OBITUARY ~ JOHN R. STEPHENS, SHANNON CITY

John Ross STEPHENS, 72, 1770 250th Street, Shannon City, died of lung cancer Oct. 20, 1998, at his home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Oct., 24 at the Platte Center Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Peter BRANTNER will officiate with burial in the Harmony Cemetery, rural Shannon City. There is open visitation 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Powers Funeral Home, 601 New York Avenue. The family will receive friends 1 to 8 p.m. daily at the home. Memorials may be directed to the Platte Center Presbyterian Church, Union County Fair or Green Valley Hospice in lieu of flowers.

Mr. STEPHENS was born Feb. 4, 1926, in Delphos to Lloyd E. and Lola Maude (SPENCER) STEPHENS. He graduated from Afton High School in 1944. On Jan. 31, 1949, he married Ruby M. CRITTENDEN in Osceola. He farmed most of his life in Union County and also worked as a carpenter for many years, retiring in 1988. He moved to his home south of Creston in 1955. He was a member of the Platte Center Presbyterian Church, Pippin' Poppas, Patherette Pals, Union County Saddle Club and Union County Historical Society. He was a 4-H leader for 20 years, served on the Union County Fair Board, was an officer with the Union County Pork Producers and district director for the Iowa Pork Producers Council. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from September 1945 to 1946.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby M. STEPHENS of Shannon City; two sons, Dannie (wife Vickie) STEPHENS and Reggie (wife Carol) STEPHENS, all of Creston; four daughters, Kathie BRYANT and fiance Gene DWYER of Bettendorf, Dixie (husband Kim GRYTDAHL) STEPHENS of Las Vegas, Nev., Shellie (husband Steve) BILLINGS of Dallas Centery and Julie (husband Robert) DeYOUNG of Oak Plark, Ill.; mother-in-law, Iva CRITTENDEN of Creston; three brothers, Joe STEPHENS of Dunkerton, Lloyd (wife Mary) STEPHENS Jr. of mount Ayr and Bill (wife Gaylene) STEPHENS of Winterset; a sister, Clarice (husband Lawrence) MINNICK of Creston; a sister-in-law, Florence WILLETS of Creston; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Earl, Spencer and Sherrill STEPHENS; and a sister, Muriel.
