MACHS students performon European music tour

Area music students on the Iowa Ambassadors of Music European tour where students spent 16 days in a whirlwind tour of Britain, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Germany earlier this summer.

Jessie RICKER, Sarah CAMPBELL and Christiana OVERHOLTZER from Mount Ayr Community high school performed with the Ambassadors Choir on the trip.

Hannah MARCUM and Rebecka CARPENTER from Bedford Community high school and Taylor MAYNE from East Union Community high school performed with the Ambassadors Band.

Going along, as advisors were Greg and Crystal STORHOFF, who also performed with the choir.

These local students were part of a select group from across Iowa.

The 2012 tour was a 19-day event that included three days of rehearsal in Grinnell with a farewell concert on campus on July 3. The Ambassadors then had a 16-day concert tour covering England, France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Italy and Liechtenstein. The students performed concerts in each country except Liechtenstein.

Directing the band was former Hawkeye band director Dr. Morgan JONES, and the choir director is former Wartburg choir director Dr. Paul TORKLESON.

Iowa Ambassadors of Music tour Europe on alternate years. To be considered for membership in IAM, students must be recommended by their school music teachers as having superior music skills and possessing high character. After this initial recommendation, the students are contacted about the opportunity to participate as an Iowa Music Ambassador.

The students performed in either the band or choir on the tour. Nearly 60 advisors accompanied them.

The Iowa Ambassadors of Music have toured Europe in 1988, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010. In past years Mount Ayr Community area students have been on several tours.
