OBITUARY ~ BERNICE VIOLA (BRUNER) WILEY

Bernice Viola Bruner, the second child of Daniel and Blanche Bruner was born July 12, 1903 on the family farm west of Clearfield in Taylor County, IA. She departed this life April 3, 1998 at the Clearview Home in Clearfield, IA at the age of 94 years, 8 months and 22 days.

She was raised on the family farm and attended "Cornbread College". She became a member of Greenwood Church at an early age later joining the Methodist Church.

Bernice took a correspondence sewing course, going to people's homes doing their seasonal sewing. Later she served as office assistant to Dr. Little in Clearfield. She furthered her education in Des Moines to the position of laboratory and x-ray technician. Later she worked for Dr. Coakley, Reed, and Moore also in Osceola, Mt. Ayr and Creston hospitals.

Bernice and John Wiley were married September 10, 1934. They eloped and kept their marriage a secret for a time because only one member of the family could be employed during the Depression. They moved to the farm southwest of Clearfield where they made their home while their children, Janice Jo, Jacqueline Jean and Bill were growing.

Due to John's poor health, Bernice cared for him and elderly people in her home.

They then moved to Colorado and Arizona, returning to Iowa following John's death in 1960.

Bernice worked at Creston hospital until she retired at the age of 74. She then took up golfing, assisted teaching the residents at Taylor County home and enjoyed planting her garden and flowers.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children Janice Jo Rong (husband Bill); Jacqueline Timmons, all of Des Moines; Wilbert (Bill) John Wiley (wife Sharon) of Albert City, IA; a step daughter, Joan Owens of Clearfield, IA; nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; a brother Fred Bruner of ClearficH. IA, three sisters Ruth Sundell of Lenox, IA; Mildred Matthews and Helen Lyddon of Clearfield, IA; and sister-in-law Velma Scott of Des Moines, IA.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two sisters and one grandson.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 6, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church at Clearfield, IA with the Rev. Alan Rusk officiating.

Music was provided by Patty Parrish and Deb Briggs. Casketbearers were Scott Rong, John Rong, Bill Rong, Edd Timmons, Troy Wiley, and Matthew Wiley.

Interment was in the Clearfield Cemetery at Clearfield, IA.

Wilson-Watson and Armstrong Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
