The Elk Horn Lutheran Church "was officially organized April 25, 1876 and services were held in homes or school houses. In 1878 a Folk High School building was completed and services were held in the upper story. By 1883 a church was built and a cemetery laid out on the property." (From the Past and Present of Shelby County, Iowa, sponsored by Shelby County Historical Society, Volume III 1916-1976, pg. 88.)
