, Iowa; Mrs. Alfred Greer, of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Walter, who is at home. With the exception of 11 years spent in Kansas, he has lived in Taylor County all his life. He united with the M. E. church in Kansas in 1885. On returning to Iowa he united with the Baptist church, and lived a faithful life till death. None knew him but to love him. He was always pleasant, and made a host of friends among the young people, whom he delighted in being with, and having often in his home. He was a loving husband and a kind father. His name will be cherished in the hearts of his wife and children, and revered by friends and neighbors. One has left us whose precepts and example were ever before us for good. Besides his wife and children he leaves to mourn his departure three brothers and three sisters. The funeral services were conducted from the Mt. Zion Baptist church, February 22d, by Challie E. Graham, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Athelstan cemetery. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of a host of friends. May the kind, loving Father bless and guide them to the Tearless land.

EVA LAVINE MOORE

Eva Lavina Moore was born in Taylor County, Iowa January 14, 1902. She lived her life in Page and Taylor County, Iowa.

She leaves two daughters, Marlene Churchill of Bedford, Iowa and Darlene Carmichael of Hudson, Fla., two granddaughters Patricia and Connie; six great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; one son-in-law; nieces; nephews and a host of friends.

In her younger days she had been a clerk in a store and then became a LPN serving hospitals in Lincoln, Neb., Glenwood, Iowa, Corning, Iowa and Clarinda, Iowa.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Clarinda and a former member of the Rebecca Lodge of Gravity, Iowa.

Funeral services for Eva Lavina Moore, 87, were held at the Chapel of Shum-Novinger Funeral Home with Rev. Gerald L. Harry of First Baptist Church, Clarinda, officiating. Interment was at Washington Cemetery of Gravity, Ia. Mrs. Moore died February 2, 1989 at Bethesda Care Center, Clarinda, Iowa.

Mrs. Mary C. Ray.

Mary Caroline Wallace was born Feb. 12, 1861, in Taylor County, Iowa. She was married to Frances Ray Jan. 31, 1878, who also resided in Taylor county. No children were born to this union, but in 1893 a baby boy was adopted into the home and parental love and affection were showered upon him. No child in Taylor County was ever more tenderly loved by his parents than this one in the Ray home. The boy was named Vernon, and when he grew to manhood he married, and later has made his home in Miami, Florida.

In October 1919, Mrs. Ray came to Bedford to pay a visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Wallace. She remained until January 11, 1920. She had only been home one week when she was taken with a serious attack of rheumatism of the heart. After intense suffering for two weeks the angel of death released her from the earthly tabernacle, Feb. 1, 1920.

Under the preaching of B. A. Sunday during his great campaign in Denver, Colo., both Mr. and Mrs. Ray accepted Christ, and began Christian service in the Presbyterian Church.

The deceased leaves an aged father and mother, besides her husband and son, also a sister, Mrs. R. B. Westfall of Bedford, and three brothers, Douglass [Douglas] Wallace of Bedford; Vincent B. Wallace and Alva Wallace of New Bridgen, Alberta, Canada.

Mrs. Ray had spent nearly all of her live in and near Bedford. A host of friends mourn her departure, and extend their deepest sympathies to those bereft.

Funeral services were conducted at the home of her parents, Thursday afternoon. The sermon was preached by Rev. John F. Arnold. Interment at Lexington cemetery.

Services Held For Lester Round, 83

Funeral services for Lester Lloyd Round, 83, well known Bedford, resident, held April 2 in the First Baptist Church in Bedford, were conducted by Pastor James Nelson. Mr. Round died March 31 in St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebr. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Lester Lloyd Round was born in Worth County, Missouri on January 20, 1896, the son of Silas and Mary Scarbrough Round.

He grew to manhood in the vicinities of Sheridan, Missouri and Blockton, Iowa, and attended the public schools in those areas. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War I and served in France with the 339th Field Artillery.

He was married on November 30, 1919 to Mary Blanche Collar of Platteville, Iowa, with whom he was privileged to celebrate a Golden Wedding Anniversary. They welcome into their home in 1926 Lester's nephew, Virgil Brooks, and raised him as their son. In 1930 they became the parents of a daughter, Lorraine. His wife died on August 6, 1973.

On May 1, 1975 he married Mary E. Stephens of Blockton, Iowa.

He is survived by his wife, Mary of the home in Bedford; his nephew, Virgil Brooks and wife Betty of Ft. Worth, Texas; and their family, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Winborne and sons, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sanderson, by his daughter, Lorraine and her husband, Bill O'Dell, and their family, Robert and Martha of Bedford. He also leaves one brother and sister-in-law of Pleasanton, California, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Round; one sister-in-law, Florence Round of Arapahoe, Wyoming; step-daughters and their families, Jack and Edith Campbell of Blockton; Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Campbell and daughters of Topeka, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. Allen Campbell and family of Denver, Colorado; Lisa Campbell of Des Moines; Edna Peart of Denver, Colorado; Roger and Barbara Peart of Durango, Colorado.

He was indeed privileged to have known the Lord and to live amongst his family and friends for many years

Obituary - Delbert A. Safley

Delbert Andrew Safley was born near Bedford, August 27, 1922 and died in the Clarinda Municipal hospital, Thursday, August 21, 1947 at the age of 24 years, 11 months and 23 days.

He grew up to young manhood and graduated from the Bedford High School, with the class of '39. He entered the late war and after training at several camps and airfields, he became a staff sergeant in the air corps, and made twenty-two combat missions in the European theatre. He was discharged in 1945 and later he was employed by the New Market Oil Co.

Those who survive him are: his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Safley of the home; two sisters: Mrs. Chas. Cason of near Bedford, and Mrs. Lois Mullen of Los Angeles, California and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Bedford Christian church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. G. W. Swan. Interment was in the Fairview cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Oliver (Irma) Safley, 81, of Clearfield were conducted March 2 by Carl Cummings at the Clearfield Christian Church. Mrs. Safley died February 26, 1978 in Clearview Home in Clearfield. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery in Bedford.

Irma Velma Safley, daughter of Elmer Jarvis and Minnie Mae Hogue Jarvis, was born September 20, 1896 in Platteville, Iowa. She lived all of her life in Taylor County and the last year and half at the Clearview Home in Clearfield, Iowa.

She was united in marriage on December 31, 1919 in Bedford, Iowa, to Oliver Fremont Safley. They lived on the family Jarvis farm near Bedford, until they moved to a farm near Clearfield in the late 1940’s.

Mr. Safley preceded her in death on December 15, 1965.

Three children were born to this union. A son, Delbert Andrew Safley, who preceded his parents in death on August 21, 1947.

Two daughters survive, Mrs. William (Letha) Kleckner of Creston, and Mrs. Kenneth (Lois) Mullen of Arcadia, California; also surviving are one sister, Mrs. Lou (Wilda) Ackley of Bedford; 11 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son and one sister, Mrs. Loyd (Bertha) Grubb, and three grandchildren, Kenneth David Mullen, Charles Cason, Jr. and Linda Sue Kleckner.

Mrs. Safley was a member of the Christian Church of Clearfield.

She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed by all who loved and knew her.

O. F. Safley Found Dead

O. [liver] F. [remont] Safley was found dead Wednesday, Dec. 15th about 10:00 AM by his wife, who had become concerned when he did not return to the house from the barn. She went to look for him and found him dead at the barn.

Coroner Dr. M. T. Gordon was called and pronounced his death due to a Coronary Occlusion.

He had been suffering chest pains earlier, therefore Mrs. Safley was concerned.

His body is at Varner-Crew Funeral Home with funeral arrangements pending at this time.

OLIVER SAFLEY

Oliver Freemont [Fremont] Safley was born at Tipton, Iowa on December 9th, l885 and passed away at his home in Clearfield on Wednesday, December 15, 1965 at the age of 80 years and six days.

When he was nine years old, he came with his family to Taylor County, Iowa and has lived in the Conway and Clearfield Communities all his life until about four years ago when they retired from their farm and moved to their present home in Clearfield.

On December 31, 1919, he united in marriage to Irma V. [elma] Jarvis of Bedford and to this union three children were born; Two daughters, Mrs. Letha Kleckner of Conway, Iowa and Mrs. Lois Mullen of Arcadia, California. One son, Delbert Andrew, who passed away in August 1947.

Those left to mourn his passing are his wife, Irma, two daughters, Letha and Lois; two sons-in-law, eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. One brother, Merve Safley of Hopkins, Missouri, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Last rites were conducted on Saturday, Dec. 18th at 2:00 P. M from the Christian Church in Clearfield with burial in the Conway Cemetery.

Automobile Accident Fatal To Floyd Sleep

An automobile accident claimed the life of Floyd Sleep, 25, early Sunday morning. Sleep, who has been employed at the Opitz Motor Company in Clarinda, had left Saturday night for a fishing trip to Minnesota. According to reports, his car failed to make a turn on highway 71, and he died at Windom, Minn. His companions, Dean John, St. Joseph, Mo., and Bob Pruitt, Hopkins, were not seriously injured.

Sleep had been an auto mechanic in Clarinda since he left the armed services. He was in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy John of Bedford, baby daughter, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Troy Sleep, Bedford. Also surviving are three bothers, James, who is on Okinawa, Richard and Edwin at home, and two sisters, Mrs. Darwin Farrell, Shenandoah, and Joan, at home.

Obituary - Floyd Sleep

Floyd Neal Sleep eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Troy Sleep died of injuries received in a car accident at Windom, Minn., Sunday, July 3. He was born near Bedford, March 11, 1925; and his earlier years were spent in farming in Taylor County.

On December 20, 1946, he was married to Miss Dorothy John of Bedford, and since that time they have resided in Clarinda, where Floyd was employed as a mechanic with the Opitz Motor Company. They have one infant daughter, Linda Diane.

During World War II Floyd was with the Infantry Division of the U. S. Army, entering service on June 23, 1944, and receiving an honorable discharge on June 16, 1946. He was attached to the European-African, Middle-Eastern Theater of Operations; and later saw combat service in Central Europe. He was given the Purple Heart for wounds received in the "Battle of the Bulge". He also received three Bronze Battle Stars, and received the military citation, "Fourragere” from the Belgian government.

He is survived by his wife, daughter, and parents; two brothers and a sister, at home, Richard, Edwin and Joan; a brother, Pvt. Jim Sleep, stationed with the Armed forces on Okinawa; and a married sister, Mrs. Darwin Farrell of Shenandoah.

The funeral services were held at the Christian church in Bedford Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Ben W. Sinderson, assisted by the V.F.W. ‘s of Shenandoah. Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

Services held May 11 for Troy Sleep

[Martin] Troy Sleep was born April 19, 1898 in High Prairie Community, Polk Township, Taylor County, Iowa, to James F. [rancis] and Eva Proffitt Sleep.

He attended school at the High Prairie School and farmed in the area until he retired and moved to Shenandoah in 1968.

On July 26, 1924, Troy was united in marriage to Viona Ellistine Gray in Bedford. She preceded him in death on May 8, 1981.

Also preceding him in death were his parents, son Floyd in 1949, brothers Frank, Clarence, Harley and sister Edna.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Darwin (Jean) Farrell, Shenandoah and Mrs. Charles (Joan) Perkins, Rolling Hills, California; three sons, James of Los Angeles, California, Richard of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and Edwin of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Elza (Dona) Fine, Bedford, and Mrs. Goldie Narber, Hopkins; one brother, Harmon Sleep, Clarinda; 17 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

He died May 8, 1986, a resident of Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, following a brief illness. He was 88. Funeral services were held at the Jennings Chapel in Shenandoah on May 11. Honorary pallbearers were Larry Farrell, Rick Sleep, Brad Sleep, Laird Perkins, Don Murphy and Greg Stark. Graveside services were conducted by the Reverend Carl Cummings, Bedford, at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 12. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery in Bedford, Iowa.

Viona Sleep, 72 Final Rites Held May 11

Funeral services for Mrs. Martin Troy (Viona) Sleep, 72, of Shenandoah, formerly of Bedford, held May 11 in Jennings Chapel in Shenandoah at 1:30 p.m. with graveside services at Fairview Cemetery, in Bedford at 3:30 p.m., were officiated by Rev. Donald R. Arthur of the United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. Mrs. Sleep died May 8, 1981 in her residence, Autumn Park Apartments, in Shenandoah.

Viona Ellistine Sleep, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth [Mary] Querry [Query] Gray, was born October 9, 1908 in Taylor County, Iowa. She was educated in the Siam, Iowa Schools.

On July 26, 1924, Viona was united in marriage with Martin Troy Sleep. Following their marriage they resided on a farm in Taylor County until their retirement in 1968 when they moved to Shenandoah. Viona spent much of her time helping her husband farm and raising their two daughters and four sons: Troy and Viona were always active in their community.

Preceding her in death were her parents, one son, Floyd, in 1949, one brother, and one sister.

Viona is survived by her husband, Troy; two daughters Mrs. Darwin (Jean) Farrell of Shenandoah, Mrs. Charles (Joan) Perkins of Los Angeles, Calif.; three sons, James Sleep of Los Angeles, Calif., Richard Sleep of Manitowoc, Wisc., and Edwin Sleep of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; one brother, LeRoy Gray of Anderson, Calif.; her foster mother, Eunice Melvin of Sacramento, Calif., and a foster sister, Garnett Pendergraft, also of Sacramento.

HAROLD D. WELCH

Funeral services for Harold D. Welch were held Monday, Jan. 30, 1989 at the First Christian Church in Lenox with Dr. Jack Cutbirth, Rev. Carl Cummings and Donald Jensen officiating. Masonic rites were given by Tremont Lodge #343 A.F. & A.M. Interment was at West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox, Iowa.

Harold Welch, only son of Chester and Anna Maude Blair Welch, was born on a farm near Gravity, Iowa on May 4, 1908. He departed this life on January 26, 1989 at the age of 80 years.

He attended rural schools in Grove Township and graduated from Lenox High School in 1925. He gave his life to Christ at the age of 18, becoming a member of Blue Grove and later transferring his membership to Lenox Church of Christ. He served as an elder of the church for 36 years resigning due to ill health.

On December 25, 1928 he was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Lena Martha Harden. They established their home on a farm west of Lenox where they lived for 47 years, retiring to Lenox from 1975 to 1986, when Lena answered the Heavenly Father's call. Since then he has resided in the Clearview Home in Clearfield.

In 1941 Harold became a member of Tremont Lodge #343 in Lenox, where he served as Master in 1945 and 1981. In 1942 he became instructor in Ritualistic Work of the Masonic Lodge. He had the privilege of giving the Masonic work to his father Chester, son-in-law Donald Shepherd, and his son Eugene; also serving as Installing Officer by installing Eugene as Master of two lodges: Lodge #590 in Nodaway and Tremont Lodge #343 in Lenox. At the time of his death he was a member of Noble Lodge in Clearfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Lena. He leaves to mourn his passing his son Eugene of Lenox; daughter Twila Jean and husband Donald Shepherd of LaVista, Neb.; granddaughter Terri Twylene and husband Terry Haley of Elkhorn, Neb.; grandson Rick Shepherd and wife Terri Sue of Omaha; four great grandchildren whom he dearly loved: Jesse, Kimberly, and Jayme Haley; and Amy Shepherd.

His earthly toil is finished and he was ready to answer his Master's call. He will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends.
