OBITUARY - MARVIN WOOLLUMS

American Flag.jpg Marvin WOOLLUMS, 71, of Mount Ayr died June 19, 2004, at Ringgold County Hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, at the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr. The Rev. John BRILLO will officiate the service. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Open visitation will be after 9 a.m. Tuesday with family receiving friends 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Wilson-Watson and Armstrong Funeral Home, 205 W. Monroe St. Memorials may be directed to Iowa Hawkeye Horseshoe Pitching Association.

Mr. WOOLLUMS, son of Zelma (ROBERTS) and Clair WOOLLUMS, was born May 3, 1933, in Mount Ayr. He graduated from Mount Ayr High School in 1951. On November 1, 1953, he married Freida P. MOLER in Mount Ayr. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1957. He worked for Iowa Southern Utilities in Mount Ayr 39 years. He was current state champion horseshoe pitcher and three-time past champion. He was inducted into the Iowa Hawkeye Horseshoe Pitching Association Hall of Fame in October 2003.

Survivors include his mother Zelma WOOLLUMS of Mount Ayr; two sons, David WOLLUMS of Mount Ayr and Brian WOOLLUMS of West Des Moines; a daughter, Marla (husband David) HANDY of St. Mary; a brother, Arvid WOOLLUMS of Diagonal; a sister, Cheryl HAINLINE of Van West; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and companion Vesta SHAHA of Mount Ayr.

He was preceded in death by his father, wife on June 5, 1992 and brother-in-law Terry HAINLINE.

OBITUARY ~ MARVIN CLAIR WOOLLUMS

Marvin Clair WOOLLUMS was born May 3, 1933 at Kellerton, Iowa to Clair WOOLLUMS and Zelma (ROBERTS) WOOLLUMS, and passed away June 19, 2004 at the age of 71.

Marvin went to Mount Ayr schools and graduated in 1951. On November 1, 1953, he was united in marriage to Freida Pauline MOLER in Mount Ayr. To this union two sons were born, David Alan and Brian Scott. They adopted a daughter, Marla Kay. They also fostered several children including Viola KIMBALL and Deanna GROVES.

Marvin served his country inthe United States Navy from December 8, 1955 to Augut 30, 1957.

Marvin and Freida lived all of their lives in Mount Ayr except for the two years that they lived in Hawaii while Marvin was in th Navy.

Marvin worked for a short time for the railroad before going into the Navy. When he returned home he started working for Iowa Southern Utilities and retired from there 39 years later.

Marvin's hobbies included fishing and pitching horseshoes. Marvin was a four time and current state horsehoe pitching champion. He was inducted into teh Iowa Hawkeye Horsehoe Pitching Association Hall of Fame in October of 2003. Marvin won many trophies and awards for his pitching. On June 19, 2004, Marvin passed away doing what he loved best, pitching in a tournament.

He was preceded in death by his father; wife Freida on June 5, 1992; and his brother-in-law, Terry HAINLINE.

Marvin is survived by his mother Zelma WOOLLUMS of Mount Ayr; two sons, David of Mount Ayr and Brian and special friend Emily of West Des Moines; daughter Marla HANDY and husband David of Saint Marys, Iowa; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brother Arvid of Diagonal, Iowa; sister Cheryl HAINLINE of Van Wert [portion of obituary missing]

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr with Reverend John BRILLO officiating. Musicians were Ginny EIGHMY, Angela CLUTTER and Dr. Collus LAWHEAD. Casket bearers were Bob HALEY, Jim CLARK, Raymond HENSELY, Leroy BLESSMAN, Jim MAHAN and Kenneth ANDREWS. Honorary pallbearers were Wilbur LANDPHAIR, Bob TOLAND, Eddie GREEN, Dee GREEN, Kenneth LAMBERT and all horseshoe pitching buddies.

Military rites were give by Ringgold Post #172 American Legion.

Marvin was laid to rest in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr.
