OBITUARY ~ LAWRENCE "RAY" STEPHENS

Lawrence Ray STEPHENS, son of John Lindsey and Catherine JARVIS STEPHENS, was born north of Benton, Iowa, in Ringgold County, on Nov. 12, 1888. Ray was one of 14 children. He departed this life on Nov. 19, 1983, in Des Moines, Iowa, at the Hill Haven Convalescen (sic) Center, at the age of 96 years and seven days.

Ray was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church of Delphos, Iowa. Much of his early life was spent in Ringgold County where he was a farmer, was in the Chevrolet garage business with his brother Marion; and also did road work for the county. For the past 36 years he has lived in Des Moines, where he was an engineer at the Hotel Fort Des Moines until his retirement. Ray was a veteran of World War I.

On Dec. 30, 1920, he married Lottie Odella BLACK, in Mount Ayr, Iowa. To this union, eight children were born. Lottie preceded him in death on Jan. 12, 1978, after 57 years of marriage.

He was also preceded in death by his four children: Gary Lee, John Vernon, Delores Jean and Joyce Jane UPCHURCH.

Ray is survived by two daughters, Mrs. William BURKE (Marguerite) of Clear Lake, Iowa; Mrs. Richard LENCE (Majel) of Washington, D.C. and Jonesboro, Illinois; two sons: Alonzo Donald STEPHENS and Larry Thomas STEPHENS of 4100 - 11th Place, Des Moines, Iowa; four grandchildren: John Thomas UPCHURCH and Stephen Arlo UPCHURCH of Wilmette, Illinois; John Randall BURKE, a student at the University of Arizona in Tucson, and one granddaugher, Abbie Dena BURKE WELLS, and her husband Jackson of Tuscon, Arizona.

He is also survived by one brother, Marion STEPHENS of Perry; three sisters, Ona (Mrs. Robert H. KASTER) and Gladys (Mrs. Everett SELLERS) of Des Moines, and Lela (Mrs. Gerald HARVEY) of Lincoln, Nebraska, and many nieces and nephews.

A service as (sic) held at the First Baptist Church in Mount Ayr, Iowa, Wednesday, Nov. 23, 1983. Officiating were Rev. Norman R. NOBLE and Rev. Paul CARTER. Music was by Douglas GREENE, Margaret BICKERS and Mary TRULLINGER.

Casketbearers were Keith BASTOW, Harold KASTER, Roger STEPHENS, Monte E. DAILEY, Barton SHIELDS and Duane TRIGGS. Military gravesite rites were conducted by Ringgold Post #172, American Legion. Burial was made at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Iowa.
