OBITUARY ~ SPENCER STEPHENS

Spencer STEPHENS of Afton, Iowa, was born Sept. 30, 1911, at Benton, Iowa and died April 13, 1982 at the Afton Care Center. His parents were Lloyd Ernest and Lola M. SPENCER STEPHENS.

His entire life was spent in southwest Iowa and he had been in the Afton area since 1948. He was a retired farmer. He was a member of th United Methodist church.

On July 2, 1931, he married Lois W. HON in a ceremony performed at St. Joseph, Mo. His wife survives him. The couple's seven children also survive. They include five daughters - Mrs. Evelyn (Kenneth) FLUCKY and Mrs. Larraine (Richad) HARTMAN of Creston; Mrs. Irene (Morris) CONKLIN of Afton; Mrs. Carol (Elmer) JOHNSON of Omaha, Neb.; and Mrs. Jane (Dean) SCOTT of Schaller, Iowa. The two sons are Ivan STEPHENS and wife, Roxie of York, Neb. and Allen STEPHENS and wife, Patricia of LeGrand, Iowa.

Also surviving are one sister - Mrs. Clarice (Lawrence) MINNICK of Kellerton, Iowa, and five brothers - Sherrill STEPHENS and Lloyd STEPHENS, Jr., both of Mount Ayr; Joseph STEPHENS of Dunkerton, Iowa; John STEPHENS of Shannon City, Iwa and William STEPHENS of Winterset, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a twin brother, a sister and a grandson.

Rev. John LING, pastor of the Afton United Methodist church, conducted a funeral service held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 16, 1982 at Stroud-Lindsay Funeral Home, Afton, Iowa.

Casketbearers included Dave HILL, Glen LESTER, Walter VOGEL, Russell HARDISTY, Richard SKARDA and Wray FIFE. Music for the service was by Mrs. Lucille WILSON, organist, who played "How Great Thou Art" and "One Day at a Time. [rest of obituary clipped off]
