The Mount Ayr Sparks drill team won the state championship in the novelty division in competition held recently at the Iowa State Drill Team Dance Championships in Des Moines. This is the first time that they have competed in the novelty division.

"We had a circus theme," reported coach Kris Quick. "In the dance we had a circus tent and a ringmaster stand. Ashton Quick was the ringmaster of the dance, Allison Wallace was the lion and Kirsten Dolecheck was the lion tamer, Sadie Frost was the firewalker, Clowns were Megan Warin and Laura Davison, and Haylea England was the tightrope walker."

Amber Martin from Norwalk was the choreographer for this routine.

"The girls enjoyed this routine a lot and were so excited to have received first," said Quick.

This makes the third state championship the Sparks have won in the ast three years - two in pom and this one in novelty.

Six judges from across the nation judged the event.
