SONS OF TEMPERANCE.

The order of the Sons of Temerance was established in Davenport,on the 5th day of October, 1847, by the organization of Scott Division, No. 1.

The organization was effected by a dispensation of the NationalDivision of North America to T. S. Battelle, the then acting Deputy for theState of Iowa.

At the institution of this Division, H. Price was elected W. P.,and Enos Tichenor, W. A., and operations were commenced in the loft of an oldschool house, with a membership of eleven.

The prejudice existing in the minds of many good men againstSecret Societies, has exerted an influence unfavorable to the success of thisSociety, but notwithstanding the oppossition from this and various othersources, Scott Division has continued to increase in numbers and in interest, having during the time that has elapsed since her organization, enrolled thenames of hundreds  among her members and marshaled them to the contestagainst the great enemy of the human race.

It is worthy of remark that the first prohibitory Liquor Law ofthe State of Iowa was drawn up by a member of this Division, and the printingand speaking, and writing, and lobbying necessary to secure its passage throughthe Legislature, was done by members of this Division.

The meeting nights of this Division from the commencement hasbeen Friday, and whether the place has been attractive or otherwise, the timehas been strictly observed and no omission suffered to mar the record.

This Division has furnished three G. W. P.'s and two G. Scribes;but the brightest feature connected with her history is the fact that at thepresent time there are many men included in her membership who have beenliterally taken from the gutter and restored to their families, to usefulnessand respectability, and who but for this organization would be fillingdishonored graves, or, if living, be a disgrace and a curse to themselves andthe community.

At the present time the Division occupies a splendid room onBrady between Front and Second streets; is free from debt, and has money in herTreasury.
