OBITUARY ~ MILDRED ANN TURNBULL, LEAVENWORTH
Mildred Anne TURNBULL, a 23-year resident of Leavenworth, died Tuesday morning, May 10, 2005,
in the Cashmere Convalescent Center at the age of 99.
She was born Mildred Anne WILEY, oldest
child of Lester and Alma SOBOTKA WILEY, on November 12, 1905, near Diagonal, Iowa. She grew up on the WILEY farm,
attended Bethel School through eighth grade, and graduated in 1923, from Diagonal High School. She was the sole
survivor of the 13 members of that class.
For two years she taught in a one room country school before attending
Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa. She later taught school in Arispe, Iowa and in Diagonal High School. She married
Harold Watson TURNBULL March 10, 1928, a marriage that lasted 62 years until his death at age 84, on July 14, 1990.
With her husband she was active in Diagonal churches, mainly teaching Sunday School classes. Mildred and her husband
published the weekly Diagonal Reporter for many decades, until ill health caused his retirement and sale of the
newspaper in 1972.
For years Mildred gathered the news of local residents and wrote of their coming and going, their
joys and sorrows – the life of the small community that numbered some 600 residents at the
most. She was an avid bird-watcher, and was most widely
known for her column, "Bird Notes," which was eagerly read by
Reporter subscribers and republished on occasion in other Iowa
newspapers and magazines. She also enjoyed writing poetry.
With her husband she moved to Leavenworth in 1982, to be
near her son and his family. There she joined the Leavenworth
Community United Methodist Church and taught adult Sunday
School class. She also volunteered at Osborn Elementary
School, helping young children learning to read. For several
years she contributed a column on birds and nature to The
Leavenworth Echo. Mildred had a special gift of writing personal
letters to friends near and far. Many have cherished these warm
greetings and thought-filled expressions of joy or sympathy which she sent to cheer those she felt needed to receive
a kind word.
Mildred TURNBULL is survived by her daughter-in-law, Jane
TURNBULL WRAY of Leavenworth; her grandson, Matthew, his wife
Christie and their children, Margaret, Victoria, Sophia, Elizabeth,
Alexandra and Macadam all of Leavenworth; and by her
granddaughter, Jennifer McDONALD of Cave Junction, Oregon;
also nieces, nephews and cousins; and by many dear friends
whose lives in Diagonal were deeply touched by this dear Lady.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; her son,
Miles on June 11, 1994; a great-grandson, Miles Montgomery
TURNBULL on January 11, 1993; her parents; brothers, Donald
WILEY and Ellis WILEY; and her sister, Florence WILEY JESSUP.
