OBITUARY - HOWARD WHITTINGTON

American Flag.jpg Howard WHITTINGTON, 80, of Diagonal died Sept. 11, 2000 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Sept. 14 at the United Church of Diagonal with the Rev. Pam FARREN officiating. Burial will be in the Diagonal cemetery with military rites conducted by American Legion Morris-Herrold Post No. 395. There is open visitation with the family receiving friends 7 to 8 p.m. today at Wilson-Watson and Armstrong Funeral Home in Diagonal. Memorials may be directed to American Legion Morris-Harrold Post No. 395.

Mr. WHITTINGTON was born July 2, 1920 at Kent to Francis M. and Cornelia (BICKFORD) WHITTINGTON. He graduated from Shannon City High School in 1939. On December 10, 1950, he married Crystal W. MORRISON in Mount Ayr. He was a farmer and lived most of his life near Diagonal. He was a member of American Legion Morris-Herrold Post No. 395 and a former board member of the Ringgold County Farm Bureau. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his wife Crystal WHITTINGTON of Diagonal; a daughter Cathy (husband Dennis) LARSON of Farnhamville; two sons, David (wife Kathie) WHITTINGTON of Augusta, Ga., and John (his wife Cheryl) WHITTINGTON of Diagonal; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Juanita SALSBURY, brother Robert WHITTINGTON and two grandchildren.

 

OBITUARY - HOWARD EDWIN WHITTINGTON

Howard Edwin WHITTINGTON was born on July 2, 1920 near Kent, Iowa and left this life as we know it on September 11, 2000 at the age of 80 years, two months and nine days. His parents were Francis Marion and Cornelia (BICKFORD) WHITTINGTON.

Howard graduated from Shannon City high school in 1939. After graduation he worked in Colorado on his cousin's ranch. He traveled to California to work at Douglas Aircraft before enlisting in the Navy in February 1942.

He bought the farm where he presently lived, sight unseen, in 1943.

Howard married Crystal (MORRISON) PATE on December 10, 1950.

Howard's children include: Cathy LARSON, husband Dennis, of Farnhamville, Iowa; David WHITTINGTON, wife Kathie, of Augusta, Georgia; and John WHITTINGTON, wife Cheryl, of Diagonal. His grandchildren are: Sandy STOW, husband Robert, of Aiken, South Carolina; Michelle WHITTINGTON of Augusta, Georgia; John Paul WHITTINGTON, wife Amy, of Diagonal; Clint WHITTINGTON of Diagonal; and Chris NIPPERT, husband Donald of Villisca, Iowa. Great-grandchildren include: Alex and Taylor STOW and Katlin WHITTINGTON.

Preceding Howard in death were his parents, a sister, a brother and two grandchildren.

Howard loved his family, farm life, livestock and his many friends. His pastime was spent playing cards and traveling.

Funeral services were held at the United Church of Diagonal on Thursday, September 14, 2000 with Rev. Pam FARREN officiating. Casket bearers were John Paul WHITTINGTON, Jim WERNER, Clint WHITTINGTON, Claire NEWTON, David WHITTINGTON and Bryan COOK.

Howard was laid to rest in the Diagonal Cemetery with military graveside rites performed by the Morris-Herrold Post #395 American Legion.
