C.
[larence] A. [lva] Phelps, a
long-time resident of Bedford and community died unexpectedly at his home in
west Bedford late Sunday evening. Funeral services were held the Wetmore
Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Clement Loehr. Burial in
Fairview cemetery.
Clarence
Alva Phelps, son of William
Sylvester and Louisa Adeline
Campbell Phelps, was born June 6,
1873 in Jasper County, Iowa.
In
1889 the Phelps family moved
to Taylor County, to a farm two miles west of Bedford and here Alva grew to manhood.
On
January 1, 1903 he was married to Miss Mable Olmsted of Genoa, Ill. The young couple then moved to a
farm two miles farther west, where route No. 2 makes the big swing to the
north, where they lived most of the time until 20 years ago when they moved to
Bedford.
Mr.
and Mrs. Phelps united with the
Gilead church northwest of Bedford, and when it ceased to function their
membership was transferred to the Bedford Methodist church.
Two
children were born to them: Mrs. Nita Verlee Griffith, who resides seven miles northeast of Bedford,
and Chester Phelps, a
custodian at the local school building.
Mrs. Phelps and their two children survive, as well as two
grandchildren, Evelyn and Floyd Griffith, Mrs. Stella Tointon,
Bedford, a sister, and another sister, Mrs. Ola Cook resides in Denver, Colo.

Louisa
Adeline Campbell was born in
Jasper County, Iowa, May 3, 1854, and died at St. Mary's hospital, Pueblo,
Colo., Tuesday, September 17, 1907, from pneumonia.
The
remains were brought here Saturday, and on Sunday the funeral was held from the
residence 2 miles northwest of town, conducted by Rev. Win. B. Thompson and
interment was in Fairview cemetery.
On
December 8, 1872, she was united to William S. [ylvester] Phelps, near Lynnville, Iowa, where they made their home
until moving to Taylor County in March 1889. Here they bought a farm and for
the past eighteen years they have occupied this same place. It was here they reared
a family of four children, Clarence A. [lva], Bedford; Mrs. Tully [Leonard] Fox [Dona Fay], Pueblo, Colo.; Mrs. Charles [Lewis] Tointon
[Dorothy Estella], Bedford, Iowa; Mrs. C. [yrus] O.[ran] Cook [Ola Maude], Durango, Colo. All the children were present at the funeral. Early
in life she united with the M.E. church and has always lived a conscientious
Christian life.
She
leaves to mourn her death, aside from the children mentioned, a husband, one
brother, M. E. Campbell, of
Seattle, Wash.; two sisters, Miss Olivia Campbell and Mrs. S. Campbell. She had been visiting her daughter at Pueblo
since about the first of the year.

Wife and Mother Gone
Mrs.
William S.[ylvester] Phelps died
at St. Mary's hospital in Pueblo, Colorado, of pneumonia, on Tuesday, September
17th, 1907, aged 53 years, 4 months and 14 days. The body was shipped to
Bedford arriving here Saturday. The funeral services were held at the home two
miles west of Bedford on Sunday, September 22nd, at 2 o'clock p. m., conducted
by Rev. W. B. Thompson. Interment at Fairview.
Louisa
Adeline Campbell was born May 3,
1854, and was married to William S.[ylvester] Phelps at Lynnville, Jasper county, Iowa, on December 8,
1872. Of the children born to this union, Clarence Alva, the youngest still resides at the parental home, Mrs. Tully [Leonard] Fox [Dona Fay] lives at Pueblo,
Colo., Mrs. C. [yrus] O. [ran] Cook [Ola Maude] at Durango, in the same state, and Mrs.
Charles [Lewis] Tointon [Dorothy Estella], near Bedford. All were present at the obsequies.
Her
daughter, Mrs. Fox has not
been in good health for some time and a few months ago Mrs. Phelps went to Pueblo to help care for her. About two
weeks ago Mrs. Phelps was
taken ill with pneumonia and her condition becoming serious, she was removed to
St. Mary's Hospital where the best of care and skillful medical aid could be
given her. All, however, was in vain. The Grim Specter had marked her as his
own, and human aid could not avail, nor push back the dark and rolling clouds
that intervened between her and the great beyond. She died peacefully, afar
from home, but surrounded by friendly hearts and loved ones, and her last hours
were soothed and robbed of anguish as far as love, care and skill could avail.

W.
[illiam] S. [ylvester] Phelps died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C.[harles] L. [ewis] Tointon [Dorothy
Estella], Thursday, August 10,
having been failing in health for a long time. The funeral services were held
at the Tointon home at 1 P. M. Monday, conducted by Rev. J. W. Goodsell of the
Methodist Episcopal Church. Interment was made in the Fairview cemetery.
Mr.
Phelps lived on a farm west of
town for many years until after his health failed and he was no longer able to
do heavy physical work. Since which time he had made his home principally with Mrs
Tointon and his son Alva west of town.
William
Sylvester Phelps was born in
Richland Township, Mahaska County, Iowa, August 27, 1847. He was united in
marriage to Adaline [Louisa Adeline] Campbell in 1872 and to this union four children were
born, C. [larence] A. [lva] Phelps,
west of Bedford; Mrs. Dorothy [Estella] Tointon, north of town; Mrs. Ola Maude Cook of Durango, Col., and Dona Farilla Fox, who died in 1908. The wife and mother died in
September 1907. Deceased is survived by a brother, Sam Phelps, of the state or Washington, a sister, Mrs.
Florence Timberel, of Idaho, and
a half sister, Mrs. Mary L. Talbott of Marshalltown, Iowa, who was present at the funeral.
Mr.
Phelps held membership in the
Methodist Episcopal church at Sully, Jasper County, Iowa.

Jackson Tamerius, third son of Henry
and Fernata [Jane Miller] Tamerius was born in Marion County, Iowa, May 15, 1862 and died at the home of his
nephew, [Andrew] Woody
Tamerius at Athelstan, Feb 24,
1947 at the age of 84 years, 9 months and 9 days.
He
is survived by one brother, Charlie Tamerius of Elgin, Oregon; two sisters, Sallie Combs and Lizzie Tamerius of California.
He
was a member of the Baptist church for many years. He lived true to his faith
and was loved by everyone who knew him.
He
lived a bachelor life, making his living from place to place but has made his
home with Woody Tamerius and
his family for the past five years.
The
funeral services were held Wednesday at the community church by Rev and Mrs T J
Overholt. Burial was in the Athelstan cemetery.

Woody
[Andrew Woodrow] Tamerius, son of Henderson and Mima [Jemima Jane Goodwin] Tamerius, died at his home Jan. 30, at the age of 61 years, 10 months, and 19 days. He was
born in Washington State on March 11, 1890. Ho came to Iowa with his parents
when just a small boy and had lived In Taylor county since.
On
Feb. 14, 1913 he was married to Fernata Ann Kimbler of Knoxville, Iowa. To them five children were
born. One son, Lawrence [Gerald],
preceded him in death July 22, 1951.
He
is survived by his wife, Fernata;
one son, George [Eugene], of
Bedford; three daughters, Mrs. Charles O'Hara [Beatrice] of Bedford, Mrs. Orville McNeese [Bessie] of Sheridan, Mo., Mrs. Richard Saville [Mary Ellen] of Athelstan; one sister, Mrs. Hazel Matheny of Blockton; two brothers, Roy Tamerius of Conway, and Hoyt Tamerius of Belleville, Kans.; three grandchildren, Sara
McNeese, Vernon and Vincent O'Hara.
Funeral
services were held at the Athelstan church Feb. 2, conducted by Rev. Robt. M.
Peters, pastor of the Bedford Methodist church. Burial was in the Athelstan
cemetery.

Carl
Albert Tamerius, son of James
and Elizabeth [Louisa Reeves] Tamerius,
was born July 9, 1912 in Taylor County, Iowa, and died August 27, 1957 at the
Veterans hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 45 years, 1 month and 18
days.
He
spent most of his life in Taylor County, Iowa. He was married in 1940 to Ona
[Delpha] Hogue and to this union
were born two sons, Don Carl of Clearfield and Aden LeRoy of Lenox. He was married February 19, 1951 to Bertha Weichert.
He
was preceded in death by his father and mother and one infant sister and an
infant brother.
He
is survived by his wife and sons and two brothers, Laverne of Durbin, N. D., and Andrew of Iowa City, Iowa; also three sisters, Florence of Bedford, Josephine Duttlinger of Iowa City and Pauline Kerher [Kehrer] of Mountain View, Calif.
Carl was a veteran of World War II,
having served with the navy and was wounded in action at Trinidad in the Dutch
East Indies. He worked as a mechanic and welder and took ill while working on
construction in Illinois. He was rushed to the Veterans hospital in Des Moines
on Wednesday and died the following Tuesday.

services for George Eugene Tamerius,
48, of Athelstan, were held February 19 at the Athelstan Community Church with
Rev. James Ferris officiating. Mr. Tamerius died Feb. 15, 1966 at University Hospitals in
Iowa City. Interment was at Athelstan Cemetery.

Tamerius [Andrew Woodrow] and Fernata [Ann Kimbler] Matheny was born May 26, 1917 at Blockton Iowa and
departed from this life at the University Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa on
February 15, 1966 at the age of 48 years, eight months and 9 days.
He
had spent most [of] his life in Taylor County being very active in all
community affairs as long as his health permitted.
He
was a friend to all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his passing, his mother, Mrs.
Matheny of Athelstan; and three
(3) sisters, Mrs. Orville McNeese [Bessie] of Athelstan; Mrs.
Chas. O. Harra [Hara] [Beatrice] of Allendale, Mo., and Mrs. Jack Mink of Council Bluffs, Iowa; five nephews, four
nieces; one great niece and one great nephew; other relatives and a host of
friends.
Final
rites were conducted from the Athelstan Community Church with Rev. James Ferris
of Blockton, Iowa officiating at 2:00 P. M. with burial at the Athelstan
Cemetery on Saturday, February 19, 1966.
Music
by Mrs. Louise Archer, Marvel Lawrence and Mary Weaver.
Casket
bearers were Bill Fleetwood, Henry Young, Leonard Cordell, Ben Murphy, Gordon

[Fernata Jane Miller] and Henry Tamerius was born in Marion County, Iowa June 18, 1858 and died Sunday Dec.
17 at the home of his son [Andrew] Woody Tamerius at Platteville
at the age of 81 years, 5 months and 30 days.
Most
of his life had been spent in Iowa, for the past 38 years in Taylor County.
On
Jan. 1, 1881 he was married to Mima Jane Goodwin at Knoxville. To them six sons and two daughters
were born. Those preceding him in death were Worthy Monroe on Sept. 19, 1907 and James Henry on May 11, 1927.
Surviving
are Roy [Marion LeRoy] of Bedford, Hoyt of Grant City, Mo., Frank [Cleveland] of Blockton, [Andrew] Woody, Mrs. Joe Matheny [Hazel] and Mrs. Paul [Collins] Matheny [Fernata Margaret] of Platteville. Three brothers and two sisters
also survive, John of Oregon, Andrew of Blockton, Charley of California, Lizzy and Sally of California.
His
wife preceded him in death, March 6, 1939.
He
leaves 32 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
He
has been in poor health for the past two years.
The
funeral services were held at the Platteville church Tuesday afternoon,
conducted by Rev. C. Max Buck of Bedford. Burial was in the Platteville
cemetery.

daughter of James Henry and Margaret Ann [Ward] Goodwin, was born near Winthrop, Kansas, Nov. 12, 1861,
and departed this life at the home of her son, [Andrew] Woody, at Platteville March 6, 1939, at the age of 77 years, 3 months and
23 days.
Most
of her life was spent in Iowa and the past 38 years in Taylor County. On Jan.
1, 1881, she was united in marriage to Henderson Tamerius at Knoxville. To this union six sons and two
daughters were born. Those preceding her in death — Worthy Monroe on Sept. 19, 1907, and James Henry on May 11, 1927. Surviving are Roy [Marion LeRoy] of Bedford, Hoyt of Grant City, Frank [Cleveland] of Blockton, and [Andrew] Woody, Mrs. Joe Matheny [Hazel] and Mrs. Paul
[Collins] Matheny [Fernata
Margaret] of Platteville. Two
sisters and a brother also survive — Mrs. Myrtle Brickle of La Grande, Oregon, Mrs. Luella Carr of Seattle, Washington, and John Goodwin of La Grande, Oregon.
Besides
her aged husband, children, brother and sisters she leaves 33 grandchildren, 7
great grandchildren and many friends. She will be greatly missed.
She
had been in failing health for several years, and had been cared for in her
son's home the past few years.
Funeral services were
held at the Platteville church and interment was made in the Platteville
cemetery. Six grandsons were the pallbearers — Carl, Laverne, Andrew,
Ralph and Ernest Tamerius and Earl
[Dwight] Matheny.

Tamerius was born north of
Platteville on April 19, 1939, and died June 20, 1951, at the age of 12 years,
two months and one day.
Lawrence and his nephew, Donald [Edward] McNeese, drowned in the pond on his father's farm.
Surviving
are his father and mother, and three sisters, Bessie McNeese, Bedford, Beatrice O’Hara of Grant City, Mo., Mary [Ellen] Sabel [Saville] of Redding, Iowa, and one brother, George [Eugene], two nephews and one niece.
Funeral
services were held at the Community church at Athelstan, June 22 conducted by
Rev. and Mrs. T. J. Overholt.
Interment
was made in the Athelstan cemetery.

Marion
Leroy Tamerius, son of Henderson

was born May 5, 1887 in Marion County, Iowa, and died at the age of 67 years,
four months, four days.
He
leaves to mourn his departure, one brother, Hoyt Tamerius of Bellville, Kans.; and one sister, Mrs. Port
Miller of Blockton.
Preceding
him in death were his father and mother, four brothers and one sister: Worthy,
James, Frank, Mrs. Margaret Matheny and Woody Tamerius.
Roy will always be remembered as a hard worker, more
than willing to help others, and very devoted to his family and friends.

were held December 1 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Rev. Carl
Cummings officiating. Burial was at Maloy Cemetery, Maloy, Iowa.

at Parkdale Manor in Maryville, Mo.
Ruth
Tamerius, daughter of John
Scott and Sarah Brown Scott, was born in Ringgold County, near Maloy, Iowa
December 28, 1892 and grew to maturity in the Maloy and Blockton area where she
attended the public school and the Christian Church. She taught school in Gay
Township prior to her marriage on February 23, 1915 to Frank C. [leveland]
Tamerius. They were married at
the Methodist parsonage in Bedford, Iowa.
They
lived in Ringgold County Iowa and engaged in farming. To this union five
children were born: Francel, Thelma [Loris], Ralph, John [Donald] and
Terence.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother Ralph; a sister Rena and a grandson Edward [Alan] Walston.
Left
to cherish her memory are her children: Francel and her husband Howard Barton of La Jolla, Calif.; Thelma and her husband Vane Walston of Bedford, Iowa; Ralph Tamerius of Bedford, Iowa; John and his wife Phyllis of Bremerton, Wa.; Terence and his wife Mary of Media, Pa.; 13 grandchildren; 34 great
grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren; a sister, Ruby Soma of Lenox, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives
and friends.
Following
the death of her husband she moved to California where she was employed in the
U.S. Navy Air Station at San Diego, Ca. under U.S. Navy Civil Service, from
1940 until 1960 when she retired and returned to Bedford to make her home.
Her
family and friends will remember her as a kind and considerate loved one and
she will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

remains of the young man named Worthy Tamerius were yesterday afternoon shipped to his home near
Blockton, in Taylor County, he having passed away at Cottage hospital from an
attack of appendicitis. The young man, who was but twenty-three years of age,
was brought to the city Wednesday night, too late for medical aid to succor
him. Interment will take place at Blockton. —Friday's Creston American.

WORTHY TAMERIUS
On
the 19th day of September 1907, the soul of Worthy [Monroe] Tamerius, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henderson Tamerius, took its flight and returned to the Heavenly
Home. He passed away after suffering great agony for four days. Thinking to
slay the grim reaper he was taken to the Creston hospital, but all hopes failed,
and Worthy only lived two
hours. Death was caused by appendicitis and peritonitis. His body was shipped
to Conway and taken to his father's home in Gay Township. He was born Oct 5,
1885, aged 21 years, 11 months and 11 days; he has resided in Taylor county for
several years.
He was married to Miss
Nellie Reeder April 16, 1903, who
with little Harry, is left to
mourn the loss of husband and father by his untimely death. He also leaves
father, mother, five brothers and two sisters. The funeral services were held
at Platteville church conducted by Rev. Knoll, of Blockton, and were attended
by a large concourse of sorrowing friends. Interment was in Platteville
cemetery and his favorite friends were his pallbearers; they were Walter
Morris, Johnie Carter, Burrel Scroggie, Tommie and Jemmie Gaule, who by their
tears told of their sadness in the last act for him they loved, for, through
his death, there is sorrow in many hearts.

[TAMERIUS, WORTHY MONROE]

BLOCKTON – W. [orthy] Tamerious [Tamerius], living northwest of town, was taken to Creston a few days since to have an operation performed for appendicitis, but he could not survive the shock and died from the effects. The remains were brought here last week for interment.
