JOHN H. STEVENS.
Mr. Stevens was born April 13, 1803, in Milesburg, Centre County, Pennsylvania, and was a descendant of the first families of the "Pennsylvania Dutch” of the Keystone State. He received but a common school education and worked in the blast furnaces. During the spring of 1855 he emigrated to Scott County and settled in Princeton Township, and began to work for Giles Pennio on a farm. He remained in Princeton Township for about five years, when he pur chased the land in Winfield Township on the "Wapsi” river, which his son Daniel now owns. In 1869 he helped build an iron bridge across the "Wapsi” river, which was the first bridge ever constructed across that body of water. During his residence in Scott County he was noted as a progressive, hard-working citizen, and a man well liked by all his neighbors.

He was united in marriage to Miss Catherine Huntzburger, to whom ten children were born, four boys and six girls. Mrs. Stevens, who is now eighty years of age, is enjoying good health for one of her age. Mr. Stevens died November 10, 1892, after a short illness.
