Elmer Adams Rites Jan. 25

Elmer Mile [s] Adams, son of Major A. [nderson] Adams and Clara J. [ane] Hitchcock Adams was born August 2, 1893 in Nebraska and departed from this life in his sleep on January 23, 1966 at his home in Blockton, Iowa at the age of 72 years, five months and 21 days.

He had been ill with a heart condition for about a year prior to his death.

He is survived by one sister - Mrs. Frank Irvin [Esther Eliza] of Blockton, Iowa, two brothers, W. [illiam] R. Adams of Springville, Iowa and Ray Adams of Vinton, Iowa. One brother - in - law; one sister- in - law, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and his parents.

Last rites were conducted from the Blockton Christian Church on Jan. 25th with Rev. James Ferris officiating. Interment in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Blockton.

Funeral services for Elmer Milo [Miles] Adams, 72, of Blockton were held January 25 at the Blockton Christian Church with Rev. James Ferris and Rev. Clarence Landis officiating. Mr. Adams died at his home in Blockton Jan. 23, 1966. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton.

Elmer Milo Adams was born on August 2, 1893 in Nebraska.

He was the son of Major A. [nderson] Adams and Clara J. [ane] Hitchcock Adams.

He has spent the greater part of his life in or around Blockton area.

He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Frank Irvin, of Blockton and two brothers, W. R. Adams of Springville, Iowa and Ray Adams of Vinton, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Mr. Frank Irvin of Blockton; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. W. R. Adams, Springville, Iowa, and Mrs. Ray Adams, Vinton, Iowa; and a host of nephews and nieces, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and his parents.

He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Graveside services for Bernice Brown, (wife of "Skeeter" Brown), age 80 of Branson, Missouri, formerly of Lenox, who died November 23, 1999 in Las Vegas, Nevada were held Saturday, November 27, 1999 at 10:30 a.m. at North Fairview Cemetery with Pastor Dena Vittorio officiating. Services were conducted by the Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox.

Bernice Edna Brown was born August 9, 1919 in Lenox, the daughter of Burt Williams and Tura Young Williams. She grew up attending school in Lenox, graduating in 1935. In 1938 she was united in marriage to Marvin "Skeeter" Brown in Maryville, Missouri. To this union two children were born, Leonard and Roger.

Bernice was a homemaker most of her life. She and Skeeter lived in Lenox until 1960 when they moved to Bedford. In 1969 they moved to Clarinda, retiring in 1975, when they moved to Branson, Mo. Bernice continued living in Branson following the death of her husband in 1995. After suffering a stroke in August of this year, she moved to Las Vegas to live with her son, Leonard.

Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Leonard Brown and fiancée Sandra Tabor of Las Vegas, Nevada and Roger Brown and wife Rhonda of Lawrence, Kansas; two sisters-in-law, Bertha Williams of Lenox and Bernice Brown of Phoenix, Arizona; five grandchildren, two step grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death was her husband Skeeter in 1995, her parents, Burt and Tura, and two brothers, Melvin and Glen.

Obituary

Duane Gayland King, invalid son of Roy C. and Mina A. [ngeline] King, was born April 14, 1918, at Athelstan, and passed away at his home in Blockton Tuesday morning, Jan. 10, 1940, at the age of 21 years, 9 months and 2 days.

He was a member of the Christian church and always enjoyed attending the services when health permitted.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy C. King; two sisters, Mrs. Gordon Griffith of Bridgeport, Nebr., and Donna at home; one brother, Eldon, at home; his grandfather, W. E. King, at home, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C. [assius] M. King of Athelstan; also many other relatives and a host of friends.

Duane always appreciated the many acts of kindness extended to him during his years of affliction.

Funeral services were held at the Blockton Christian church Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. Max Buck, pastor of the Bedford Christian church. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery, Blockton.

Duane Gayland King Dead
Duane Gayland King, son of Mayor and Mrs. Roy C. King, passed away at 3 o'clock Tuesday morning at the age of 21 years, 9 months and 2 days. The lad had been an invalid for eighteen years. Pneumonia was the immediate cause of his death.
Funeral services will be held at the Christian church this (Thursday) afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. C. Max Buck of Bedford, and burial in Rose Hill cemetery, Blockton.

Mrs. Ida King, 83, died Dec. 29 at the home of her son, Roy King in Blockton, where she had made her home since the death of her husband, C. [assius] M. King, two years ago.

Funeral services were held at the Christian church in Blockton at 2 p.m., Monday, Dec. 31 conducted by Rev. C. A. Abbott. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery at Blockton.

Mrs. King is survived by the son and two daughters.

Obituary - Mrs. Ida King

Ida Ellen Sharp, daughter of Marlon [Francis Marion] and Lydia Sharp [Elizabeth “Libby” Fender], was born in Mercer County, Ill., Nov. 20, 1868 and died at the home of her son, Roy C. King in Blockton Dec. 29, 1951, at the age of 83 years, one month and nine days.

When she was four years old, her mother died and for several years thereafter she made her home with her grandparents, who resided in the State of Kansas and later in Taylor county, Iowa, where she spent the greater part of her life.

When a young woman she became a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist church located northwest of Athelstan.

On April 22, 1886 she was married to Cassius M. King, who preceded her in death January 8, 1950. To them were born three children, Roy C. King of Blockton, Mrs. C. [arl] A. [ustin] Stickelman [Pearl] of Winterset, Mrs. A. E. Williams [Vera Dell] of Cherokee, all of whom survive her.

She is also survived by eight grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren; two half-sisters, Mrs. Jonah [Wilson] Humphrey [Pumphrey] [Allie May] of St. Joseph, Mrs. J. C. Collins [Nina] of Kansas City; three half-brothers, Dallas [Marion] Sharp of Troy, Kans., Frank Sharp and Clyde Sharp of Kansas City.

Funeral services were held Dec. 31, at the Christian church in Blockton, conducted by Rev. C. A. Abbott. Burial was In Rose Hill cemetery.

Final Rites Held For Roy C. King

Funeral services for Roy C. King, long time Blockton resident, were held June 12 at Blockton Christian church with Rev. James Ferris officiating. Mr. King died June 9 at St. Francis Hospital, Maryville, Mo., at the age of 77 years, six months and three days. Interment was at Rose Hill cemetery, Blockton.

The following obituary was included in the services:

Roy C. King, the son of Cassius and Ida [Ellen Sharp] King, was born in Montgomery County, near Red Oak, Iowa, on Dec. 6, 1886.

At the age of one the family moved to Chicago, Ill., where he grew up and received his education and graduated from the Chicago Public schools in 1901.

In 1904 his parents moved southwest of Blockton, and later moved to a farm northwest of Blockton.

In April of 1908 Roy joined the Christian church in Maloy and later transferred to the Blockton Christian church 1911.

In 1910 Roy gave violin lessons to many youngsters, on coming to Blockton. Also that year Roy was asked to play every Sunday at the Christian church and has been faithful in playing every Sunday but for a few exceptions.

In 1911 Roy C. King was united in marriage to Nina [Mina] A. [ngeline] King August 2 and to this union were born four children, two girls and two boys, Ila [Ellen], Donna, Eldon [Leroy] and Duane.

Roy was Mayor of Blockton for 20 years from 1936-1956 and was instrumental in getting a water system, and the highway surfaced. He was a member of the Bethany Lodge No. 320 AF & AM and received his 50 year pin January 17, 1950.

Preceding him in death were his wife Nina, his parents, two sisters, Pearl Stickelman, Vera Williams; and his son, Duane. He is survived by Miss Donna King of the home, Mrs. Gordon (Ila) Griffith of Scottsbluff, Nebr.; Eldon King of Blockton; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; four nephews; one niece and many, many friends.

Coryl Elizabeth Miller

Coryl Elizabeth Damewood, daughter of Clyde Melvin and Blanche May Damewood, was born March 25, 1912, at the family farmstead near Sharpsburg. She was to have three sisters: Blythe Larene, Margaret Eva, and Doris May. She attended country school at Marshall #2, followed by high school at Sharpsburg. In her early childhood, she was baptized into the Methodist Church at Gravity.

In 1930 Coryl was united in marriage to Charlie Jones, Jr. To this union was born two daughters: Mary Margaret and Coryl Belle (Chinky). This family spent their entire married life on a farm two miles east of Sharpsburg. In 1952, Charlie lost his life in a farm related accident, but the family continued to live on the farm.

On February 25, 1955, Coryl was married to Raymond Jr. (Bing) Miller. They continued to live on the farmstead and operated the Miller Chevrolet Dealership in Lenox. Coryl was a full partner and bookkeeper for the firm. During these years, they were blessed with Leanne Tyler as a member of the Eberle family, and three granddaughters: Coryl Ann Hurd, Kay Marie Eberle, and Kim Kristine Eberle.

Coryl was preceded in death by her daughter Mary Margaret, great granddaughter Mary Kay Hurd, sisters Blythe and Doris, and her parents.

Besides her husband Bing, left to remember her love and to mourn her passing are her daughter Chinky and husband Bill Eberle; sister Margaret and husband Vane Lucas; three granddaughters; three great grandsons: Shane, Toby and Andy; and a host of relatives and friends.

Coryl was a kind and loving person; always interested in the welfare of those around her. She was an ambitious person who shared in all family responsibilities, as well as the concerns of her friends and relatives. She suffered greatly the last weeks of her life, but never complained. She cooperated completely with the doctors, nurses, and all others who worked to make her comfortable. She is already greatly missed by her husband and family as well as friends who tried to assist her.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 6, 1988 at the First Christian Church in Lenox with Dr. Jack Cutbirth officiating. Burial was at North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

Raymond "Bing" Miller

Raymond "Bing" Miller, age 79 of Lenox died May 9, 1999 at the Lenox Care Center.

Funeral services were held Thursday, May 13, 1999 at Lenox Christian Church in Lenox with Rev. Dena Vittorio officiating. Burial in the North Fairview Cemetery at Lenox with Military Rites by Parkinson Post #250, Lenox American Legion. Coen Beaty Funeral Home of Lenox was in charge of arrangements.

Raymond was born February 7, 1920 in Bedford, Iowa to Raymond B. [ell] Miller, Sr and Ruby Pearl Miller. He graduated from Lenox High School in 1938. On February 25,1955 he was united in marriage to Coryl Elizabeth Damewood Jones. Raymond owned and operated the Miller Chevrolet in Lenox. His entire life was spent in Taylor County except while in Iceland during World War II.

He was a member of the Lenox Christian Church, Lenox Rotary and Parkinson Post #250 Lenox American Legion. He served in the United States Army,

World War II, 1941-1945.

Survivors include a daughter, Chinky [Coryl Belle] Eberly of Des Moines and a brother, David (Nancy) Miller of Springfield, VA; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1988; son-in-law Bill Eberle; grandson-in-law, Willie Smith, Jr. and a grandson, Andy Seal.

Raymond [Bell] Miller, 54, of Lenox died early this Thursday morning, Jan. 3 at University hospital, Iowa City following surgery at two different times the past several weeks.

He is survived by his wife [Ruby Pearl Miller]; two sons, David, a lawyer in the U. S. Navy and stationed in Virginia, and Raymond, Jr., of Lenox; and by four sisters, Mrs. Jasper Perkins, Mrs. Wm. A. [lbert] D. [avid] Nye died suddenly at his home south of Mount Ayr on Sunday of last week at the age of 70 years, 10 months and 14 days. Mr. Nye was an agent for the Great Western a number of years, being located at Athelstan, Benton and other points. He served Taylor County as treasurer four years and represented the Adams-Taylor district as senator in the 35th and 36th General Assemblies. Burial was made at Athelstan.

O. H. Pointer Dies In Wyoming

Word has been received here by relatives of the death of Oley H. Pointer of Sheridan, Wyo. Mr. Pointer's funeral was held at the Reed Funeral Home and burial in the Sheridan Municipal cemetery, Wyo., on May 17, 1957.

Mr. Pointer was preceded in death by his wife, the former Jessie M. Edmundson of Bedford, who passed away in 1948.

He is survived by one brother Virgil Pointer of Denver, Colo.

S. W. Taylor Dead

S. [ilvester] W. Taylor, who had been critically ill for some months, died last week Tuesday, Nov. 2 at about noon. In failing health for the past year, he went some months since to Iowa City, submitted to an operation which did not check the decline, and has gradually failed since.

The Taylor home was on the North Diagonal road, east of the Platte, and he was counted one of that community's most prosperous and respected citizens. His many friends greatly regret his passing.

Mr. Taylor was 75 years and 2 months old at death. He is survived by one son, Howard [Eliott] Taylor, and by two daughters, Mrs. Bert Hansell and Mrs. Mark Richardson.

Mrs. Evelyn Winslow

Mrs. [Mary] Evelyn Winslow, a 78-year-old resident of 3708 Oklahoma Ave. in Trenton passed away Wednesday, December 2, 1998 at her home.

Funeral services were held December 5, 1998. Burial was in the Resthaven Memorial Gardens at Trenton.

Mrs. Winslow was born on July 25, 1920 at Diagonal, Iowa the daughter of Harry F. [oster] and Christa Mae Hill Woods. She graduated from Tingley, Iowa High School in 1937. On January 11, 1939 she was married to Edgar Winslow at Maryville, MO. He preceded her in death, dying on April 11, 1996. After their marriage they farmed in the Sharpsburg and Lenox, Iowa communities until they moved to Bedford, Iowa where they resided for 15 years. They moved to Trenton in 1963. Mrs. Winslow worked for Dr. Fuson after they moved to Trenton and after he retired she began employment at the Wright Memorial Hospital first in admitting and then after she received her L.P.N. degree she worked as a nurse for many years until she retired in 1996.

Mrs. Winslow was a member of the Trenton First Baptist Church; the Trenton Rebecca Lodge, where she was a Past Noble Grand; the Order of the Eastern Star, where she had served as a Past Worthy Matron; the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Now and Then Club of the Wright Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Winslow is survived by two daughters, Barbara Pfaff of Trenton, MO and Carolyn Ellis of Lamar, MO; a brother, Bill Woods of Gowrie, IA; 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Chuck Woods.
