GERALD RAYMOND YOUNG DIES - Creston
Gerald YOUNG, 70, of Creston, passed away Saturday evening, September 23, 1989, at Greater Community Hospital in Creston.
He was born Feb. 4, 1919, in Ringgold County, the son of Timon and Grace (KNIGHT) YOUNG. On Feb. 26, 1938, he married
Luella SMITH in Mount Ayr.
He lived in Mount Ayr all of his life until moving to Creston two years ago.
Mr. YOUNG is survived by his wife, Luella of Creston; a daughter, Linda and husband, Jack WEESE of Creston; two sons,
Robert YOUNG of Creston and Gerry YOUNG of Dumont, Colo.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three
brothers George YOUNG of Salem, Ore., Russell YOUNG of Landers, Calif., and Wayland YOUNG of Philomath, Ore.; and a sister,
Dorothy SEEVERS of Tualatin, Ore.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the First Baptist Church in Mount Ayr with the Revs.
Carmen LAMPE, Ralph JOHNSON and Dan EDDINGTON officiating. Burial was at the Rose Hill Cemetery [Mount Ayr] with the
Wilson-Watson Funeral Home of Mount Ayr
in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials may be directed to the First Baptist Church in Mount Ayr.

OBITUARY ~ GERALD RAYMOND YOUNG
Gerald was born February 4, 1919, in rural Ringgold County, Iowa, and passed away Saturday, September 23, 1989, at
Greater Community Hospital in Creston, Iowa.
He lived on a farm east of Mount Ayr, Iowa with his parents, Timon
Ocon YOUNG and Grace Belle (KNIGHT). He attended school in rural Ringgold County. He accepted the Lord ad his
Personal Savior and was baptized November 22, 1936 at the First Baptist Church in Mount Ayr.
In April, 1944, he
enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the South Pacific Theater of War. Decorations of service were three
ribbons and a bronze star. He was honorably discharged in February, 1946. He was a member of the VFW and
American Legion in Mount Ayr.
On February 25, 1938, he married Luella Frances SMITH at the First Baptist
Church in Mount Ayr. In February, 1988 the shared their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends in Creston.
Most of Gerald's life was spent living and working in Ringgold County. He made many friends through his work at
Smith Oil and Mount Ayr Community Schools. Retirement meant continuing to be involved, driving a school bus in
Mount Ayr for many years.
Ringgold County was home to Gerald; he cherished his home town of Mount Ayr and the
friends he and his wife found there. He moved to Creston in June, 1987, to be closer to his children. He brought
with him a love for his grandchildren and treasured the time spent with each one. He had many interests but was well
remembered for his joy of early mornings and God's Creation.
He is survived by his wife, Luella of Creston; children:
Gerry L. YOUNG (Nancy) of Dumont, Colorado, Linda WEESE (Jack) of Creston, and Bob YOUNG (Sheryl) of Creston; nine
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters: George YOUNG (Wilma), Salem, Oregon, Russell YOUNG
(Lynn), Landers, California Wayland YOUNG (Helen), Philomath, Oregon, and Dorothy SEEVERS (John), Tualatin, Oregon;
a sister-in-law, Pauline YOUNG, Philomath, Oregon, and his mother-in-law, Irma SMITH of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Cecil YOUNG, and sisters, Vivian STEPHENS and Iona SLOAN.
He will live in the hearts of the friends he made
and be known always for the foundation he laid,
Because Goodness and Fairness never die -
they go shining on like the sun in the sky,
Just as Honor and
Truth endure forever,
Death is powerless to destroy or to sever . . .
So his gallant soul has taken flight
into a land where there is no night,
He is not dead, he has only gone on
to a brighter more wonderful dawn.
Funeral services were held September 27, 1089, from the First Baptist Church in Mount Ayr, Iowa, conducted by Rev. Carmen
LAMPE, Rev. Ralph JOHNSON and Rev. Dan EDDINGTON. Music was provided by Mrs. Keith SACKETT and Mrs. Francis WILLIS.
Casketbearers were James HAVER, Lloyd SLOAN, Raymond WALTER, Lee SLOAN, Phillip SLOAN and Richard PRENTIS. Burial was
in Rose Hill Cemetery at Mount Ayr, Iowa.
Military gravesite rites were conducted by Ringgold Post #172 American
