FORMER BEDFORD BOY DIED IN MISSION FIELD- Residents here will remember the Rev. Dudley family that lived here a few years ago during the pastoral of Mr. Dudley in the local Methodist church. The son, Warren Dudley mentioned in the following item, taking from the Villisca Review attended the local high school and was known here.

Warren Dudley, who was formerly a resident of Villisca, died in Chunking, China, March 22, according to a news dispatch from Indianola, Iowa, which appeared in Thursday morning's Des Moines Register. His death was due to blood poisoning. He was the son of Rev. and Mrs. W.M. Dudley of Indianola, the former at one time pastor of the Methodist church in Villisca. He is survived by his wife, his parents, and his brother Harold who is an instructor in Simpson College. He was a graduate of Simpson college and Garret Biblical institute and went to Chicago a Missionary in 1920.

-LOCALS- Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Harsh of Omaha were here yesterday to attend the funeral of his father, E.K. Harsh.

-ATHELSTAN- Mr. and Mrs. E.E.West and son Arthur of Grant City attended the funeral of B.F. Kauble Saturday at Platteville.

-E.K. HARSH DIED: HOME OF DAUGHTER MONDAY

- E.K. Harsh resident of this community for a good many years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Chester Wheelen east of Bedford last Monday March 30th, after an illness of a few weeks. Enlargement of the spleen was given as the immediate cause of his death. Rev.C.E. Moore of Clarksdale, Mo., a minister of the Primative Baptist church of that place, old friend of the family and minister in churches where the Harsh family had attended in years gone by, came up from his home to preach the funeral services. The funeral was held in the Wheelen home Wednesday April 1st and interment made in the Platteville cem.

Following is the obituary as read by the minister at the last rites: Elijah K. Harsh was born in Logan, Ohio on June 14, I841, and died at the home of his son-in-law Chester Wheelen, Bedford, Iowa, on March 30, 1925, aged 83 years,9 months, and 16 days.

He was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Skinner on November 6, 1873 and she preceded him in death 10 years ago. He was not a member of any visable church but was a strong believer in the doctrine of the old school Predestination Baptist and also attended all their services even going into other states to visit their association. He was well versed in the words of Inspiration and was always ready to defend the doctrine advocated by them. We believe that he was a member of the "invisable body that innumerable company, the true and living God. While our loss is irrepairable, we feel our loss in his eternal gain so we commend him into the hands of one who is able to do more for him than we are able to ask, or otherwise worthy to receive.

He leaves to mourn their loss L.W. Harsh, Bedford; W.D. Harsh, of Omaha; F.L. Harsh Bedford; Mrs. C.A. Wheelen and four grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

- LOCALS- Clarence Morgan, left yesterday noon for Cuba, Illinois to spend the funeral of his uncle, William Morgan, who died at his home there the first of the week after an illness from paralysis of several years.

-CONWAY ITEMS- Joseph Owens who had been receiving care at the county home passed away last Monday evening death being caused by a cancer near his ear. His daughter Mrs. Bennett of Kansas City, and nephew, Granville Bennett of Lenox removed the body to the undertaking parlor at Clearfield, and interment was made there. Mr. Owens had passed his 88th birthday.

OBITUARY - LAURA HINDMAN- Laura Hindman was born in Jodavis county, Illinois on the first day of November I836, and departed this life on March 16, 1925 at the age of 88 years, 3 months, and 15 days.

At the age of eight years she came with her parents to Missouri. At the age of 17 years she was united in marriage to Wm. Hindman and to them were born ten children, six girls and four boys. Six of the children and her husband have preceded her in death. Those left to mourn her going are Lauretta Dallison and Clint and Grant Hindman of Bedford and Mrs. Mary Murray of Lenox, Iowa and one sister, Mrs. Martha Stow of Clarinda and one brother John Thompson of Siloam Springs, Arkansas and also four grandchildren.

The funeral services were held from the home in southwest Bedford, Tuesday March 17th, at 2 pm conducted by Rev. G.T. Roberts, and the body laid away in Forest Grove cemetery.

-LIFE SKETCH OF A PIONEER- Neoma A. Turner, daughter of Benjamin M. and Mary A. Hoover was born October 9, 1853 in Lee county, Iowa. When she was an infant, her parents moved to Taylor county, Iowa, where she received her education and grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage with Thomas George Turner on Jan 1,1877. For three years they made their home in Jackson twp. of this county and in the spring of 1880 went to California. After a short stay in Santa Barbara, they settled in Lake county, Calif., first on the Hildebrand ranch and later on the lake shore of Clear Lake in Burns Valley where they were well known and respected residents for a number of years. Mr. Turner passed to the Great Beyond Feb 14, 1916. The following fall Mrs. Turner went to Lorpoc to reside with her sister, Mrs. Zelda Streeter. Needing a change in climate in 1924 she went to Modesto to make her home with her brother, Oswald Hoover. Business affairs called Mrs. Turner back to Lake county where she was taken seriously ill. On the advice of her physician she went to Lane hospital, San Francisco, for a critical operation, after which she was taken to her brothers' home in Modesto, Calif. She passed away Sunday Feb 22, 1925. Mrs. Turner left a host of friends in Lake county where she resided for nearly forty years. She was a leader in social and civic activities in the county, especially at Lower Lake and vicinity. Mrs. Turner united with the Methodist church at Bedford, Iowa when a girl of 16. Those are left to mourn the loss of this dear sister three sisters, Mrs. Orphie Fiester of Washington, D.C., Miss Ella Hoover, Bedford, Iowa; Mrs. Zelda Streeter of Lampoo, Calif., and two brothers, Oswald Hoover of Modesto, Calif., Don Hoover of Quincy, Ill. She leaves also an aged aunt, Miss Amelia Mix of Berkley,Calif., and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. Mrs. Turner was laid to rest beside her husband in Lower Lake cemetery on February 25, 1925. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church of Lower Lake conducted by Rev. A.Y. Skee. Many old time friends were present.

The out of town relatives present were Miss Ella Hoover of Bedford and Mr. and Mrs. Oswald Hoover and son, F.O. Hoover, of Modesto, Calif.

-OBITUARY   -  MRS. IRWIN- Mrs. Margaret Ann Irwin was born in Bruce county, Canada Feb 18, I848 and died at the home of her daughter Mrs. J.G. Posten in Gravity,Iowa on March 7, 1925, aged 77 years and 17 days. She was united in marriage to Thomas Irwin, November 19, I864 and to this union were born ten children, three of whom preceded her in death. Her husband passed out of this life April 10,1912. She leaves to mourn their loss, seven children: Mrs. W.R. Richardson, Mrs. J.G. Posten Mrs. E.J. Dostch, and Will Irwin of Gravity, George Irwin and Jim Irwin of Bedford Rob Irwin of Akron, Colorado, 24 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren also one brother Noble Hargin of Conway, Iowa, one sister, Mrs. Eliza Stewart of Bedford together with a host of friends and neighbors.

She united with the Fairview Christian church a number of years ago and later moving to Gravity, she placed her membership with the Church of Christ here,where she has been a loyal, consecrated follower of her Master. Her faithful Christian spirit has been an inspiration to many.

She was a member of Rebekah Lodge, Gravity, where she was held in high regard, among the fraternity.

Her children were all at her bedside during her illness, and all that loving hands could do to relieve her suffering but to no avail. She called all her children and grandchildren and brother and sister, and their children, to her bedside, and talked to each one separately, and requested them to live such a life, that would enable them to meet her in heaven.- Gravity Independent

OBITUARY - ISAAC SMITH- Isaac Smith was born in Ohio, Aug 27th, 1849 and departed this life at the home of his sister, Mary Cook, of Bedford, March 6, 1925 at the age of 75 years, 6 months, and 7 days.

He was married to Flora Ellen Woolen, Nov 12, 1871 and to them were born 12 children, six boys and six girls. His wife and two sons, Edward and John, preceded him and those left to mourn their loss are Joe Smith of Hopkins, Crystal Clayton, and Alice Henderson of Siam, Harriet Wright of Clarinda, Abe Smith and Lizzie Allen of Wyoming, Sim Smith of South Dakota.

He has 24 grandchildren and six great grandchildren, two sisters, Mary Cook of Bedford, Ruth Ann Carpenter of Nebraska, two brothers Edward of Bedford and Simeon of Wyoming, three half sisters Zorilda Oxley of Siam, Nela Fine of Elmo, Mo., Edna Duncan of Shenandoah; and a half brother, Ira Smith of Siam. He was a member of the Christian church of Siam, and also a member of the Masonic lodge at Siam.

OBITUARY-T.J. EDWARDS- Thomas J. Edwards was born in Henry county, Iowa, March 16, 1843 and died March 7, 1925 in his home near Bedford, Taylor county. He was married to Henrietta Holingsworth in 1863 and she passed away in 1883. To this union seven children were born, Mrs. L.C. Widner, Bedford, Mrs. Laura Smalley, who died in 1924; William H. Edwards of Amhurst, Nebr.; Charles Edwards died at the age of 18, John Edwards died a few years after his brother Chas., Mary Edwards died in infancy, Frank Edwards of Atwood, Kansas, and Joe Edwards of Brush, Colorado.

Deceased moved to Wayne county, Iowa with his family in 1866. In 1883 he moved to Taylor county, where he spent the greater part of his remaining years.

LOCALS- Mrs. Frank Allen started on her return trip to her home in Sheridan, Wyoming Saturday after being here to attend the funeral of her father, Isaac Smith. Her sister Mrs. Harley Wright and son Harley Jr. of Clarinda accompanied her home for a visit.

ATHELSTAN ITEMS- Andrew Smith of Kansas came Sunday to attend the funeral of his father, William Smith.

NEW MARKET ITEMS- Mr.and Mrs. E.O. Douglas returned to their home in Murray,Iowa Saturday after being here for the funeral service of Porter Duncan.

-  The little baby of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Moore passed away Friday morning after a two weeks illness.

SIAM NEWS- Mrs. Frank Allen, Abe Smith, and Sim Smith who were called here by the death of their father, returned to their respective homes Saturday.

RONALD THOMPSON DIED OF PNEUMONIA FRIDAY- Ronald Thompson the 18 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Thompson of south of Bedford, died at his home last Friday after a few days illness from pneumonia. The funeral was held Sunday, March 8th at 2:30 o'clock at the Eagle church. The whole community was saddened to learn of the death of this fine young man and their deepest sympathy goes out to the bereaved family. Following is the obituary read at the services by the minister: Ronald Thompson son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Thompson was born 3 July 1906 and departed this life, March 6th, 1925 age 18 years, 8 months, and 3 days. He was a member of the Church of Christ at Eagle, having confessed his faith in Christ and was buried with Him in baptism at the age of 13 years. He leaves to mourn his parents, three brothers, Paul, Claud and Doyle, three sisters, Arlene, Naomi, and Welma. One sister died in infancy. He was held in high esteem among his many friends and will be greatly missed by them.

LOCALS- Mrs. Bert Taylor of Lenox returned to her home Tuesday after being called here by the death of her nephew, Ronald Thompson.

-  Those from a distance here Tuesday to attend the funeral of T.J. Edwards, were his son, W.H. Edwards of Amhurst, Nebr; Leon Canon of Maryville, Mo. ; Dan Hayes and wife of Randolph, Iowa; J. Sullivan and family of Shenandoah, and Harold Stephens of Shenandoah.

SIAM ITEMS- Mrs. Lizzie Allen and Abe Smith of Sheridan, Wyo., and Sim Smith of Dakota, who were called here by the death of their father, Isaac Smith are spending a few days with relatives.

The many friends of Isaac Smith an old time resident of Siam, an old and old resident of Siam, were very sorry to hear of his death, Thursday night at the home of his sister, Mrs. Mary Cook in Bedford. Mr. Smith had spent most of the 75 years of his life in and near Siam and was a well respected citizen. His wife Ellen Woolen Smith and 2 sons, Edward and John, preceded him many years ago. The ten living children are: Joe of Hopkins, Crystal Clayton and Alice Henderson of Siam, Hattie Wright of Clarinda, Lizzie Allen and Abe Smith of Sheridan, Wyo., Annie Shepherd, Edna Bullock and Steve Smith in Oregon, and Sim Smith in Dakota. All the children were present at the funeral excepting the three living in Oregon. Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ, of which he was a member, on Monday March 9th, at 2 pm conducted by Rev. Price of Bedford. He was laid to rest in Siam cemetery, with Masonic honors, by his home lodge, Plumb lodge, No 285, A.F. & A.M.

GRAVITY ITEMS- Will McCullough died in the hospital at Clarinda last Friday. The funeral was held at the Methodist church last Saturday afternoon at 2:30 Mr. McCullough was a twin brother of Mrs. Henry Burge of Conway.

-  Grandma Irwin, passed away Friday night at the home of her daughter Mrs. J.G. Posten. Her seven children that are living, were all with her during her last illness. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Christian church.

CONWAY NEWS NOTES- Mr. and Mrs. Henry Burge and son Floyd and daughter Orda, drove over to Gravity Saturday to attend the funeral of Mrs. Burge's twin brother, Wm. McCullough aged 66 years, who passed away at the hospital in Clarinda Friday.

-  Mr. and Mrs. G.L. Nixon and children drove over to Gravity Sunday to attend the funeral of her great aunt. Mrs. Margaret Ann Irwin.

- JUDGE WISDOM DIED IN CALIFORNIA- Judge Pierce J. Wilson uncle of Attorney Wisdom of this city, passed away at his home in Escondido, California, Feb 17th, aged 82 years. He came to Ringgold county this state in 1855 and settled near Old Mormantown, now Blockton, la. He was one of the earliest to enlist in the army during the Civil War and served until its close, coming back to Mormantown after an honorable discharge and engaged in the mercantile business there for a number of years. Then he went west to make his home, studied law and rose by hard work and ability to the Judge's bench. He was city recorder and judge of the police court at the time of his death.

The last few years he had been in failing health and finally passed on. He was of staunch character and held in the highest esteem. He was a member of the Masonic lodge and a past commander of the GAR. A large delegation paid tribute to his memory at the funeral held at the Methodist church in home city.

LOCALS- C.S. Orth arrived home Wednesday morning from Monmouth, 111., where he had been to attend the funeral of an uncle, J.E. Orth. He also visited his mother whose home is in Monmouth.

-  Mrs. Caleb Gordon's brother, Newton Collins of St. Joseph, passed away at his home last Sunday morning, from a stroke of appoplexy. The funeral was held Tuesday and Mr. and Mrs. Gordon of this city and their son Earl Gordon of near town, attended the services, Mr. Collins often visited here in past years and will be remembered by many people in this vicinity.

-JEANNE RUTH W0LVERT0N- nine year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arch Wolverton of southeast of Bedford passed away at her home last Monday, March 2nd, after an illness of some length. She had been at Rochester for treatment at the Mayo Brothers hospital and had been given every care in an effort to overcome her ailment. The funeral was held Wednesday forenoon at 11 o'clock at the home Rev. Paul G. Luce of the Presbyterian church of this city having charge of the service. Interment was in the cemetery at Hopkins, Mo.

NEOMA TURNER DIED IN CALIFORNIA SUNDAY- A message has been received   here stating that Mrs. Neoma Turner passed away last Sunday morning at 5:30 in San Francisco, Her sister, Miss Ella Hoover of southest of Bedford has been at her bedside for the past 3 weeks.

OBITUARY- MRS. JANE CHAMBERS - Mrs. Jane Mitchell Chambers was born Aug 23rd 1848, at Waterford, Wis., Attending the local schools she later graduated from the Seminary and taught school for several terms previous to her marriage to Mr. James Chambers of Calhoun county, Iowa, which event was celebrated 4 July 1876. During her lifetime Mrs. Chambers helped to organize several Sabbath schools and was a charter member and trustee of the Auburn Presbyterian church of Auburn, Iowa. Through neighborliness, goodwill and fidelity to the cause of her Lord and Maker hers was a life that enriched every community in which she lived, and although in poor health for some time previous to her death, her interest in the needy and unfortunate never wanted.

Mrs. Chambers forsook this earthly tabernacle Saturday, February 21st, 1925 about 5:00 o'clock pm, leaving to mourn her passing her husband, three sons, John, Royal, and Harvey, and two daughters, DeEtta and Ethel, also a sister, Mrs. Susan Triggs of Beaver, S.D. and three brothers, Gordon, Maxwell, and Royal of Manly, Iowa. Funeral services were conducted at the home Tuesday afternoon by the Rev. Paul G, Luce, pastor of the Presbyterian church of Bedford, Iowa of which Mrs. Chambers was a member and her unchanging faith in the Lord of Glory and most beautifully expressed in the hymns sung by Mr. Guy Thompson and Mrs. Kysar, accompanied by Miss Helen Thompson. Interment was given in the Fairview cemetery, Bedford, Iowa.

LOCALS- Those coming here from a distance to attend the funeral of Mrs. Jane Chambers Tuesday were Mr. and Mrs. M.J. Veile, and Mrs. Laura Corry and Mrs. Fred Roan, all of Des Moines; A.B. Chambers of Waterloo, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Jess Riply and Mrs. W.J. Stennet and Irvie Osburn of Lake City, Iowa, Mr. Frank Buckhiet of Carroll, Iowa.

CONWAY ITEMS- The funeral services for the three weeks old daughter of Mr and Mrs Chas Connor was held from the home Saturday afternoon. The home was filled with friends who sympathize with them in their sorrow.

19 FEBRUARY 1925

- FORMER RESIDENT DIES IN PORT SAID- (long article) Rev. J.H. Scott endeared himself to all who knew him. The Scotts were in Bedford three years and from here they went to Portland, Oregon and after a short time, sailed as missionaries to Japan, under the direction of the Board of the A.B.F.M.S. His son Harold, spoken of in the article above' was born in Bedford, and his daughter Mrs. Wiley, is the little curly headed, black eyed Ora of old. Mrs. Scott preceded him to the other world some ten or more years ago and he later married one of the Baptist missionaries in China, who has been a great comfort and help to him in his work. LOCALS- Chas. Cobb of Oklahoma City, who was called to Savannah, Mo., to attend the funeral of his sister, Mrs. Ed Scott, visited here a couple of days this week with his brother, F.A. Cobb and other relatives.

-  John Swett of St. Joseph is   here to attend the funeral of Mrs. Caroline Reed.

-  Mrs. Caroline Reed 67 years of age died at her home here yesterday Feb 17th. The funeral is being held today and burial will be in the Platteville cemetery.

-  Mrs. William Tame of Hopkins died yesterday Feb 17th. The funeral will be held Sat. at the Methodist church of Hopkins and the interment made in the Hopkins cem.

-CONWAY ITEMS - Jesse Walker was over from Clarinda   _unday evening   bringing the news to Mr and Mrs J.L. Mathews, of the death of his daughter, Mrs. Nettie Thomas who passed away at the state hospital there Sunday afternoon. Arrangements were made to bring her body to her father's home. The funeral services were held from the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon, Rev E.B. Boret conducting the services.
