HARVEY LEONARD JONES.

Harvey Leonard Jones, though comparatively a young man, has reached an honorable station among the leading citizens of Scott County and is one of the popular and progressive men of the County.

He is a native of Davenport and was born on January 10, 1857, the son of Elisha and Julia Ann (Jeffries) Jones, both of whom were natives of Pennsylvania.

Harvey received a good common school education, and after leaving school turned his attention to any honest employment that he could obtain to earn a livelihood. In 1880 he became turnkey at the Scott County Jail and served in that capacity two years. During the following eight years and until 1890, he filled the office of deputy sheriff, after which he was elected on the Democratic ticket sheriff of Scott County, and reëlected in 1893. Mr. Jones is an efficient public officer, and through his official career of fourteen years has demeaned himself in such a manner as to command the confidence and esteem of his fellow-citizens of all classes. His geniality and kindliness, with his open- hearted generosity and love of good fellowship, make him a popular man, while his manly bearing, his firmness and adherence to the right, have won for him universal respect.

On January 17, 1889, he married Miss Laura, a daughter of Charles and Christie (Gerts) Priester. Mr. and Mrs. Jones have two children: Charles A. and Mav C. Jones.
