OBITUARY - CLIFTON VERNE WAUGH

Clifton Verne WAUGH, son of Charles and Matilda WAUGH, was born May 16, 1901 on a farm southeast of Redding, Iowa. He departed this life Sunday afternoon, Aug. 2, 1980, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He died at the age of 79 years, two months and 17 days.

He grew up in the same vicinity and there he attended rual school and Redding Consolidated high school.

He married Alta MILLER in 1927 at Leon, Iowa. The couple made their home in Middle Fork township in Ringgold county. They were the parents of two children - Alice Deane GARDNER of Shannon City, Iowa, and Harold Vernon, who died in infancy. The WAUGHS observed their 50th wedding anniversary in 1977 with an open house on their country home lawn.

Clifton devoted his entire life to farming and retired in 1976. At the time of his death he was living on the original Harvey WAUGH farm (his grandfather's) which was a century-old farm in 1976.

He was proud of his farm home - its flowers, garden, trees and yard and the animals to which he devoted much time. He liked the out of doors.

He was an active member of the Middle Fork United Methodist Church where he served on the administrative board for many years and where he was a lay speaker.

He was a civic-minded person who had served for many years on the election board and on the rural school board. He liked people and spent much time in visiting and traveling to fairs and other community celebrations and observances.

He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, Alta; one daughter, Alice and her husband Glenn GARDNER of Shannon City, Iowa; four grandchildren -- Nancy KUNZE and her husband John of Nauvoo, ill., Alan GARDNER and his wife Connie of Afton, Iowa, David GARDNER and Sharon GARDNER of Shannon City; three great-grandchildren - Melissa KUNZE, Julie and Matthew GARDNER, all of whom he loved dearly; and five sisters - Ferne JACKSON of Mount Ayr, Odean KRAFT of Winnetka, Ill., Flora Belle WAUGH of Mount Ayr, and Hazel JACKSON of Grant City, Mo.; many nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Harold; and a grandson, Steven GARDNER.

AWAY
I cannot say and I will not say
That he is dead - he's just away!
With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand
He has wandered into an unknown land.
And left us dreaming how very fair
It needs must be since he lingers there.
And you - O you, who the wildest yearn
For the old-time step and the glad return,
Think of him faring on, as dear
In the Love of There as the love of Here.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, 1980, at Rhoades-Wilson Funeral Home in Mount Ayr. Officiating minister was Pastor Milt HENDERSON. Organist was Mrs. Willis SHINKLE and vocalist, Mrs. Gordon BRADLEY.

Casketbearers were Charles JACKSON, Wendell JACKSOn, Dennis HUNT, Danny HUNT, John HUNT and Calvin ADAMS. Burial was in the Middle Fork Cemetery.
