OBITUARY ~ JOYCE JANE (STEPHENS) UPCHURCH

Joyce Jane STEPHENS UPCHURCH, youngest daughter of Lawrence Ray and Lottie Odella BLACK STEPHENS, was born June 20, 1933, in Mount Ayr, Iowa, and passed away December 19, 1978, at her home, 15025 Rosecroft Road, Rockville, Maryland, of natural causes.

Joyce lived in the Mount Ayr area until 1947 when she moved to Des Moines, Iowa, with her family. Joyce was a graduate of North High School and of Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, in 1956, as was her husband, Paul. On December 28, 1956, she was united in marriage to Paul Harvey UPCHURCH at the First Baptist Church in Des Moines, Iowa.

Joyce was a Chi Omega, a member of the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church in Chevy Chase, Maryland, the Woman's Club, and the Manor Country Club in Rockville. She had been a Sunday school teacher for several years, very active in any event that concerned her family and their interests. She was also active in volunteer work in her church, sorority and civic affairs.

Joyce was preceded in death by her mother, Lottie, on January 13, 1978; a sister, Delores Jean, July 30, 1932; two brothers, John Vernon, December 31, 1953 and Gary Lee, April 4, 1946.

She is survived by her husband, Paul; two sons, Stephen Arlo, age 13, and John Thomas, age 10. She is also survived by her father, L. Ray STEPHENS, 4100-11th Place, Des Moines, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Richard LENCE (Majel), of Jonesboro, Illinois, and Mrs. William BURKE (Marguerite) of Clear Lake, Iowa; two brothers, A. Donald STEPHENS of Tucson, Arizon, and Larry Thomas STEPHENS of Des Moines, Iowa. Joyce also leaves aunts, uncles, cousins, and manyfriends across the country.

Funeral services were held December 24, 1978, at 1 p.m. at Hamilton's Funeral Home in Des Moines, Iowa, conducted by Dr. SamueL HOCHSTATTER of the First Baptist Church in Des Moines. A short graveside services was conducted by Reverend Norman NOBLE of the First Baptist Church, Delphos, Iowa.

Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Iowa.
