Mrs.
Orpha L. [isetta] Bix, 77, of New
Market, Iowa died Saturday morning, January 13th at Good Samaritan Care Center
at Villisca where she had been a resident for the past three months.
She
was born November 11, 1918, at McPaul, Iowa, the daughter of William B. and
Edna [May] Chorn Ogden. She
married [George] William
Bix on July 12, 1941. Mrs. Bix was a nurse’s aide at MHI before her retirement.
She is survived by her husband Bill
Bix of the home and three children: Barbara Jean Overman and husband Gerald of Fayetteville, NC; Gary Douglas Bix and wife Janet of Westerville, OH; and Nancy Kay Collins and husband Gary of Lee Summitt, Mo. There are seven
grandchildren. William Ogden of Des Moines, IA is a brother.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, and sister Emma Durlacher.
Funeral
services were held Monday, January 15th at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with
Russ Clark officiating. Burial was in Memory cemetery at New Market, IA.

Hazel
B. Collins, 90 or Clarinda, died
Thursday, January 11, 1996 at Clarinda Municipal Hospital where she had been a
patient since December 31.
Collins was born August 6, 1905 in
Nebraska Township, Page County, to Edmond D. and Mary Susan Arnold Bashor.
She
moved with her family to Taylor County in 1909. The family moved to Oklahoma in
1913 where Collins attended
elementary rural school.
The
family moved back to Taylor County in 1919 after World War I, where she completed
her schooling, graduating from New Market High School in 1924.
After
attending normal schools, she taught in rural Taylor County and later in Siam,
Gravity and New Market.
She
married Howard Collins June 5,
1946, and they lived in New Market. In 1948, the couple moved to Siam.
Collins was a member of the Baptist faith and attended
the Methodist Church close to her home.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; brothers, Arnold, Clyde and Wilbur; sisters, Pearl, Flossie and Julia.
Survivors
include daughter, Rita [Sue] and Ralph Johnson, Lawrence, Ks.; sister, Lucy Howe, Clarinda; sisters-in-law, Agnes Bashor, Lenox; Gladys Bashor, Salem, Or.; brother-in-law, Dale Ingram; nine nephews and three nieces.
Funeral
services were Saturday, January 15 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda,
with Dr. Emmanuel Dass officiating.
Memorials
may be directed to the Clarinda Pubic Library for children’s' books. Burial was
in Dallas Center Cemetery, north of New Market.

Beatrice Cox, age 80, of New
Market, Iowa passed away Sunday, September 26, 1999 at her home. Beatrice was born August 15, 1919 at Kidder, Missouri to Charles
and Iola Karr McMahill. She was a
graduate of Cameron, Missouri High School. August 3, 1941 she was united in
marriage at Cameron, Missouri to J. [ohn] Ralph Cox, who survives.
Beatrice loved gardening and flowers. She was a member of
the Siam Church of Christ.

include her husband Ralph of
the home; son Allen Cox and
wife Glenda of New Market,
Iowa; grandson, Cavin Cox and
wife Lenore of Lamoni, Iowa;
granddaughters, Pam Cox of
Washington, N.C. and Deanna Cox of

her in death were her parents; son Lyle [Kenneth] Cox in 1978 and brother, Kenneth McMahill.

services were held September 29, 1999 at Walker Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda
with Loren Daly and Reverend Dan Wiebesiek officiating. Burial was in the
Washington Cemetery at Gravity, Iowa. Walker Merrick Funeral Home was in charge

IA, died Monday, July 10, 2000, at Bergan Mercy Medical Center, Omaha, NE.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 14, 2000, at
Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Loren Daly officiating. Burial was in the
Washington Cemetery, Gravity, IA. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements.
Ralph was born December 22, 1919, in
Taylor County, near Gravity, IA, to John G. Cox and Lola Kay Frey Cox. Ralph served in the United States Army during World War II. He was united
in marriage August 3, 1941 to [Dorthea] Beatrice McMahill who preceded him in death September 26, 1999. Ralph was a life long farmer in Taylor County. He was a
member of the Siam Church of Christ.

MERRITT FOSTER
There
is a time when life's journey comes to an end. And so it was for [Jacob] Merritt. He passed away at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital at the age of 78
years, 11 months and 24 days.
He
was born May 11, 1910, the son of Samuel [Merritt] and Eldora (Neely) Foster in Page County. On May 15, 1937 he was united in
marriage to Opal [Bernice] Wood.
They shared over 50 years of life together.
He
was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors are his faithful and devoted
wife Opal. Also his brother Ray and sister-in-law Bernice of California; many relatives and friends.
He
was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge of New Market. Farming and raising
livestock was his occupation because he liked being outdoors. He liked to help
his friends and neighbors as long as his health permitted. After failing
health, he enjoyed the many visitors, greeting them with a smile and trying to
make them feel welcome. He will be greatly missed by his loved one and friends.
Services were held at the
Walker-Merrick Funeral Home of Clarinda on April 26 with Rev. Marcia Smith Wood
officiating. Burial was at the Memory Cemetery in Taylor County.

Mrs.
Opal B. [ernice] Foster, 81 of
rural New Market, IA died Thursday evening, January 11, 1996 at Clarkson
Hospital in Omaha following open heart surgery.
She
was born May 10, 1914, near New Market, IA, the daughter of Clarence
[Orville] and Nora Elizabeth Burnham Wood. She graduated from New Market High School in 1931 and taught in
rural schools before her marriage to [Jacob] Merritt Foster on May 15, 1937.
Mr.
and Mrs. Foster farmed southwest
of New Market. Mr. Foster preceded her in death April 24, 1989. She continued to live on the farm until
her death.
Survivors
include two brothers: Orville Wood and Otis Wood, both of New
Market, IA. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
She
was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Funeral
services were held Monday, January 15, 1996 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with
Rev. Marcia Smith-Wood officiating. Burial was in Memory Cemetery at New
Market.

June Mercer, wife of Ray W. [ilber]
Mercer, died of medical
complications on January 18, 1996 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines,
Iowa.
She
was born on June 20, 1926 in Tingley, Iowa to [Lellan] Lee
[Francis] and Iva [Justine] Main Minnick. In 1944, she graduated from Bedford High School and in 1946 was
united in marriage to Ray on
April 27, in Grant City, Missouri.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Elvin Leroy
Mercer in 1975, and two brothers, Victor and Leland Minnick.
In
addition to her husband Ray,
she is survived by four brothers; James Minnick of Puyallup, Washington, Alan Minnick of Mound City, MO., Dan Minnick of Mt. Ayr, IA., and Merritt Minnick of Fortuna, California; and three sisters; Carolyn
Jean Reno of Santa Ana, CA., Lena
Ailene Mercer of Gladbrook, IA.,
and Geneva Templeton of Red
Oak, IA.
Phyllis has many nieces and nephews as well as great
nieces and nephews.
She
will be deeply missed by her family and her many friends and neighbors.
Services
were held on Monday, January 22, 1996 at the Wilson-Watson Funeral Home in
Clearfield, Iowa with the Rev. Alan Rusk officiating. Final resting place is
Athelstan Cemetery in Athelstan, Iowa.

Ray
Wilber Mercer was born on Friday,
February 19, 1926 at the family farm in Taylor County, Iowa. He was the son of Ervin
B. and Lola Judy Rusco Mercer. Ray died peacefully at his home east of Bedford,
Iowa.
Ray was united in marriage to Phyllis
June Minnick on April 27, 1946 at
Grant City, Missouri and to this union, one son, Elvin [Leroy], was born.
Ray was a farmer and he worked for several years at
the Bedford Sale Barn and for Dr. Jim Lucas.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Phyllis on January 18, 1996 and their son Elvin; infant brothers, Ralph [James] and Raymond [LeRoy] and sisters, Catherine Davis and Goldie [Marie] Jackson.
He
is survived by his brother, RC Mercer and wife Virginia of Olympia, Washington, Rexel Mercer of Albion, Iowa, Junior Mercer and wife Ailene and Eugene Mercer and wife Joyce all of Gladbrook, Iowa, Marvin Mercer of Medford, Oregon and Howard H. Mercer and wife Annette of Cowan, Tennessee as well as many nieces,
nephews and a host of friends.
Graveside services were
held Saturday, October 2, 1999 at 1:30 p.m. at the Athelstan Cemetery at
Athelstan, Iowa. Rev. Alan Rusk officiated. Arrangements were handled by
Wilson-Watson and Armstrong Funeral Home of Clearfield.

Ernest
William Nook, son of Herman
and Mary (Marie) Spiegel Nook was
born at Hamburg, Iowa on January 29, 1903 and departed this life on July 12,
1996 at Greater Community Hospital in Creston, Iowa at the age of 93 years 5
months and 13 days.
He
lived on a farm in the Hamburg, Iowa area and grew up in Fremont County where
he attended the public school and the Methodist Church. On March 7, 1926 he was
united in marriage to Wilma Elizabeth Bell. They lived in the Sidney and Hamburg rural area. They moved to
rural Lenox in 1939. He was engaged in farming.
To
this union five children were born: Clifford; Dwight; Glen; Jerold and
Arlene. He faithfully cared for Wilma until her death of ALS (Lou Gehrig Disease) on
May 3,1977.
He
was united in marriage to Lena Stogdill Shepherd on November 17,1979.
He
was preceded in death by his father Herman, mother Mary,
stepfather Louie Mattes, first
wife Wilma, sister Sophia
Driever, brother Albert, stepbrothers George Mattes, Paul Mattes, and Ralph Mattes, half-brother Adolph Mattes, sons-in-law Kermit Barnes and Jerry Steddom and stepson Donald Shepherd.

time with his children and grandchildren.

services were held July 15, 1996 at 2:00 p.m. at Novinger Taylor Funeral Home
in Bedford, officiated by Pastor Audrey Westendorf. Interment was at West Fairview
Cemetery in Lenox, Iowa.

William
B. Ogden was born August 6, 1881
and died at Long Island, New York, August 13, 1945 at the age of 64 years and 7
days. His death followed a heart attack.
He
was married December 10, 1903 to Edna May Chorn. To them three children were born: Mrs. Julius
Durlacher [Emma] of Long Island, New York, Mrs. [George]
William Bix [Orpha Lisetta] of New Market, and William B. Ogden Jr. of Des Moines.
His
body was sent from Long Island, New York to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where funeral
services were held Friday, August 17, 1945. Burial was in the Walnut Hill cemetery, beside his wife who
preceded him in death.
He
was a kind and loving father and will be missed by all who knew him.
Mr.
Ogden is a former resident of New
Market and was well know in this community.

Maxine Kammeyer Peters was born
March 2, 1923 in Slater, Missouri to Walter Fred and Dorie Ann Kammeyer. She died on March 29, 1996 in Des Moines, Iowa,
at the age of 73 years.
Maxine (or Mac, as her many friends called her) attended school in Slater until her
senior year, when she came to Bedford to make her home with her sister Dell and husband Jim Forster.
She
met LaVern, who was also a
senior, and they graduated in 1941. They were later engaged, and after LaVern returned from Europe in 1945, they were married
at Troy, Kansas on June 28th. To this union were born two sons: Randall Lee and Ronald Fred, both of whom graduated from Bedford High School.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, three
sisters: Mae Pearl Sinnett, Margaret
Morgan, both of Slater, Missouri,
and Della Forster of Bedford, a niece Penny Morgan, a nephew Gary Miller, and a grandson Todd Lee Peters.
Survivors
include her husband LaVern Peters of Bedford, son Randall Lee and wife Susan with their
daughter Julie Peters of Des
Moines, Iowa, son Ronald Fred and
wife Cheryl with their son Matthew and daughter Caroline Peters of Shawnee, Kansas. She is also survived by one
sister, Mary Miller of Bedford
and one niece, Vickie Beemer of Bedford. Vickie always had
a special place in Maxine's life; Maxine referred to her
as the daughter she never had.
She
had been employed in clerical work at Cudahay Packing Company, at the County
ASC Office, at the County Recorder's Office, and most recently, prior to her
stroke in 1977, she worked at the O'Bryan Brothers as a seamstress.
She
enjoyed sewing, reading, and spending time with her family. She is remembered
as having been very active in Rebekah Lodge, American Legion Auxiliary, and the
First Baptist Church Women's Circles. She was a very good cook and was called
on many times to make large quantities of chili and vegetable beef soup for
various organizations. When LaVern was USO Chairman for the local group Maxine, assisted by George and Lena Norris, organized
making of chili and obtaining donations of pies in Bedford as a fundraiser. As
a result of those efforts the Bedford American Legion Post received the largest
donations of any Legion Post in the state for the USO.
LaVern, and Maxine of course, were then offered the position of the Post State USO
Chairman the following year to honor their work, a position which they
declined. Maxine was noted as
well for setting funds for anonymous gifts at Christmas time each year for the
less fortunate.
Maxine suffered a severe disabling stroke in 1977. She
then developed rheumatoid arthritis, which further crippled her. She had been
bedfast the last eleven years of which the last three were spent in a specialty
care nursing home in Des Moines.
Maxine will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

GLEN A. SPENCER
Glen
[Arlin] Spencer was born in
Bedford on January 30, 1914. He died on January 11, 1996 at Oak Manor Village
in Largo, Florida. He was 81 years old.
Glen grew up in Bedford, Iowa with five brothers and
two sisters. Glen married Ruth
Croy and in the forties they
moved to Buffalo, New York where their only son, David, was born. Glen worked for twenty-five years as a master diesel
mechanic for Dow and Co.
When Ruth and Glen retired they moved to Largo, Florida where they
lived in a mobile home park. Glen learned to play shuffleboard; he enjoyed
bingo and playing pool. He was handy around the park and was a
jack-of-all-trades who liked helping to fix things for his friends around the
park. Glen was devoted to Ruth and for the last eight years of
her life took loving care of her every need.
Glen was a quiet, simple man who
didn't say something unless he had something to say. Silence was a welcomed
thing, especially if nothing needed to be said. He was a man who loved his
family and was proud of his son David, daughter in law Carol and two grandchildren Karen and Jeffrey.
Glen was preceded in death by his parents, three
brothers, a sister and his wife Ruth.
He
will be remembered by his son David and his family--- Carol, Karen and Jeffrey. He will also be remembered by his two brothers Albert and Galen, and sister Julia Foster,
several nieces and nephews and many friends.
Glen will be missed by many, but we
thank God for Glen's life, for
the dignity and grace which characterized all he did, and for all he gave to
those whose lives his life touched.
Services
provided by the Novinger Taylor Funeral Home on January 19,1996. His final
resting place is Fairview Cemetery.

Glenn F. Thummel
Glenn
Frank Thummel, son of [Charles] Frank and Alice [Elma] (Butts) Thummel, was born July 25, 1914 in Bedford, Iowa. Glenn was a graduate of Bedford High
School in 1931. He attended Northwest Missouri State College for two years and
then transferred to the University of Iowa, where he graduated with a BS Degree
in Business Administration in 1939. Glenn taught in rural schools near his home community to pay his way
through college.
On July 27, 1941 Glenn was united in marriage to Vera Dorothy
Current. Just ten months after their marriage, Glenn was drafted into the U.S. Army. He attended
Officer Candidate School in Miami Beach, Harvard University and Wichita,
Kansas; where he was Assistant Adjutant General of the Base Operations,
Material Command. He received his honorary discharge in 1945. At then end of
WWII, until 1948 Glenn was
employed by Iowa State Department of Health and Welfare. He was with the
Internal Revenue Service in Audubon, Iowa and Council Bluffs, Iowa for the next
eight years, after which he accepted a position at the Savings and Loan
Association in Harlan, Iowa. He served as President and Managing Officer of the
Home Federal Savings and Loan Association of Harlan, which included branch
offices in Red Oak, Panora, Atlantic, Audubon and Avoca, and maintained this
association with Home Federal until his retirement. In addition, he instituted
a tax service in 1966 that he continued for many years after his retirement.
Glenn was a member of the First United Methodist Church
in Harlan where he served as Treasurer and Financial Secretary for over twenty
years; also choir member, Lay Leader and officer in Methodist Men's Club. He
was a member of Kiwanis and served in all the offices, and was Man of The Year
in 1965. Glenn was a member of
the Harlan Chamber of Commerce for thirty years, a board member and 1971 Man of
the Year. He was a member of the Harlan Building Corporation for twenty years;
the Harlan Planning and Zoning Board for twenty-five years, Western District
YMCA Board for ten years, a thirty-four year member of the Masonic Lodge
serving as Past Master and was president and board member of Area 13
Rehabilitation Center. He was a University of Iowa Alumni Association Life
Member, was a board member for twelve years, on the founding committee and
charter member of the Southwest Iowa Mental Health Clinic in Atlantic; a
supporter of various charities including Community Chest, Boy's Clubs of
America, PTA and AFS, and Red Cross. Glenn was professionally involved with Iowa Savings and League
Board as a member and chairman, National Legislative Committee, National Trends
and Policy Committee, various state level workshops and committees, and in
February of 1971, he was Man of the Month of the Iowa State Industrial
Development Commission.
Glenn died Saturday, September 4, 1999 at Omaha,
Nebraska having attained the age of eighty-five years, one month and ten days.
In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Olin and Duane.

Mrs. Nora Wood Has Fatal Heart Attack
Mrs.
Clarence (Nora [Elizabeth] Burnham) Wood, 70, died at Municipal hospital, Clarinda, Saturday evening after
suffering a heart attack at her farm home near New Market.
She
was born near New Market on Nov. 21, 1891, and lived her entire life in that
area, except for two years in Utah as a child. She and Mr. Wood had been married 52 years and were members of the New Market Church of Christ.
Survivors
include her husband, Clarence [Orville]; a daughter, Mrs. Merritt (Opal) Foster, Clarinda; two sons, [William] Orville and [Clarence] Otis, both of New Market; two sisters, Mrs. Roy
(Golda) [Marie] Moore of New
Market, Mrs. Grace [May] Dougherty of
Clearmont; eight grandchildren, one great-grandson.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday, May 8, at two p. m. at the Walker Funeral Home in
Clarinda. Clarence Potter, preacher of the New Market Church of Christ,
officiated. Burial in the Old Memory cemetery.
