CHARLES F. RENZON.

As an example of persistent effort in the line of an honorable purpose, the history of Charles F. Renzon's life is well worthy of record. A man of modest mien, quiet and unassuming, he has by dint of his own efforts worked his way from humble circumstances to an honorable position, and lives in the enjoyment of an ample competence, the fruit of his own industry, perseverance and business thrift.

He is a native of Holstein, Germany, and was born October 30, 1825, the son of John C. Renzon, who came to the United States in 1847 and who died in 1859. Ile was a brickmason and contractor. Charles received an ordinary education in his native land and there learned the painter's trade, giving special attention to carriage painting, in which he became an expert. He remained in Germany following his trade until 1849, when he came to this country and settled in Davenport. There he at once found employment, and became known as a master workman. He conducted a thriving business and by his industry and thrift accumulated some capital, and after continuing to work at his trade until 1875, he established a wholesale and retail paint business, which has steadily increased from year to year, until it has reached large proportions and yields him a handsome income. Mr. Renzon is widely known for his careful and correct business methods, and enjoys the confidence and esteem of his business associates. He is a man of fine social qualities and in his family and among his intimate friends is a most agreeable and entertaining companion.

He is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and also belongs to the Ancient Order of United Workmen of America. In politics he is a Democrat, but has never cared to take any more prominent part than to discharge the duties incident to good citizenship.

On August 1, 1819, he married Miss Julia Podey, a native of Mecklen burg, Germany, by whom he has four children, viz: Dora, the wife of Mr. William Ruge of Milan, Illinois; Rica, the wife of Mr. James Carroll of Rock Island; Charles W., who married Miss Katie Hart and lives in Davenport, and Lena, who lives at home.
