Mount Ayr high school reunion

The 2009 Mount Ayr high school reunion was held Saturday evening, May 23, 2009, in the school commons. The invocation was given by Helen SCHARDEIN from the class of 1937 to open the reunion. The meal was served by Kathy COMER to 126 graduates and guests.

Margaret BISHOP from the class of 1949 extended a welcome to the graduates and guests in attendance. Loren ELLIOTT from the class of 1941 and now living in Mesa, AZ shared memories of his high school days in Mount Ayr. Mr. ELLIOTT played football under coach Harry KNAPP and told of traveling to a game at Leon by car driven by Coach KNAPP. There were very few boys out for football at that time and he was one of the smaller players and was quite intimidated by the larger players at the other school. Mr. ELLIOTT was impressed with the scholorships that are being given to graduates now.

Ruth ANGUS from the class of 1934 was honored for graduating 75 years ago. Mrs. ANGUS shared memories and pictures of her years as a student in the Mount Ayr school. One of the highlights of her school days was the first band uniforms for the band. Mothers of band members made capes for each member to wear with white pants, hats and gloves. The band was very proud to have uniforms to wear.

She told of the small amount of training required to become a school teacher. One of the first schools she applied to teach at did not hire her because they felt the male students were too big for her to handle. Mrs. ANGUS shared records that gave the amount of pay teachers received at that time and the numbers of subjects they were required to teach. She also told about girls P.E. classes playing basketball in the old basement gym.

The class of 1959 was honored for graduating 50 years ago. Those present to celebrate this milestone were Judy (BECK) HUFF, Norma Lee JONES, Phil RICHMOND, Bob JONES, Barbara (STUCK) BOWER, Raymond STANLEY, Norma (HOHLFELD) LYNCH, Lou (REYNOLDS) CHURCH, Jan (STRINGHAM) STILL, Mary (JARVIS) FETTY, Karolyn (SMITH) HERREN, Jerold DRAKE, Lyle MAIN, Ed JONES, Jim BURGE, Leland RAUCH, Edie (OLENY) HENSLEY, Marilyn (DAVENPORT) PRITCHETT, Carroll HUFF, Judy (KEPLINGER) MERCER, Virginia (TAFT) REYNOLDS, Theona (HOFFMAN) WILBURN, Rosalie (BEEDE) HURGON and Robert and Martha (SICKELS) PALMER.

Celebrating their 70th graduation anniversary were Jack and Vera MOORE from the class of 1939. Graduating 65 years ago in 1944 were Virgil MAIN, Thelma and Bill RUSK, Neil JOHNSTON and Theola WEEDA. Graduating 60 years ago in 1949 were Margaret and Laurance BISHOP, Iona TRIGGS and Shirley SANDAGE. Graduting 55 years ago in 1954 were Rose JAMES, Jeanette QUICK and Janet HICKMAN. The latest graduate present was Susie CATANZARETI from the class of 1978.

Janet HICKMAN reported on the $75 scholarships presented at the senior awards day to Tara ADAMS, Cassady HOSFIELD and Ashlie GREENE. A freewill offering was taken to add to the scholarship fund for 2010.

Marilyn JOHNSON announced that Mari McGEHEE will servce as secretary/treasurer in 2010. Rose JAMES will continue to serve as president. A volunteer to act as vice president is still needed. Please contact Rose JAMES if you can help with the reunion.

The evening closed with the group singing the old school song, "March Forever On," and the new "Raider Fight Song." After reminiscing, the group departed to meet again next year to renew old friendships. The next reunion will be on May 29, 2010.
