He received a common school education in Scott County, which was supplemented with a classical course at Maquoketa Academy and Mount Morris (Illinois) Seminary, after which be took a commercial course at the Bryant & Stratton College of Chicago. After leaving school he engaged in the fire insurance business for many years and then returned to the farm, where he remained until 1885, when he was appointed postmaster of Princeton under President Cleveland. He was reappointed under the present administration, and during his entire career as postmaster there has never been an inspector from the postoffice department in his office.
