Taylor County, Iowa obituaries
Huntsman, Leonard Lee was born July 29, 1916,, the oldest son of Ora and Ruth (Hopkins) Huntsman . He was born near Siam, Iowa but moved with his parents north of Bedford where attended country school. He graduated from Bedford High School with the class of 1934. During the depression, jobs were hard to come by. In 1936 his parents decided to go west where they did many things from picking up potatoes and picking fruit to cording wood. Then they heard about the gold fields. Leonard worked in the mines until they closed for lack of finding enough gold. He started panning for gold along the American River. When he felt he could support a wife he came back to Iowa and married the girl he left behind, Inez Robinson, on January 25, 1939, Gravity, Iowa. They visited with friends and relatives a few weeks then returned to California and the gold panning. He later got another mining job that lasted until World War II caused them to shut down, and not long after, Uncle Sam called. Leonard was in several eastern states before being sent to Guam.

When he returned home, Leonard did several things before deciding to go into logging. In the meantime, his three brothers, Lloyd, Donald and Dick were out of service so they formed Huntsman Brothers Logging, where they worked for Michigan-California Lumber for twenty five years. After years of logging, they each chose something different. Leonard came back to Iowa to help his aging parents and started gardening; raising melons and vegetables for sale with his wife working beside him until his health failed him.

Houchin, Betty Muriel Balch Graveside services for Betty Houchin, age 85 of Gravity, who died Saturday, September 5, 2009 at her home will be held Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the Washington Cemetery in Gravity. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 6:30 at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford.
Memorials can be directed to the Sharpsburg Presbyterian Church or the Maple Grove Methodist Church. Memories can be shared with the family at www.ritchiefuneralhome.com. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

Betty Muriel (Balch) Houchin was born in a small stucco house near Savannah, Missouri on September 6, 1923, the daughter of Rosie Sylvia Grace (Hayes) Balch and Hartley Winfield Balch. Betty had one brother, John and a half-sister, Maggie. She finished four years of high school with a ‘straight A average’, and always believed that school was important. Betty met her husband, Cleo Ott Houchin, when he went fishing in the Platte River by Athelstan. The couple dated for several years and were united in marriage on August 9, 1943, in Troy, Kansas. Together they raised their family, being blessed with five children, Cleo Eugene, Carole Francena, Patricia Roseanne, Norman Cleo and Susan Anne. In October of 1949, Betty suffered spinal-bulbar polio. Despite all the odds, she recovered and was determined to ‘go on with her life’, creating and raising a loving and devoted family. She also lovingly cared for Cleo’s needs until he passed away in October of 1994.

Betty greatly enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens. She was a tremendous cook who enjoyed preparing ‘lunch for the men’ (Norman, Shane and Frank) at her farm home where she resided from the day she was married until the day she passed away. Always being a very self-sufficient woman, she refused to have things done for her that she was capable of doing for herself. She was very proud and happy that she could live in her house and provide for herself and her family until the end.

Betty prided herself in her cooking . . . . and for a good reason too . . . her door was always open to anyone who wanted to share some good conversation and a bite to eat. When her grandchildren went to visit, she was always very eager to share a tasty treat with them! She was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, grandma and great-grandma. Her life was blessed with the birth of thirteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren, and she loved spending time with all of them! Betty was a woman with a very strong faith in God, and lived out her faith by being an example to others. Betty was baptized at her home in a small gathering at the age of eighty-five.

Left to cherish the memories of a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend are her four children, Carole Francena Goodlett and husband Bill of Bellevue, Nebraska; Patricia Roseanne Hass and husband Pete of Corning; Norman Cleo Houchin and wife Debbie of Gravity; and Susan Anne Fitzgerald and husband Ron of Gravity; daughter-in-law, Beverly Houchin of Clarinda; thirteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren; and many other family members and friends.

Preceding Betty in death were her parents; her loving husband Cleo; and son Cleo Eugene.

We will hold the memories of Betty’s life as a wonderful gift to the whole family.
She will live on in our hearts forever.

Hoover, Ralph Services for Ralph Hoover, age 93, of Fountain Hills, Arizona, formerly of Coon Rapids and Blockton will be Sunday at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford at 2:00. Burial will be held at the Redding Cemetery in Redding. Memorials can be given in his name. Memories can be shared with the family on our web site at www.ritchiefuneralhome.com under Obituaries. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

Ralph Hoover was born in Blockton, Iowa on December 4, 1913, the son of Charles Edward and Mamie Hoover. Charles and Mamie had an older daughter, Lueva, who preceded Ralph in death at the age of 41.

Ralph graduated from Blockton High School with the Class of 1932 and worked with his father on their farm near Blockton. He entered in marriage with Hazel Helen Walston on October 27, 1935, and continued to farm in shares with his father. His father went on to become deputy sheriff of Ringgold County, Iowa while Ralph and Hazel continued to work the family farm.

One son was born to Ralph and Hazel, Gary Dean Hoover, on December 7, 1938. There are four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

In 1947, Ralph and Hazel moved to Coon Rapids, Iowa where he operated a service station. In 1949, Ralph started a new career as a car salesman, working for Morrie Powers in the Chevrolet dealership in Coon Rapids. This, apparently, was his calling as he worked in this position for thirty years and did very well.

During their fifty year stay in Coon Rapids, Ralph became very active in the community. He first of all served his church faithfully, the First Methodist Church, primarily aw head usher. He served as a councilman on the town council for eight years. He served as a board member on the Municipal Utilities board for twelve years during which several large construction projects were completed for the Coon Rapids utilities.

In 1999, Ralph and Hazel moved to Arizona to be closer to their son, Gary, and to enjoy the warm and dry climate. While in Coon Rapids, Ralph worked hard on maintaining his house and adjoining yard. It was quite fitting then, that their place in Arizona was right next to a golf course where Ralph could enjoy the green grass each day but not have to work hard maintaining it.

In October of 2004, Ralph and Hazel had a formal restatement of their vows to mark their 69th wedding anniversary. This touching love story was featured on TV news networks around the nation and in Glamour magazine.

On January 31, 2007, Ralph succumbed to the debilitating effects of Parkinson’s disease and pass away quietly.

She lived in Boulder until 2003 when her health began to fail and she moved to live with her niece, Marilyn in Larkspur, Colorado. While living with her niece, she kept in contact with her friend Maxine Leonard (Heide) with weekly phone calls.

Vadna was a very quiet person who enjoyed keeping up with her family and hearing what was happening in each person’s life. All three sisters were very close and kept in touch with frequent letters and phone calls. Vadna also enjoyed traveling to see her family; she and Ruth took a trip to Colorado and California with their Uncle Will and Aunt Bertha Murr, she traveled to Iowa with her sister Anna almost every summer to see their sister Ruth and family. Vadna and her niece Marilyn went to McAllen, Texas for Christmas time family reunion with her sister Ruth, brother-in-law Robert, and their daughters and grandchildren. She especially enjoyed getting to see all of Robert and Ruth’s family at one time which she had never done before. Then again in 2004, she was able to spend Christmas with Ruth and Robert, this time in Bedford where the whole family was gathered. This Christmas gathering became somewhat of a tradition as she traveled with her niece Marilyn to Tulsa, Oklahoma the next three years to celebrate with the family.

She left school to help out with finances at home where, with the help of her mother, she learned to be an excellent cook and dessert maker. Her niece, Pauline Miller, can remember a table loaded down with goodies when they went to Aunt Hazel’s for Sunday dinner. As a teenager, Hazel and her best friend, Zelda Frame, were baptized into the Methodist faith in Clearfield.
