S. N. THOMPSON DEAD

On last Monday, Mr. Stephen N[ewell]. THOMPSON, who resided about six miles northeast of town, was at work in his stable, which was of the too common western pattern, built by setting posts in the ground for a frame, and rocked with prairie hay. The posts had become quite rotten, and the roof was saturated with water, from the rains of the week preceeding. About noon there came a gust of wind, which overthrew the weak structure, buring him in the debris. The family knew nothing of any trouble, although the stable stood in plain view of the house, until one of them went to call him to dinner. When the mass was removed, he was found in a kneeling posture, entirely lifeless; his neck having been broken by the great weight. Deceased was about sixty-years-old, a member of the U. P. [United Presbyterian] Church, and kind neighbor. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn his unexpected death. They have the sympathies of the entire community in their breavement.

NOTE: Stephen Newell THOMPSON was born in Pennsylvania on June 25, 1812, and died at the age of 59 years, September 14, 1871, on his farm near Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa. He was married in Adams County, Ohio, on April 7, 1842, to Catherine Thomas BALDRIDGE.

Catherine Thomas (BALDRIDGE) THOMPSON was born in Cherry Fork, Adams County, Ohio, on September 17, 1821, the daughter of Samuel & Mary (McGARY) BALDRIDGE. She died at the age of 84 years, on August 28, 1906, Mount Ayr, Iowa.

Stephen and Catherine were interred at Oliver Cemetery, Ringgold County, Iowa.

Transciption and note by Sharon R. Becker, February of 2010
