Obituary - Mrs. Evaline Pope Muntz

Mrs. Evaline Pope Muntz passed away last Saturday evening at her home in Maryville, Mo., after five weeks of illness.

She was born in Ohio April 13, 1840, and died February 18, 1922, aged 81 years, 10 months and 5 days.

When she was 16 years old she united with the First M. E. church and since that time she has been a faithful Christian.  She always looked on the bright side of life, and was a kind and loving mother.

Those with her to comfort her and care for her during her last hours were her daughter, Mrs. A. L. Bristow, of Bedford, Iowa; her son, Wm. Dofner of Los Angeles, Calif.; her granddaughters, Ethel Muntz and Hazel Clark of Maryville, and Mr. and Mrs. Clyde DeFord and sons Harry and Louis of St. Joseph, Mo.

Services were conducted at the home Sunday afternoon at 3:30 by Rev. O. L. Cud, pastor of the M. E. church and burial at Mt. Auburn cemetery, St. Joseph, Mo., Monday morning at 10:30 o'clock.

The surviving children are: Mrs. A. L. Bristow of Bedford, Iowa; Wm. Dofner of Los Angeles, Calif.; Fred and Emmett Dofner of Omaha, Nebr. and Mrs. A. K. Kahill of Council Bluffs, Iowa.  A brother, J. D. Carethon, of Cullison, Kans., and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Pall bearers were: Donald Bristow and Sammie Dubin of Bedford, Iowa; Clyde DeFord and Robert Hanlin of St. Joseph, all grandsons of the deceased; and Louis and Harry DeFord, of St. Joseph, great grandsons of the deceased.

Mrs. Muntz was at one time a resident of Bedford, and has a host of friends here who regret to learn of her death.

Obituary - Ella Rachel Spurgeon

 Ella Rachel Hindman was born May 1st, 1872, in Tremont County, Iowa.  In early childhood her parents moved to Taylor County where she spent the remainder of her life.  At 18 she united with the Methodist church at Platteville, Iowa.

She was married to Frank Spurgeon February 11, 1914, and departed this life at the home of her sister, Mrs. James Dallison, February 20, 1922.

She leaves to sorrow for her going her mother and two brothers and two sisters.

Prayer was held in the home with the relatives and the burial was in Forest Grove Tuesday afternoon.

David Gant Died Tuesday.

David J. [asper] Gant was born May 18, 1872, on a farm 8 miles west from Bedford, and died at his home in Bedford at 2:30 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 21, 1922.

His parents were Samuel and Mary Almyra Gant, pioneer settlers in Taylor County, Iowa.  He was married October 19, 1893, to Daisy E. [llen] John near Bedford, and to them were born four children, Blanche, Francis and Paul, all now at home, and a son, who died in infancy.  Mr. Gant leaves three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Miller of New Market, Mrs. Anna Bix, and Mrs. Hattie Stewart, and a half sister, Mrs. Caroline Weingarth, and two brothers, S. [amuel] W. [infred] Gant and C. [harles] N. [ewton] Gant, all of near Bedford.

Mr. Gant united with the Christian church at Siam in 1894, moved to Bedford in 1901 and became affiliated with the Christian Church here.

He was a member for many years of the Masonic order.

His wife and children, sisters and brothers have the sympathy of the entire community.

Burial services were held at the home this afternoon, by Rev. Lowe.

Nickell Rites At Gravity

Harlie Nickell, a resident of Gravity and community all of his life, died in Gravity, Sunday, Dec. 24, after a long illness.

Funeral services were held at the Christian church in Gravity at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon.  Rev. Don Peel officiated.   Burial was in Gravity cemetery.

Harlie Nickell, son of B. F. and Mary Ellen Nickell, was born August 16, 1882, and died at the age of 79 years, four months, eight days.

He was married to Olive Hamblin, March 15, 1911.  To this union two sons were born: Homer Franklin, who passed away in 1939, and Horace Lee, in whose home he spent his last days.

He had been a farmer until 1943, when failing eyesight forced him to leave the farm and he moved to Gravity.

He was a member of the Gravity Christian church and served as janitor for several years.  He was a loving husband and father.

Mr. Nickell became ill in 1955 from a series of strokes but continued on his own until August 8, 1961.  He was taken to the Maryville hospital on August 10, where he spent 12 days.  After returning home he was confined to his bed, but was a patient sufferer.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, two brothers, Wade and Lester; two sisters, Elizabeth Melton and Nellie Lee; and a son, Homer.

He leaves his wife, Olive; son, Horace; daughter-in-law, Stella; one granddaughter, five grandsons.

Mrs. Anna Poor Dies In Nebraska

Mrs. Anna Poor of the Blockton community died in Lincoln, Nebr., May 28.  Funeral services were held at the Blockton Methodist church, Thursday afternoon, June 1, with Rev. S. E. Sterrett officiating.  Burial [was] in Rose Hill cemetery at Blockton.

Anna Jane Thurman, daughter of Marion and Mary Thurman was born near Redding, Iowa, October 3, 1877, and died at the age of ü83 years, six months, 29 days.

She grew to womanhood near Redding, where early in life she joined the Christian church.  In 1903 on July first she was united in marriage to Bennie B. Poor and to this union were born nine children, five daughters and four sons.  One daughter passed away in infancy; a son, Ralph, at the age of 19 months; her husband on September 1, 1936; and another son, Harry of Anaheim, Calif., on July 11, 1960.

Surviving children are: Guy Poor of Blockton, Esther Henthorn of Lincoln, Ethel Martin of Indio, Calif., Goldie Poor of Phoenix, Ariz., Mabel Wilkinson of Topeka, Kans., Wayne Poor of Montebello, Calif.  She also is survived by two sisters and five brothers: Jim Thurman of Hatfield, Mo., Albert Thurman of Bolckow, Mo., Dave Thurman of Leon, Frank and Jesse Thurman of Arroyo Grande, Calif., Nancy King of Nampa, Idaho, Rosa Hillhouse of Colorado Springs, Colo.  She also leaves 17 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren.

Most of her life was spent in the Blockton area, but she had lived the past 12 years with her daughter, Goldie, in Phoenix, Arizona.  She had been in poor health the past two years.
