OBITUARY ~ ELMER DAVID VANDERPLUYM
August 25, 1918 ~ April 22, 2014

Elmer D. Vanderpluym, age 95 of Creston, died April 22, 2014 at Creston Nursing & Rehab Center in Creston. Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday April 26, 2014 at the Tingley Cemetery in Tingley, Ia. Mary O'Riley will officiate. Graveside military rites will be provided by the Theodore J. Martens Creston VFW Post #1797. Open visitation with family receiving friends will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday April 26, 2014 at the Powers Funeral Home in Creston near the junction of highways 25 and 34. Memorials are to the Creston V.F.W. Theodore J. Martens Post #1797 or the Creston Nursing and Rehab Center. Online condolences can be made under the obituary category at www.powersfh.com.

Elmer Vanderpluym was born August 25, 1918 in Shannon City, Iowa to Hazel Dell (Dewey) Vanderpluym and Albert H. Vanderpluym. Elmer attended Hackberry Country School near Tingley and graduated from Tingley High School in 1936. Elmer served his country during World War II in the United States Army as part of the infantry.

On July 15, 1943, Elmer married Darlene Turnbull in Arlington, Va. After they were discharged from the service they returned to a farm south of Creston where Elmer worked various jobs. In 1949, they moved into Creston and lived in his previous address that he built, from 1951 until 2011. Elmer worked for many years as part of the Soil Conservation Service as a Civil Engineering Technician retiring in 1984. Elmer was a member of Theodore J. Martens V.F.W. Post 1797 he also was active in the Afton Care Center Auxiliary.

Elmer is survived by two sons, David (wife Bonnie) Vanderpluym of Sidney, Ia. and Jon (wife Jeanne) Vanderpluym of Waukee, Ia.; a sister, Irene Hubbard of Creston; six grandchildren, Amy (husband Derek) Mach of Woodstock, Ill., Josh (wife Laura) Vanderpluym of Blue Eye, Mo., Lisa, Eric, Aaron and Adam Vanderpluym, all of Waukee, Ia.; four great-grandchildren, Christopher & Charlie Mach, and Carly and Taylor Vanderpluym and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Hilton of Calumet City, Ill. and one brother-in-law Max Herrington of Atlantic, IA. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Darlene, his brothers, Wayne, Raymond and Dean Vanderpluym, a sister Alice Coon, a grandson Todd Vanderpluym, three brother-in-laws, Wayne, Robert and Darrell Turnbull and a sister-in-law Helen Herrington.

Powers Funeral Home of Creston, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
