OBITUARY - EARL K. WHEELEN
He was Uncle Earl to all of us. And if every anyone one was the very epitomy of the word, Uncle, it was he. It was he who
kept the records, saved all the memoriabilia, recorded all the special day. It was he who photographed the little
ones, brought them the commemorative keepsakes, and saved every souvenir ticket stub from trips to Holiday on Ice.
It was he who planned and ececuted trips that took us to every state in the Union. It was he who kept the antiques
and could tell a special story about every one. It was he who saved every thank you, Valentine and Christmas greeting and
today, it is our only hope that somehow he knew that he was appreciated. We didn'ttake the time to say so, like we
should. We didn't take the time to show him, like we could have.
Earl K. WHEELEN was born to Chester A. and Grace
HARSH WHEELEN on August 26, 1910, and passed away at his home, December 21, 1987. His early childhood was spent at a
farm close to Platteville, Iowa. He attended grade school at West Gay country school and was initiated into
adulthood at an early age due to the hardships of farming and family at that time. In 1938, he left his home in
Taylor County and with his brother, Emeral, went into partnership farming near Maloy, Iowa. They farmed what is
known as the SHAY farm. The home at that time consisted of Earl, Emeral, sister Maxine, their mother, Grace, and
Emeral's baby daughter, Jane.
They later purchased the DRYDEN farm and Earl lived in that home with his mother
until she passed away in 1973. Earl, at that time, was serving on the Ringgold County Board of Supervisors,
having been elected to that position January 1, 1965. He completed his service December 31, 1980.
