Adam L Whitehead

My G-G Grandfather

By Joyce Whitehead Orr

Adam L. Whitehead was the son of John and Hannah Reinbolt/Rainbolt Whitehead

The following was taken from the Widows Claim for Pension papers: On this 27th day of July A.D. 1865 personally appeared before Mr. W.D. Culver Justice of the Peace a Court of Record within and for said county Susannah Whitehead aged 38 years, a resident of 17th District, in the county of Greene, and State of Tennessee, who being first sworn according to law, doth, on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress approved July 14, 1862.......That she is the widow of Adam L Whitehead who was a 1st Lieutenant in Company "k", commanded by Captain B. Smith, in the 1st Regiment of Tennessee Calvary, commanded by Col Robert Johnson in the war of 1861. That her said husband died at Gallipolis, in the State of Ohio on the 21st day of November A.D. 1862 of fever contracted while in the line of duty in the service of the United States. In January of 1869 the following paper from the Treasury Dept was filed stating: By the Inventory of Effects on file with said Settlement it appears that Adam L Whitehead died of Typhoid fever at the General Hospital, Gallipolis, Ohio, on the 26th day of November 1862. Another Widows Application paper states that Adam died of Bronchitis. It states that Susannah post office address was Clear Creek which lies 18 miles north of Greeneville, Tenn. Susannah left her X on these papers.

Adam married Susannah Pratt on Nov 5, 1848 in Greene Co. TN. Adam died Nov 21,1862 (or Nov 26, 1862) and Susannah died April 2, 1875.

Children of Adam L and Susannah

John b. Aug 7, 1851

William Kylais (WK) b. April 11, 1857 d. April 22, 1924

James Marcus b. May 31, 1861 d. Jan 15, 1928

Mary Emeline b. May 21, 1858 d. ( I read on a paper that stated Mary E Smith, could this be her married name?)

Hannah Eliza unknown Widows claim for Pensions papers do not show her as a minor when they were filed in July of 1865. To be a minor a child must be under 16 years of age..

The 1860 Greene Co. Graysburg District 17 census. (TN) lists the following: Mary Emeline was listed as Emeline and she was two yrs old, Wk listed as 6 years. They had a sister named Hannah Eliza who married a William Wine . She was 12 in the 1860 census.( I have seen a paper signed Hannah Eliza Wains, also seen a paper listing her birth as Nov 1, 1847.)

Note: I have found that some dates of birth and death are different on different papers.
