Laid At Rest

Died, at the family residence, one mile north of Bedford, on Friday, August 24, 1894, at 2:05 o'clock a. m., Susan Carter, wife of C. [oleman] S. Carter, aged 57 years, 6 months and 3 days.

Funeral services were conducted by Elder Wm. Cobb, at the residence, on Saturday, August 25, at 10 o'clock, a. m. Interment was made in the Mohler cemetery east of town. Mr. and Mrs. C.  [oleman] S. Carter were among the early settlers of Taylor County. Mrs. Carter came to Iowa with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Martin [Permelia Jobe], in 1854, and they located on a farm four miles east of Bedford. In 1859 she was united in marriage to C. [oleman] S. Carter, since which time, up to her death, she was a resident of this county. She had a large circle of warm, personal friends, many of whom attended the funeral. She leaves a husband and five children to mourn her loss.

O Mother dear, most bitterly we miss you,

And when we gaze upon your old arm chair

Our hearts bleed as we think of you

To know we never more shall see you there.

How sad we are to know you’ll never darken

The doorway of our once happy home,

When we return no soothing word awaits us.

No smiles from our dear mother’s face to

Come.

But though we sadly mourn the loss dear

Mother

We know our loss to heaven is gain

And that you are with the saints in heaven,

Where never therein shall enter death or

Pain.

Obituary.

Eliza [beth] Cathcart Smith was born May 3, 1836. Lived with her parents until she was married, December 19, 1861, to Martin V. [an Buren] Clute, of Allegheny, California, where they went immediately after their union. They resided there seven years, and then moved to Wisconsin, and from there to Taylor county, Iowa, in 1876. In January, 1902, hoping that her health, which had been failing for the past three years, might be benefited by a milder climate, they went to Wagoner, Indian Territory. She suffered from chronic bronchitis and valvular disease of the heart, and although everything was done that loving care and medical skill could give, the end came very peacefully Saturday morning, May 17, at half past seven, as she sat resting in her room.

The remains were brought to Bedford for interment in Fairview cemetery. The funeral exercises were conducted at the M. E. church Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. T. J. Ream.

She was a faithful wife and mother, and leaves to mourn her loss her husband and six children, Josephine F. [rances], wife of John T. [homas] Lemon, Red Rock, Oklahoma; Nellie V. [irginia], St. Cloud, Minnesota; Levi T., and Fred M.[artin], of this city, Adeline and Gaylord S. [mith], who live at the home in Wagoner; her mother, Mrs. C. Smith, of Brownville, New York; a brother in Minnesota, a sister in California, and seven grandchildren, with many other relatives and friends.

Her whole life was filled with kind and useful deeds, and she was ever ready to help those whom she could reach in time of trouble. She lies at rest in Fairview cemetery, Bedford, Iowa, near the old home.

She is not dead, she is but sleeping,

The cold, cold grave is only

keeping

The dust to dust returning.

Death could not claim the soul

immortal,

While angels from the heavenly

portal

Bent o'er with eager yearning.

Mrs. S. S. Orton Is Dead

Mrs. S. [ylvester] S. [herman] Orton died at her late home in this city on last Saturday morning after an illness of several months duration. Although a constant sufferer for many days, this good lady was a patient sufferer showing much Christian fortitude and while her death was not unlooked for yet it came as a shock for reason that she had appeared much improved only the afternoon before but the improvement only foreshadowed the end of the life work of this good lady. The funeral occurred from the residence at 8:30 Sunday morning, conducted by Rev. Page of the Baptist church, after which the remains were taken to the Santa Fe station for shipment to Bedford, Iowa where they will be laid to rest. Her husband being a member of the local I. O. O. F. the members of the same attended the funeral in a body as a mark of respect for their brother in his hour of sorrow and desolation. The services were also made more impressive by reason of the presence of the entire choir of the Christian Church, which conducted the song service. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to these good folks in this hour of sorrow.

Miranda Jane Greenlee was born Feb. 4, 1841 in Washington township, Erie county, Pennsylvania. Moved with her parents to Taylor County, Iowa in 1868. Was married to J. M. Blackwell July 18, 1872, and was left a widow on Aug. 20, 1890; was married to S. [ylvester] S. [herman] Orton on Jan. 16, 1896. No children were born to either union. In the fall of 1901 she came to Oklahoma, living first at Stillwater, then at Marshall and five years ago moving to Crescent. She became a member of the Baptist church at an early age, uniting with the Baptist church at this place when she first moved here. Two sisters, one brother, a husband and three stepchildren survive her. —Crescent (Okla.) News.
