OBITUARY ~ MRS. O. C. VARNER
Nina Rebecca, daughter of John R. and Alice ABARR STEPHENS, was born June 8, 1889, near Redding, where she grew up and
She was married April 5, 1908 to Omer Clay VARNER of Delphos where they established their home and
where their five sons were born, Charles Spurgeon, Franklin Clay, John, Paul and Alvin.
Mr. VARNER was principal and later
superintendent of the Delphos school until 1930 when the family moved to Diagonal where he assumed similar duties in the
Diagonal school system. They moved to Mount Ayr in 1946 when he joined the Mount Ayr school, retiring in 1952. They made
their home on their farm near Delphos from 1954 to 1958 when they moved to Clearfield.
She cared for her husband
during the 14 years of his illness and following his death March 13, 1966 and continued in her own home until 1974. Her
long, active, and useful life came to a close April 19, 1979 at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa. She would have
been ninety years of age in June of this year and her lifetime attitude of self-reliance was yet evident in the final
Preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; two brothers; her husband, and a son, John VARNER (May 7, 1977).
She was also preceded in death by two grandsons, Michael Charles VARNER, John VARNER, and a great-grandson, Jeffrey
In her immediate family she is survived by her sons and their wives, Charles and Martha of Des Moines, Iowa;
Clay and Lela of Decorah, Iowa; Paul and Verladean of Clearfield, Iowa; Alvin and Galene of Burlington, Iowa; and a daughter-in-law,
Madge VARNER of Tooele, Utah. A sister, Pearl SPENCER of Wiota, Iowa also survives.
The VARNER family includes 11
grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
She was a longtime member of the Baptist
church of Mount Ayr.
The responsibilities of her family and her family home were her first concerns, and she looked
well to those needs and interests. She joined the social life of the communities in which she lived, adding new
friendships while retaining the old.
All her life she kept current contact with the members of the VARNER family,
sharing their concerns, joys, and sorrows with a delightful sense of humor, an accompaniment to her caring, and her
Services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21, by Rev. Paul KNIESS and Rev. Norman NOBLE at the Mount
Ayr First Baptist church. Organist was Mike GREENE and vocalist, Mrs. Jim JONES. Casketbearers Clifford FORCE,
Lloyd ANGUS, Gene LARSON, Richard PRENTIS, Marion EURITT and Dale SCHLAPIA. Burial was in Mount Ayr Rose Hill
