OBITUARY - HOWARD E. TODD

Howard E. TODD of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Monday, February 12, 2001, at Higley Mansion in Cedar Rapids following a long illness.

Howard was born September 23, 1908 in Mount Ayr, Iowa, the beloved son of Guy and Maud (DUGAN) TODD. He graduated from Mount Ayr high school in 1926. He married Minna Gretchen FRIEDRICHS on August 1, 1934.

His occupation throughout his life was in retail and wholesale hardware. In 1968 he moved to Cedar Rapids to become housewares buyer for Harper-McIntire, a post he held until his retirement in 1975.

Known as a gentleman's gentleman and a mason's mason, Howard exemplified in his life the best qualities of Freemasonry. Howard was a brother to all, respected teacher of the craft, eloquent speaker and received its highest honors. He was a member of Faith Lodge #179 in Mount Ayr, 50-year member and Past Master of Mount Hermon Lodge #263, was a member of the Cedar Rapids Consistory, York Rite and Scottish Rite, the El Kahir Shrine, the 101 Unit and the Past Masters Unit of El Kahir.

A 33rd Degree Mason, Howard was Grand Chaplain, Grand Lodge of Iowa in 1981 and 1982. He served as Chaplain of El Kahir Shrine from 1985 to 1995 and was recipient of the Red Cross of Constantine and the Royal Order of Scotland.

He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and he served in the U.S. Navy during WW II.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Gretchen in 1990; a daughter Cynthia Louise TODD; and two sisters.

Surviving are a daughter Suzanne TODD KENDIG and her husband Thomas of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; two grandchildren, Christopher KENDIG of Boston, Massachusetts and Catherine KENDIG of London, England.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, February 15, 2001 at Turner Chapel West in Cedar Rapids. The Reverend Lloyd BROCKMEYER of St. Paul's United Methodist Church will officiate, and Tom EGGLESTON, 33rd Degree, Past Grand Master Grand Lodge of Iowa will conduct Masonic Rites. All Master Masons are asked to be present.

Interment will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 16, at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, conducted by Faith Lodge #179. Memorials may be made in Howard's name to the El Kahir Transportation Fund, El Kahir Shrine, 1400 Blairs Ferry Road NE, Cedar Rapids.

John B. Turner and Son Funeral Homes, Cedar Rapids, was in charge of the arrangements.
