OBITUARY - VERL LEROY WATTS

Verl Leroy WATTS was born Decmeber 10, 1911 near Knowlton, Iowa. He passed away December 6, 1987, at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr, Iowa.

He attended Cornith country school and then started helping on the family farm plus working out on other farms.

On August 6, 1930, he married Velma CRUM at the Diagonal Methodist parsonage. They farmed in the Diagonal and Massena areas before moving to Missouri in 1935. While in Missouri, Verl worked for the M.F.A. and they also did dairy farming. In 1952 they moved back to the Diagonal area where they farmed until 1973 when they retired and moved into Diagonal. During his retirement years, Verl enjoyed working part-time at the sale barn and taking care of the Lions building for a number of years.

Verl served different times on the A.S.C. Jefferson township committed, on the county extension committee, and enjoyed going to the Friendly Neighbors Club.

Survivors include his wife, Velma; sons, Dale and his wife, Lenna, of Cabool, Missouri, and Dean and his wife, Nancy, of Fairfax, Virginia; daughter Reba and her husband, John Rychnovsky, of Diagonal; grandchildren, Debbie and her husband Rick MYERS, Ron WATTS and his wife Janet, Greg and Brent WATTS, Pat SPAINHOWER and Steve and Mary RYCHNOVSKY and four great-grandchildren.

Verl is also survived by his mother, Grace, of the Clearview Nursing Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa; two sisters, Wilma and her husband, Anthony BLANCHARD, of Osceola, and Dorothy TEPLY of Mount Ayr; and one brother, Paul and his wife, Roena, of Diagonal; and many more relatives and friends.

Verl was preceded in death by his father, Roy; one infant grandson; and a brother-in-law, Adolph TEPLY.

Funeral services were held December 9, 1987, from the Untied Church of Diagonal at Diagonal, Iowa, conducted by Rev. Eydie STEPHENS. Music was provided by organist, Mrs. Claire NEWTON.

Casketbearers were John COOK, Alan OSHEL, Scott YOUNG, Claire NEWTON, Bernard SOBOTKA and Lawrence RYCHNOVSKY.

Burial was in Marshalltown Cemetery at Benton, Iowa.
