OBITUARY ~ SAMUEL "SHERRILL" STEPHENS

Samuel Sherrill STEPHENS was born March 9, 1913 in Ringgold County, Iowa to Lloyd and Lola (SPENCER) STEPHENS. He passed away August 17, 1993 at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center in Mount Ayr, Iowa at the age of 80 years, five months and eight days.

He was united in marriage on June 24, 1939 to Erna NORDMAN CRAFT, also gaining two sons, Ross and Wendell CRAFT. Born to the union were two daughters, Muriel and Harla Jean.

Preceding him in death were his wife, his parents, two brothers, one sister and two grandsons. Remaining to cherish his memory are two sons, Ross and his wife, Sheryl of Creston and Wendell and his wife, Carol of Pella; two daughters, Muriel and her husband, Lloyd JOHNSON of Mount Ayr, Harla Jean and her husband, Don COUNTRYMAN of Creston; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-granchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Clarice MINNICK and husband Lawrence of Kellerton; four brothers, Joe and wife, Marcene of Dunkerton, Lloyd Jr. and wife, Mary of Mount Ayr, John and wife, Ruby of Shannon City, and Bill and wife, Gaylene of Winterset; two sisters-in-law, Mauree NORDMAN of Waterloo, Lois BENNETT of Purdy, Missouri; two brothers-in-law, E. E. MITCHELL of Palmdale, California, Lewis NORDMAN of Creston; and a host of relatives and friends.

Sherrill was a loving husband, caring father and grandfather, farmer, butcher and saw sharpener. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, one of whom he cared for in his home for two years. He farmed for 20 years before moving to Mount Ayr; did custom butchering with the helping hand of his youngest daughter, Harla Jean and later joined his oldest son, Ross, in the Community Meat Processing in Mount Ayr until he retired in 1975. After he retired, he and his wife, Erna, camped and fished until Erna's death in December of 1991. In January of 1992 his health started to fail, yet as late as one week before going to the care center he took a motorcycle ride with his oldest grandson, Roger, on his new 1993 Harley. On July 1, 1993, he moved into the Mount Ayr Health Care Center in Mount Ayr.

Funeral services were held August 21, 1993 at teh Wilson-Watson Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa, conducted by Rev. Phil KINTON. Music was provided by Edna JONES and Neva [rest of obituary missing - interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Iowa.]
