Dispatcher Sends Rescue Crews to Wrong Store

A metro family reacts to a Channel Six exclusive. Mike McKnight uncovered a mistake made by a Pottawattamie County dispatcher who sent rescue crews to the wrong No Frills even though the caller told her the right one. The man who needed medical help -- died.

Nathan Juelsgaard died last month of an aortic aneurysm. He collapsed inside a Council Bluffs grocery store. He was just 32-years old.

"This is a picture of Daddy isn't it?" said Nate's mom Becky Hansen of Treynor, Iowa.

We met with his mother and two of his three children to talk about a mistake involving Nate's medical call.

911: "What's the address of your emergency?"
Caller: "Um. It's No Frills on Valley View Drive."
911: "OK. What's going on?"
Caller: "I have a guy who passed out."

It's January 26, 10:39 in the morning. A minute-and-a-half after 911 received that call, an engine and medic are on the way. Everything seems to be operating smoothly.

Council Bluffs emergency crews arrived at No Frills in less than five minutes from the initial phone call and the victim is still breathing.

But there's a problem. Paramedics can't find him. That's when the 911 operator asks the caller a question.

911: "Sir?"
Caller: "Yeah."
911: "What No Frills are you at?"
Caller: "On Valley View Drive."
911: "OK."

911 sent emergency crews to the wrong No Frills. While Nate Juelsgaard was struggling to stay alive near Valley View Drive -- rescue crews were four miles away -- at the No Frills on Broadway.

Once the dispatcher realized her mistake, she sent crews who were much closer. They arrived in two minutes. Having the right address would have saved six minutes.

"It really upsets me because I had no idea. We were both at the hospital waiting for the ambulance," says victim's mother Becky Hansen.

So what went wrong? When there's more than one business with the same name, an options box pops up on the 911 computer. The operator never asked the caller to verify the address which is against protocol.

The 911 tapes show he told her the right location but she sent rescue crews to the other.

"The seriousness of the situation is obvious. Whether or not the man could have been resuscitated is not for me to say," says Pottawattamie County 911 Director Andrea Schaffer.

The family of Nate Juelsgaard hopes that two things can be learned -- the importance of CPR and double-checking addresses in an emergency.

"Of course it's upsetting for me to think they could have been there in 2-minutes, but ultimately we feel Nate's condition was such that it really didn't make a difference," says Hansen.

Since protocol was broken, the operator who made the error has been given serious disciplinary action but we haven't been given specifics.

The Nate Juelsgaard family is holding a fundraiser next Friday night -- March 5 at Whiskey Roadhouse in Council Bluffs to put away college money for his three children.

Fundraiser to Celebrate Life of "Big Deal"

It's a tragedy Channel Six first reported last week, after a man collapsed inside a super market, 911 dispatch sent rescue crews to the wrong No Frills Supermarket location. Thirty-two-year-old Nathan Juelsgaard died of an aneurysm, and although his family says the delay in help might not have made a difference, it's still a heartbreaking story. Friday friends and family gathered to celebrate his life with a fundraiser.

"There's nothing you can say about him, to know him was to love him," said Nate's brother, Chris Juelsgaard.

Words are still hard to come by for the family, who is reeling from the loss. "Nate had a huge heart," said Chris. "Someone once said that people are judged not by how much you love, but by how much people love you, and obviously tonight we're expecting 1200 to 1500 people so it's pretty much evident."

The community gathered at Horseshoe Casino to celebrate Nate's life. Shirts declaring Nate as a "big deal" were worn by all family members.

"It just was a joke that he told, and so it started out he would say that to all of our family, whenever we needed something done, he'd say 'I know people, I'm kind of a big deal,'" said Melissa Hansen, Nate's younger sister.

It's obvious he was a big deal. In his short life, Nate touched countless people. "In a room full of people, everybody thought they were Nate's best friend, and that's just the way he made you feel," said Hansen.

Many of those people showed up Friday night, to support the family. There was a silent auction with about 170 prizes, as well as a free will donation. All the proceeds will go to support Nate's three kids.

"It's for the children, just to benefit their college funds and help them to get back to a somewhat normal life," said Nate's mom, Becky Hansen.

"It's just a big loss, we had a tragedy and this is just an opportunity to celebrate his life," said DJ Layson, a co-worker of Nate's.

Layson spearheaded the effort for the fundraiser. "Nathan was a big Iowa fan, and I guarantee they'll probably win a national championship next year because if he has anything to do with it up there, it's not going to be long before it happens," said Layson.

Although Nathan's wife, Amy, wasn't ready to go on camera, she did have a message she wanted to share. "Amy wanted me to just thank everyone so much for everything that's just been amazing, the out pour of generosity and just kindness toward her and the children," said Becky.

Although he is gone too soon, his friends say he will never be forgotten. "He made the best of it," said Layton. "We'll be talking about him forever, we'll be talking about Nathan forever."

There is a fund set up at Treynor State Bank in Treynor Iowa under the name: "The Nathan D. Juelsgaard Family Fund." For information on how to donate contact the bank. For a link to their website click here.

Phyllis I. Klindt - Age 78

Phyllis Irene Klindt was born on December 21, 1931, to Edward and Lydia (Sander) Schroder in rural Avoca, Iowa. She attended the Avoca schools and graduated with the Class of 1949.

She was united in marriage on February 4, 1950, to Max Klindt at her parent’s home in rural Avoca. Four daughters were born to this union: Virginia, Charlene, Marjorie, and Bernitta. She was right beside her husband in every aspect of the farming operation and raised their four daughters with such a loving touch. Phyllis devoted so much time to her grandchildren. She spent hours playing with them, and teaching them her art of sewing and baking. When the great-grandchildren came along, she was still down on the floor playing with them as she did with her grandchildren. Her love for her family was unconditional.

Phyllis was a long-time member of the Altamont Baptist Church serving in several different offices, including Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, youth group leader, and the women’s group. She was on the auxiliary board at the Baptist Home in Harlan, which included being in charge of the annual soup supper. Phyllis spent many hours working with her hands, including quilting, crocheting, embroidering, canning and baking. Many of the crocheted name plaques found their way all over the United States. Phyllis loved the outdoors, and spent many hours in her flower beds, garden, strawberry and berry patches, and caring for the many trees and bushes she planted over the years. She loved lawn mowing so much, that even in the last year when challenged by her health she would be found out on the lawn mower.

Max and Phyllis have taken several farm tours, traveled through forty-eight states and seven different countries.

Phyllis died on Sunday, January 24, 2010, having attained the age of seventy-eight years, one month, and three days. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Gorden.

She is survived by her husband of sixty years, Max Klindt of Avoca, Iowa; daughters: Virginia and her husband Don Bubke of Avoca, Charlene and her husband Ron Ruffcorn of Avoca, Marjorie and her husband Jim Bojanski of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Bernitta and her husband Robert Goettsch of Avoca; thirteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brothers: Lenard Schroder and his wife Annabelle of Atlantic, Iowa, Loren Schroder and his wife Elaine of Avoca, and Marvin Schroder and his wife Carole of Walnut, Iowa; sister-in-law Janiece Schroder of Oakland, Iowa; other family members and many friends.

Rev. Dianna Holland officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa, on Saturday, January 30, 2010. Honorary casket bearers were Stephanie and Brian Geraghty, Kristi and Robert Regenwether, Justin and Tamara Piittmann, Angela and Jason lauritsen, Nickolas and Lisa Ruffcorn, Robert and Dorota Widick, Jennifer and Eric Beckman, Jeremiah Ruffcorn, Kelly and Fran Schant, Jeffrey Goettsch, Jennifer Goettsch, Dana Bojanski, and Dean and Jana Bubke. Interment was held at Cuppy’s Grove Cemetery in rural Harlan, Iowa.

ONAWA, Iowa -- Joseph William Langenfeld, 77, of Onawa died Monday, March 29, 2010, at his home surrounded by the love of his family. God called him home after a long encounter with cancer.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Catholic Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Patrick O'Kane officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Joe W., son of William and Ludvina (Kohles) Langenfeld, was born Sept. 1, 1932, in Earling, Iowa. He was baptized at St. Joseph Catholic Church. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in Earling in 1950. After honorably serving his country in the army, Joe returned to Earling and began his career as a modern-day blacksmith and repair man.

Joe was united in marriage to Anne Goblirsch on Oct. 23, 1954, in Dunlap, Iowa. Through this union, God chose to richly bless them with 11 children. His children, in turn, blessed Anne and him with 43 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Looking for a change, and setting his sights on new horizons, Joe moved his family to Onawa in 1975 to embark on a new career as an engineer with Westendorf Manufacturing where he continued to work until February 2010.

He found his spiritual home and nourishment in the faith community at St. John Catholic Church where he was an active liturgical minister and member of the Knights of Columbus. Joe achieved the rank of 4th Degree Knight, an honor he most cherished. He also enjoyed and grew with the local ecumenical bible study group in the Onawa area that he joined in his later years. Joe's faith was his most precious gift.

Always young and mischievous at heart, his generous spirit was often felt both within the church community, as well as the community at large. Ever the inventor and "tinkerer," he enjoyed the challenge of bringing new ideas to life. He was well known for giving a "second and third life" to what many considered throw-away junk. These "adventures in creativity" often brought a smile and laughter to the many who benefitted from them.

Joe's creativity and inventiveness were matched only by his love of playing cards, dice and games with his family and friends. He always gambled on his partners and the blind, and good fortune always seemed to smile on him.

His playful nature aside, Joe was passionately pro-life, not only by the witness of his family life, but also by his unfailing dedication to the cause of the unborn in the public arena. The belief that life is a gift from God was not lost on him.

Joe leaves behind his wife, Anne of Onawa; his children, Thomas (Sue) Langenfeld of Sullivan, Ill., Linda (Lew) Wolf of Hillsboro, Ore., Jeanne Mikesell of Seattle, David (Patrice) Langenfeld of Pella, Iowa, Dennis (Colleen) Langenfeld of Monument, Colo., Kenneth (Pam) Langenfeld of Wellsville, Kan., Julie (Jeff) Nelson of Kenosha, Wis., Joanne (Mark) Maynard of Rodney, Iowa, Sharon (Larry) Provost of Des Moines, Iowa, Paul Langenfeld of Unterammergau, Germany, and Alan (Carol) Langenfeld of Champaign, Ill.; 43 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Marie (Francis) Graeve, Delores (Joe) Jacoby and June (Arthur) Assman; a brother, Robert (Carole) Langenfeld; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Rita (Melvin) Schechinger and Gladys (Emmett) Dolan; a brother, Mello (Kate) Langenfeld; and two grandsons, Matthew (Thomas) Langenfeld and Stephen (Linda) Wolf.

Heaven has been blessed by his passing, and his family looks forward to the day when they can join him in the eternal joy of praise for his creator.

William O. Lewis - Age 88

William Ouren Lewis, the son of William Jackson Lewis and Bernice Ann (Ouren) Lewis, was born on October 6, 1921, in Harlan. He graduated from Harlan High School with the class of 1939. Bill continued his education at Grinnell College in Iowa, and then transferred to Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where he lettered in track and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1943.

After enlisting in the US Marine Corps, Bill was commissioned as a first lieutenant and sent to the South Pacific. For fifteen months he saw action on the island of Peleliu, now remembered as the site of one of the most brutal battles of WW II. Bill was in charge of bomb disposal on the island and was promoted to captain while he was there. He continued to be active in the US Marine Corps Reserves, rising to the rank of major.

Bill completed his law degree at the University of Iowa in 1948, and was soon after united in marriage to Jacquelyn Jean Luther of Memphis, Missouri on July 18. Three children were born to this union: Rebecca, Jeffrey, and Constance.
