Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa

OBITUARY - JOHN K. WHITE

John K. WHITE, eldest son of Thomas W. and Rebecca TEDROW WHITE, was born April 5, 1871, on a farm five miles southeast of Mount Ayr, and departed this life on September 25, 1969, in the Ringgold County Hospital at the age of 98 years, five months and 20 days.

His earliest life was spent on a farm in Poe Township, and he received his education from the rural school.

On Dec. 25, 1895, he was united in marriage with Ida Belle MICKAEL and of this union were born six children -- three daughters and three sons.

After their marriage, they established their home on a farm near Tingley, Iowa, and continued farming there until 1907, when he purchased the Ringgold Store and the family moved there. For two years they operated the store, but later moved back to a farm in Poe Township. He later purchased the Calidonia Store where the family resided for a number of years. In 1917, he sold the Caledonia Store and moved to Mount Ayr, where he operated a grocery store for a number of years. He finally moved to Kellerton and operated a grocery store there until he retired.

He was a member of the Oakland Baptist church south of Mount Ayr, and faithfully attended there until he moved to Kellerton, where he attended the Assembly of God church until his health failed.

In 1942, he was united in marriage with Melissa McCUTCHAN of Grand River, and they continued to make their home in Kellerton.

He was very fond of music and loved to play his violin in the church choir. He found delight in making violins and giving them to his children and grandchildren.

Those who preceded him in death were his wife, Ida; his wife, Melissa; his parents; a son, Samuel; sons-in-law, Charley MICKAEL and Vern MATHIS; his brothers, James, Silas, Samuel, Alonzo, Jake and Albert; his sisters, Laura WOOD and Lillian WHEELER; and three infant daughters.

Left to mourn his passing and cherish his memory are his three daughters, Pearl MICKAEL of Kellerton, Floy MATHIS of Mount Ayr, and Bertha BOWEN of Eagleville, Mo.; two sons, John and Weldon of Kellerton; a son-in-law, Otha BOWEN; two daughters-in-law, Wilma WHITE and Alice WHITE;a sister, Maud VOLLAND of Milford, Neb.; two step-children, Boyce McCUTCHAN and Pearl WARDEN; a nephew, James WOOD of Mount Ayr; 16 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; 55 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of neighbors and friends.

His passing will grieve all who knew him and leave a vacancy unfilled.

Funeral services were held September 28 from the Rhoades Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Norman NOBLE. Arlen HUGHES and Jack HUGHES sang, accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Weldon MEADOWS. Casketbearers were Kenneth MICKAEL, Darrell BOWEN, Clarence PARKHURST, Audra BOWEN, W. H. SWANK and Joe BOYER. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Mount Ayr.
