Ringgold Record
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
April 12, 1906

OBITUARY ~ MRS. BELLE SWAN.

A telegram was received by C. G. STRANAHAN on Monday evening bearing the news of the death of his sister, Mrs. Belle SWAN. She died at her home in Manchester, Kan., the same afternoon [April 9, 1906]. Mrs. SWAN was for many years a resident of Ringgold county and had lived in recent years in Lotts Creek township near Ringgold. Her husband, Nahum SWAN, died in 1881, and was buried in Rose Hill cemetery and his wife will be laid by his side. Mrs. SWAN was sixty-two years old and was born [March 20, 1843] in Indiana. She was the mother of five children, two of whom died in infancy [Lydia (1862-1867) and Frank (1865-1865)]. The surviving children are Mrs. A. T. [Mary] HAGANS, Manchester, Kan., G. E. [George Edward "Eddy"] SWAN of Colorado Springs, and F. B. [Frank Baldwin] SWAN of Manchester. She went to Manchester four years ago in order to be with her son Frank.

Early in life Mrs. SWAN had associated herself with the Methodist Episcopal church and had always adorned this relation. In the time of the death of her husband and the period of her widowhood she showed great christian fortitude and the highest womanly virtues in caring for her home and children.

Mrs. SWAN is the oldest daughter of Mr. John STRANAHAN of this city [Mount Ayr] and the affliction comes as a severe blow to this aged servant of God. Her mother [Charity (GILLAM) STRANAHAN] died in her early years [1846] in Indiana and in 1956 she came with her father's family to Iowa.

The funeral services will be held today at 10 o'clock at the Methodist church and will be conducted by Rev. A. B. WHITMER. Mrs. SWAN had the love and respect of all who knew her.
