OBITUARY - EARL K. WHEELEN

He was Uncle Earl to all of us. And if every anyone one was the very epitomy of the word, Uncle, it was he. It was he who kept the records, saved all the memoriabilia, recorded all the special day. It was he who photographed the little ones, brought them the commemorative keepsakes, and saved every souvenir ticket stub from trips to Holiday on Ice. It was he who planned and ececuted trips that took us to every state in the Union. It was he who kept the antiques and could tell a special story about every one. It was he who saved every thank you, Valentine and Christmas greeting and today, it is our only hope that somehow he knew that he was appreciated. We didn'ttake the time to say so, like we should. We didn't take the time to show him, like we could have.

Earl K. WHEELEN was born to Chester A. and Grace HARSH WHEELEN on August 26, 1910, and passed away at his home, December 21, 1987. His early childhood was spent at a farm close to Platteville, Iowa. He attended grade school at West Gay country school and was initiated into adulthood at an early age due to the hardships of farming and family at that time. In 1938, he left his home in Taylor County and with his brother, Emeral, went into partnership farming near Maloy, Iowa. They farmed what is known as the SHAY farm. The home at that time consisted of Earl, Emeral, sister Maxine, their mother, Grace, and Emeral's baby daughter, Jane.

They later purchased the DRYDEN farm and Earl lived in that home with his mother until she passed away in 1973. Earl, at that time, was serving on the Ringgold County Board of Supervisors, having been elected to that position January 1, 1965. He completed his service December 31, 1980.

Earl, a talented and precise carpenter, moved a house to Mount Ayr during that period and renovated it to his liking and decorated it with impeccable taste. He enjoyed entertaining and his basement "pool room" was the meeting place of several of his good friends and almost every afternoon. Earl enjoyed his friends at coffee a couple of times a day and kept close touch with his family.

Earl was affiliated with Bethany Lodge No. 320 in Blockton, Iowa.

Earl was preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother Emeral.

Left with memories are sister, Maxine; brother-in-law, LaVerne WORTHINGTON; sister-in-law, Pauline WHEELEN; nieces and nephews, Jane I. BRADY of Mount Ayr; Steven and Peggy WORTHINGTON; Linda and Enrique VALDEZ, West New York, New Jersey; and Loretta WORTHINGTON of Mount Ayr; a host of great-nieces and nephews whose growth and accomplishments thrilled him.

Funeral services were held December 24, 1987, from the Wilson-Watson Funeral Home at Mount Ayr, Iowa, conducted by Rev. Sam FRY. Music was provided by Mike GREENE, Mrs. Jim JONES and Mrs. Robert FISHER.

Casketbearers were Bud AYRES, Carey BRABY, Casey BRABY, Craig BRABY, Curtis BRABY and Steve WORTHINGTON. Honorary pallbearers were Cleo LYNCH, Otis CARSON, Elvin SWANK, Danny GREGG, Arlen HUGHES, Allen HUGHES, Astor NELSON, Robert T. SHAY, RIchard BARNES, Darrell DAVENPORT, Eugene MOTSINGER and Raymond MINNICK.
